Thief is the most straightforward all-round pick for repeatable bonus-action flexibility; Assassin is better suited to players who deliberately create surprise openings. Swashbuckler favors close-range melee dueling, while Arcane Trickster adds spell utility. The best Rogue depends on how you want to fight, not on a single established damage ranking.
Which Rogue subclass is best in BG3?
Choose by your preferred combat rhythm: Thief for flexible turns, Assassin for surprise-led openers, Swashbuckler for direct melee dueling, or Arcane Trickster for spells and utility. The current Rogue class list includes all four; Swashbuckler was added in Patch 8 in 2025.
| Subclass | Best fit | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Thief | Consistent action flexibility | Fast Hands grants a second bonus action. |
| Assassin | Planned ambushes and strong opening turns | Combat-start and surprise interactions reward setting up encounters. |
| Swashbuckler | Close-range melee dueling | Features support movement around attacked targets, initiative, and Sneak Attack in close-range situations. |
| Arcane Trickster | Spell utility alongside Rogue abilities | Gains Mage Hand, cantrips, and spell selections and slots through Rogue progression; spell effectiveness makes Intelligence relevant. |
These are playstyle distinctions, not a tested ranking across difficulty modes. The available class information does not establish a universal damage-per-round winner.
Thief: the flexible default
Fast Hands grants an additional bonus action, letting a Thief combine more bonus-action options in one turn—for example, an off-hand attack alongside movement or hiding. That repeatable flexibility makes Thief an accessible pick if you want useful turns without depending on surprise.

- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
At level 9, Supreme Sneak grants invisibility that recharges on a short rest, adding a tool for stealth and repositioning.
Assassin: build around the opening
Assassin’s Alacrity restores an action and bonus action at the start of combat. The subclass has advantage against creatures that have not yet taken a turn, and attacks against surprised creatures are critical hits. These mechanics favor a player who scouts and sets up surprise; they are more encounter-dependent than Thief’s extra bonus action.
Swashbuckler: stay in the melee
Added in Patch 8, Swashbuckler is designed for a more active, head-to-head Rogue. Its level-3 features improve movement around creatures it attacks, increase initiative, and make Sneak Attack easier to trigger in some close-range circumstances. Charisma also matters for some of its dirty-trick abilities.
Arcane Trickster: trade some focus for magic
Arcane Trickster gets Mage Hand, cantrips, and spellcasting choices as it advances as a Rogue. Pick it when spells and utility are part of the appeal; it is not simply a martial Rogue with a cosmetic magic feature. Intelligence matters for spell effectiveness, so plan ability scores accordingly.

Rogue basics: stats and class progression
Dexterity is the baseline priority because it supports physical attacks and Armour Class. Constitution helps survival. Other ability scores depend on the subclass and the character you want to play: Intelligence supports Arcane Trickster spell effectiveness, while Charisma is useful for dialogue and for some Swashbuckler abilities.
Rogue progression includes Expertise at levels 1 and 6, Cunning Action at level 2, Uncanny Dodge at level 5, Evasion at level 7, Reliable Talent at level 11, and Sneak Attack reaching 6d6 at level 11. The class receives feats at levels 4, 8, 10, and 12.

Starting ability scores
One beginner-guide Thief template starts with STR 8, DEX 17, CON 14, INT 10, WIS 12, CHA 14. It emphasizes Dexterity for the Rogue’s core combat role, Constitution for survival, and Charisma for dialogue. Treat these as one workable template, not proof that the array is optimal for every party or playthrough.
Example feat progression
| Rogue level | Example choice | Why it appears in this template |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | +2 Dexterity | Improves the build’s primary ability. |
| 8 | Alert | An example initiative-oriented choice. |
| 10 | Not specified in the beginner example | Choose for your preferred combat style; the example does not name a feat here. |
| 12 | Mobile | Fits a more mobile approach. |
This is a build-specific example, not a universal feat prescription. Pick around your subclass and how you use turns: a melee duelist, a spell-focused Arcane Trickster, and a ranged Thief do not have identical priorities.

Dual hand crossbows and bonus-action use
The beginner Thief example uses dual hand crossbows. Its turn concept is to spend the action on an attack that can deliver Sneak Attack, then use the two bonus actions for options such as an off-hand shot and Hide. The point of the example is how Fast Hands opens another bonus-action choice, not a guaranteed damage result.
The guide’s example equipment includes Ne’er Misser and Hellfire Hand Crossbow, plus Gloves of Thievery, Caustic Band, and Smuggler’s Ring. These are in-game items cited as part of that build example; they are not requirements for playing a Rogue.
How to choose for your run
- Pick Thief if you want a reliable extra bonus action to spend on attacks, movement, or other options.
- Pick Assassin if planning surprise and maximizing the opening of combat are central to your approach.
- Pick Swashbuckler if you want to close distance and duel enemies in melee.
- Pick Arcane Trickster if you want spells and utility built into the Rogue class, and are willing to account for Intelligence.
For a first Rogue with no strong preference, Thief is the simplest recommendation because its extra bonus action is useful across more ordinary turns. Choose another subclass when its specific playstyle is the reason you want to play Rogue.
