How romance works in Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian describes relationships as evolving interactions with individual characters. Rather than treating intimacy as a prize for following a companion’s quest line, the game encourages players to navigate the relationship, disagree, and challenge a partner’s thinking. Larian’s explanation of romance and companionship puts the emphasis on the character and the relationship, not on checking off a uniform set of tasks.

Companions also respond to the choices you make during the journey. Larian’s official game page says each companion has a moral compass and reacts to your decisions. As a result, there is no single universal sequence of actions that guarantees the same relationship outcome for every character.

Are romance and sexual content required?
No. You can reject a character’s advances, and you can play without displaying nudity or explicit content. The game’s official page says these content settings can be disabled separately or together. The choice to pursue a relationship is also distinct from the choice to see explicit content: the setting controls presentation, while dialogue and decisions shape your relationships.

What romance and sex options are confirmed here?
This guide does not provide a complete character-by-character route list. The available official sources explain the relationship design and content controls, but do not establish every romanceable character, eligibility condition, dialogue step, consequence for pursuing multiple relationships, or sexual scene. A guide that claims to enumerate all current routes would need verified, character-specific details for those points.

- Whether the path is romantic, sexual, or both, and what content settings affect its presentation.

Patch 6: character-specific kisses
Patch 6, released February 16, 2024, added randomized, character-specific partner kisses and improved some endgame cinematics. The update changed how some existing relationship moments are presented; it is not a complete catalogue of romance routes or sexual encounters.
What changed after Patch 8?
Larian called Patch 8 the game’s final major patch. In its April 15, 2025 announcement, the studio said it would not add new narrative content or make significant storyline, Origin character, or companion changes afterward, while leaving room for minor bug fixes. That announcement is useful context for the game’s development status, but it does not supply the missing route-by-route romance inventory.

Romance is part of the role-playing choice
Larian’s 2020 romance and companionship update frames the player’s character as central to the experience: “At the end of the day this remains a D&D game and the most important character in a game of D&D is you.” You can pursue a relationship, refuse one, or limit what explicit content appears without treating any of those choices as a required path through the game. Larian’s later account of its relationship design likewise says sex was not intended as a trophy for complying with a companion’s quest line.
