Winning is optional if your goal is to recruit the cub: the race and recruitment are separate outcomes.
Get the Owlbear Cub to the Goblin Camp
The Chicken Chase uses the Owlbear Cub once it has reached the Goblin Camp; it is not simply the earlier chicken encounter. The BG3 Wiki’s Owlbear Cub reference says that if the cub is spared in the relevant earlier encounter, it moves to the Goblin Camp after a long rest. Krolla can then offer the game.
Guide the cub to the goalposts
- Start Chicken Chase with Krolla. The game is a wager at the Goblin Camp. Speak with Krolla to begin the chase.
- Use an Animal Handling option to direct the cub. The Owlbear Cub reference lists “Coax the cub toward the goalposts” (DC 15), “Guide his gaze to the goblins – they deserve to die” (DC 15), and, for a Ranger or Druid, “Nod to the goalposts – he’ll be safe there” (DC 10). These are the checks reported by the wiki; the dialogue available can depend on your character.
- Stay behind the cub while it runs. The Krolla reference says your character needs to be behind the chicken or cub to guide its direction. For the race, use the chase’s guiding interaction rather than interacting directly with the cub, which can bypass the game.
Speak with Animals is another route mentioned in the encounter reference, but the available evidence does not establish a complete, universal dialogue sequence or guaranteed-win method for it. Use the Animal Handling options shown to your character if you want the documented route.
Collect the wager from Krolla
Winning the run may not settle the wager automatically. The Owlbear Cub reference reports that Krolla can argue that only goblins can win Chicken Chase; you may need to persuade or intimidate her to receive the winnings.

If you want the Owlbear Cub as a camp visitor, focus on inviting it to camp and convincing Krolla to release it. The cub and Goblin Camp references treat recruitment separately from the wager: you do not have to play or win Chicken Chase to recruit the cub.
