How to get Astarion approval
Recruit Astarion and bring him into conversations as you explore. Respond to his dialogue and make choices with his character in mind, including as his personal quest unfolds. Approval can help shape the relationship, but no single approval score is a universal guarantee that a romance scene will trigger.
Larian describes companion relationships as developing through deliberation, choice, and consequences, and says players can back out or change their minds. The route is therefore more than a score to maximize: your dialogue and later decisions matter. The BG3 Wiki’s approval guide says its approval values are drawn from official in-game dialogue files as of Patch 7.
Astarion romance Act 2 scene: choose a route
The BG3 Wiki documents two ways to reach Astarion’s important Act II scene. The setup and scene presentation differ, but either route can lead to the follow-up conversation that determines whether you become partnered.

These are the documented routes in the BG3 Wiki’s Astarion romance guide; they are not a guarantee that a scene will trigger at an identical moment in every game state.
Choose whether to become partnered
In the second romantic cutscene, tell Astarion that you care about him to advance the relationship to partnered status. Choosing the friend-oriented response can end the romance, but the guide says this response does not reduce approval. Pick the answer that matches the relationship you want rather than treating the conversation as an approval test.

Spoilers: Astarion’s Act III romance choices
Spoilers for Astarion’s personal quest and romance ending follow.
Astarion’s personal quest and the decision about ascension shape the later romance. On the ascended path, Astarion offers to turn the player character into his spawn. Accepting changes the character’s status; refusing means he does not continue the relationship in the ordinary route. Consider what outcome you want before making the ascension decision or answering the offer.

If Astarion’s romance scene does not trigger
- Check your route sequence. The documented Act II paths involve either defending the spawn from Araj at Moonrise, or killing Yurgir and then visiting Moonrise without speaking to Araj.
- Do not rely on approval alone. Approval is only one part of a relationship shaped by choices, dialogue, and quest progress.
- Account for game version and multiplayer. Larian’s Patch 7 notes include a fix for an Astarion romance flow at the camp celebration, and its final major patch notes include a fix affecting romantic-scene triggers in multiplayer. Older walkthroughs may not reflect those changes; if your sequence matches but the scene is missing, check the notes for your current build.
