Yes—Kevin VanOrd, the Larian senior writer who wrote Wyll, said he wished the character had received more content and a more fulfilling arc. His January 9, 2026, remarks explain why Wyll’s story ended up thinner than he intended, but they do not provide a numerical comparison proving that Wyll received less development than every other companion.
What did Wyll’s writer say?
In a verified Larian Studios AMA on Reddit, VanOrd responded to a player who felt Wyll’s story lacked agency and asked why it had not been developed further in post-launch patches. “I wish Wyll had gotten more content and a more fulfilling arc too,” he said. Read VanOrd’s AMA response.
VanOrd also said, “Wyll’s content is sparser than I’d have liked as a result.” That is a direct admission of his own dissatisfaction with the character’s final content—not a quantified finding that Wyll had the fewest scenes or quests.
Why did Wyll’s story fall short of VanOrd’s plans?
The team restarted his early story
VanOrd said Larian was not connecting with Wyll’s Early Access recruitment and initial questing, so the team started over. By then, he said, most of the other companion stories were already fairly solid. A planned role for Wyll in a situation near Baldur’s Gate—the Red War College—was cut, sending the team back to the drawing board.

Illness and limited time narrowed the follow-up
After the story was reworked around Duke Ravengard, VanOrd said he became unexpectedly ill and was away for a substantial period, including after the epilogue’s release. Larian CEO Swen Vincke proposed Ansur’s lair; the available resources allowed the team to create a standalone dungeon. VanOrd said he could not get more than a dungeon boss out of that setup before he had to write situations already in place. PC Gamer’s January 9, 2026, report also recounts his explanation.
What did VanOrd think was missing from Wyll’s arc?
His plot was divided between Mizora and Ravengard
VanOrd described Wyll as “split into two stories, really—the Mizora story and the Ravengard story,” and said the division “might have been a mistake in hindsight.” His regret points to a structural issue: the personal stakes were distributed across two threads rather than building toward one more unified companion arc.

He wanted a more consequential ending
VanOrd wished he could have given Wyll “a stronger endpoint.” He said it bothered him that Wyll could finish the game as he began—as the Blade of Frontiers—without a meaningful difference. That is VanOrd’s assessment of the possible ending, not a claim that every player’s Wyll reaches the same outcome.
He also emphasized his affection for the character, praising Wyll’s sincerity, good nature, and eager heroism. “I’m truly sorry I didn’t give you more quality time with him,” he told players in the AMA.

Does this prove Wyll was treated worse than other companions?
It supports the narrower claim that Wyll’s writer believed the character deserved more content and a more fulfilling arc. VanOrd said other companion stories were already fairly solid when Wyll’s was restarted, but he did not publish a full comparison of companion scenes, quests, dialogue, development time, or post-launch changes. No sourced figure establishes Wyll’s share of content or ranks him against the rest of the party.
Larian’s earlier Community Update #7 on romance and companionship described an intended system responsive to player choices, actions, and conversations, with companions pursuing their own goals and opinions. Lead writer Sarah Baylus said, “At the end of the day this remains a D&D game and the most important character in a game of D&D is you.” That post describes design intent before the full game’s release; it does not measure whether Wyll’s finished arc met that goal.

VanOrd has expressed related regret elsewhere, but in a separate context: GamesRadar reported on his Edge interview in which he said, “I wish I could have done more with Wyll,” and described his wish for friendship events, dates, and romances between companions. Those remarks are not part of the AMA and do not establish that such features were promised for a particular release. GamesRadar’s report on the Edge interview.
