The Temple of Bhaal is in the northeastern Undercity Ruins beneath Baldur’s Gate. Reach it from the Lower City Sewers, clear the Bhaalist ambush at Manslaughter Chasm, and use the Amulet of Bhaal at the final temple doors—unless you are playing the Dark Urge, who has a special way through. The early stone door in the ruins is a separate puzzle. This walkthrough contains major Act Three spoilers, including the fate of Orin’s captive.
Where is the Temple of Bhaal?
The route begins in the Lower City Sewers and continues into the Undercity Ruins, below Baldur’s Gate. The in-game note Map to Bhaal Temple gives the broad directions: “Use a round street hatch to enter the City Sewers. Proceed northwest to find your way into the Undercity Ruins. Blood the skull to pass the door. Follow the trail of murder to the Bhaal Temple Door. Praise Bhaal!” The phrase “blood the skull” refers to the entry puzzle, not the final temple entrance.
Follow the trail of murder through the ruins to Manslaughter Chasm. After the encounter there, proceed to the Temple of Bhaal waypoint. From the waypoint, take the stairs and bridge toward the temple’s final doors. The route and waypoint locations are documented in the BG3 Wiki’s Temple of Bhaal guide.
How do you open the first door in the Undercity Ruins?
The magical stone door near the entry area is distinct from the final Temple of Bhaal doors. You can open this early door by using a ranged attack on either of the two hanging corpses, showing the Amulet of Bhaal, or casting Knock. The route involving the amulet also appears in the quest path for becoming an Unholy Assassin.

How do you get the Amulet of Bhaal?
Most characters need the Amulet of Bhaal to open the final temple doors. The usual route is to complete Impress the Murder Tribunal and receive it from Sarevok after the Unholy Assassin ritual. If you fight the Tribunal instead, you can loot the amulet from Sarevok. The Dark Urge has an exception: Sceleritas Fel can open the temple door without it. The amulet is an in-game story item, not a real-world product.
Reaching the Murder Tribunal
The Tribunal route is optional if you have already reached the temple area by another path, but it is the usual way to obtain the amulet. The quest That Which Guards requires proof in the form of a severed hand. At the relevant dialogue, choose “I killed to be here – and took the victim’s hand as proof.” Accepted proof can include a victim’s hand, Dolor’s Hand Bag, or Gortash’s Hand; the quest also lists Gale’s Severed Hand as a Dark Urge-specific option.

Sarevok questions the party about a murder. If the character speaking did not kill the victim, the Tribunal quest lists Deception checks at DC 20; the Dark Urge may face different checks depending on Slayer-form progression. The moral decision comes when Sarevok asks the party to kill investigator Valeria. Killing her enables the Unholy Assassin ritual and leads to the amulet. Attacking Sarevok instead turns the Tribunal encounter into a fight but does not grant the Unholy Assassin title. See the BG3 Wiki’s Murder Tribunal quest guide for the quest’s proof and dialogue details.
How do you get past the Manslaughter Chasm ambush?
Crossing the chasm triggers an ambush led by Farslayer Ghislev. The doors toward the temple remain shut until Ghislev is defeated, and additional Bhaalists may join as your party advances. Concentrate on clearing the encounter rather than trying to push through to the temple doors while enemies remain.

How do you cross the trapped bridge?
The bridge beyond the Temple of Bhaal waypoint contains Marble Plates and Sanguine Vents that release Unstable Blood. Nearby candles can ignite the blood. The BG3 Wiki lists DC 15 Perception checks for spotting the trap components; those are in-game checks and can vary with the character’s capabilities.

How do you save Orin’s captive?
At the altar, Orin and her retinue confront the party, and her abducted victim may be chained there. The initial conversation and combat can change with the Dark Urge origin, whether the party promised to kill Gortash, what the party has learned about Orin’s lineage, and whether the victim was freed unnoticed.
You can prevent Orin from killing the captive in several documented ways:

- Pass a DC 25 Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion check during the initial dialogue.
- Use evidence about Orin’s lineage and pass the associated check.
- Stealthily unlock the bindings before the confrontation.
- Start combat by attacking Orin or one of her retainers.
If you fail the check or let Orin proceed, she kills the hostage immediately. If the captive is a companion, the temple guide warns that a companion killed during this event cannot later be revived. Choose dialogue and combat options with that consequence in mind.
How do you stop Orin’s Unstoppable charges from refreshing?
In the non-duel version of the fight, Reapers of Bhaal chant to activate the Boon of Bhaal, which replenishes Orin’s Unstoppable charges at the end of each turn. Stop the chanters or interrupt their chanting rather than spending every attack trying to break through charges that will return.
- Apply conditions that disrupt the chant, such as Prone, Silence, Hypnotised, Fear, or Stun.
- Use area attacks to hit or kill multiple chanters.
The temple guide lists seven Unstoppable charges on Explorer and Balanced, and twelve on Tactician and above for this non-duel encounter. These are game mechanics and may be version-sensitive. A Dark Urge duel is a different encounter variant; Orin’s Slayer form and cultist mechanics can also change with origin and dialogue state. The encounter details are covered in the BG3 Wiki’s Orin the Red guide.
Can you reach Orin’s room without going to the altar first?
Yes. A hidden passage on the temple’s upper level leads north to Orin’s private room without first crossing the altar area. It can let you inspect the room before confronting her. The main altar remains where Orin’s retinue and the captive may be found.
