Patch 8 did not make every Baldur’s Gate 3 mod safe or guarantee that character-creation mods would keep working. But it did add native Toolkit support for several character-creation interface features, which could reduce conflicts for mods built around them. If a modded creator looks wrong after an update, check the mod and its dependencies before assuming the game itself is broken.
What Patch 8 changed for character-creation mods
Larian’s Patch 8 announcement described Toolkit changes that brought several UI functions into the Toolkit natively. These included action resources, racial spells at level-up, race passives, scrolling through heads, passives, equipment, class, subclass and origin selection, feat passives, and radial customization and descriptions.
That is a meaningful improvement for mod authors building relevant interface changes: native support can reduce conflicts, particularly for mods that depend on ImpUI. It is not a blanket fix for existing mods, nor a promise that any particular mod will work with every game version or platform.
Why a modded character creator can still fail
Larian cautioned that “Some things might not work immediately after a new update and it might take a little while before a mod can be updated.” A mod can need an update of its own, or conflict with another mod or dependency. Larian Support lists symptoms that can include missing or overlapping character-creation options and avatars appearing naked.

During the Patch 8 stress test, Larian also warned that players using ImpUI might see missing radial descriptions or menu options that did not work as intended. That was a specific historical stress-test warning, not evidence that the issue remains in every Patch 8 installation.
There is no official figure establishing how many Patch 8 mods broke character creation, and no exhaustive official compatibility list for every mod, dependency, save or platform. Check the mod’s current listing and author notes rather than assuming compatibility from its category.

Supported mods and third-party mods are not the same
Larian’s in-game Mod Manager and browser provide a supported route for mods, but compatibility is still not automatic: updates, dependencies and conflicts can affect supported mods too. Third-party mods can also be used, but Larian’s support guidance treats them differently when troubleshooting, and they may require cleanup after a major update.
Platform availability differs as well. Larian says only mods made with the Toolkit, uploaded and internally tested are eligible for the console and Mac browser; not every PC mod can be offered there. A PC mod’s availability or behavior should not be assumed to carry over to Mac or console.

For context, Larian reported more than 1,000 mods uploaded and over 15 million downloads after Patch 7 in 2024. Those figures describe the mod ecosystem at that time, not Patch 8 character-creation compatibility or breakage.
How to troubleshoot a broken character creator
- Check for updates. Open the in-game Mod Manager, review your installed mods and update any that have an available release. Larian recommends keeping mods updated regularly: Mod Issues support guidance.
- Note your setup. Record your platform, game version, the affected mod, and its required dependencies. Include whether the mod comes from the in-game browser or a third-party source when reporting the problem.
- Disable mods and test. Turn off installed mods in the in-game Mod Manager, then check whether the same character-creation symptom remains. If it disappears, re-enable mods methodically to narrow down a likely conflict and contact the relevant mod author through the mod listing. If it persists with mods disabled, report a suspected game issue to Larian Support.
- Handle third-party files carefully after a major update. If launch or in-game problems continue, Larian Support advises removing existing third-party mod files. Its instructions discuss checking the install’s Mods and Public folders and, where applicable, the profile’s modsettings.lsx. Use the support guidance for your setup rather than deleting files from a live profile casually; old profiles and dependencies can matter.
- Check multiplayer mod matching. Larian says both players need the same mods for multiplayer. Its Patch 8 stress-test instructions for joining a modded PC host specified fewer than 100 mods and only mods accepted on console and Mac. Treat those as stress-test requirements, not a universal current limit for every multiplayer setup; consult the relevant Patch 8 stress-test instructions and current mod listings.
What the official Patch 8 fixes do—and do not—tell you
Larian’s May 20, 2025 Hotfix #32 announcement identifies game version 4.1.1.6848561 and records fixes for a black game world or menu background after returning from character creation, and for a greyed-out Enable button in the Mod Verification window when using a controller. Those are historical fixes; they are not evidence of unresolved current bugs or a compatibility guarantee for character-creation mods.
