Ball x Pit evolutions fuse two ball types at the Evolution Chamber, but the available recipe references do not establish a reliable, complete current list of every ball and passive evolution. Here are the named effects confirmed in official update materials, how to use them to compare builds, and where the roster stands as of October 8, 2026.
How ball evolutions work—and why a complete recipe chart needs a version check
An unofficial BallxPit.org guide describes an evolution (also called a fusion) as the result of combining two ball types at the Evolution Chamber. Its database reports 42 evolutions, but that count is not confirmed as the current total. A later Dexerto guide, dated August 6, 2026, says its recipes include content from the Naturalist Update; the two references do not establish a single verified, current roster count.
Use the game’s in-game encyclopedia to check a recipe before planning a run. A recipe list can become outdated as updates add balls, and a count on a third-party page should not be treated as proof that every current evolution is listed. The available official update descriptions name some balls and effects, but do not publish a complete ball recipe chart.
Named ball effects in official update descriptions
The official materials describe examples rather than a complete inventory. The Shadow Update preview by Kenny Sun, Game Designer at Kenny Sun & Friends, says it adds 11 balls and describes the following named effects:

| Ball | Described effect | Build consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Venom | Builds toward paralysis. | Offers a crowd-control direction; the preview does not specify a recipe or quantify its effect. |
| Time | Drops an area snare that freezes enemies. | Combines area coverage with control rather than relying only on direct damage. |
| Erosion | Removes a percentage of an enemy’s current health on hits. | Its described damage is percentage-based, so it is distinct from a fixed-damage description. |
| Time Bomb | Explodes after a delay. | The delayed detonation makes timing and enemy positioning relevant. |
| Timestop | Briefly freezes everything on the field. | Provides broad, temporary control across the field. |
| Warp | Blinks to a random location after hits. | Its positioning is unpredictable by design. |
| Sniper | Pierces enemies and has boosted critical chance. | Supports piercing and critical-hit potential. |
| Heart Swallower | Can drain health, heal one, and weaken an enemy’s attack. | Combines a possible healing benefit with an enemy debuff. |
The preview deliberately leaves some of its 11 new balls unnamed, so these eight descriptions are examples, not the full Shadow Update roster. It does not give ball-fusion recipes or controlled performance comparisons.
What the Naturalist Update adds
Devolver Digital’s official Steam store page identifies The Naturalist Update as the game’s final free update and says it adds 11 balls and five passives. It names Lightning Bug, Drill, and Armageddon as ball examples, and Platinum Dumbbell, Inglorious Hammer, and Remote Detonator as passive examples. The page does not provide the complete passive combination table or describe the effects of all these examples in the material available here.

“Final free update” does not mean “final game content.” PC Gamer reported on September 20, 2026, that the paid Risen Ballbylon expansion was announced for November 12, 2026. The reported plans are 20 ball evolutions, eight hunters, four biomes, 20 buildings, and 46 passives. Those are announced future additions, not part of the released roster as of October 8, 2026.
How to compare ball and passive choices
The official update descriptions support comparing effects by role, but do not establish that one combination is stronger than another. Consider what a build needs from its balls and passive slots:

- Damage and scaling: Erosion is described as removing a percentage of current health. The Shadow Update preview also describes Full Metal Rapier as scaling ball damage with the number of baby balls and enemies on the field, Argent Stopwatch as starting at 150% damage and losing 30% per bounce, and Sword Breaker as lowering base damage to 75% while adding 1% for each enemy in play. Those conditional effects make the number of enemies, baby balls, or bounces relevant to the stated bonus.
- Coverage and target handling: Time creates an area snare, while Sniper pierces enemies. These descriptions point to different ways of affecting enemies; the sources do not provide a direct comparison of their damage or effectiveness.
- Crowd control: Venom builds toward paralysis, Time freezes enemies in an area, and Timestop briefly freezes everything on the field. The descriptions differ in scope and effect; no duration or exact paralysis threshold is stated.
- Positioning and timing: Time Bomb detonates after a delay, while Warp moves to a random location after hits. These effects make timing or position less predictable than a direct-hit description.
- Survivability and defense: Heart Swallower can heal one while weakening an enemy’s attack. The Arrow of Fate passive grants immunity to incoming projectiles and retaliates with baby balls, according to the Shadow Update preview.
Character slots change which builds fit
The Naturalist Update store description gives two contrasting loadouts. Slot counts are part of the character choice, not evidence that a particular build performs better.
| Character | Loadout rule | Practical emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| The Ballbearer | Twice the ball slots, but no passive items. | Build around a broader ball selection; passive-based effects are unavailable to this character. |
| The Hoary Hoarder | Two ball slots and twice the passive slots. | Build around a larger passive selection, with fewer ball slots. |
These trade-offs make slot compatibility an important part of choosing an evolution strategy. The official description does not state the absolute slot totals, so “twice” should not be converted into a guessed number.

What is and is not confirmed about passive evolutions
Official update descriptions establish that Naturalist adds five passives and give examples, while the Shadow Update preview names four passives and describes their effects. They do not establish every passive evolution recipe. The complete current passive recipe list therefore cannot be reproduced reliably from these materials; do not infer combinations from an item’s name or effect.
The four passives named in the Shadow Update preview are:

- Full Metal Rapier: Ball damage scales based on the number of baby balls and enemies on the field.
- Arrow of Fate: Grants immunity to incoming projectiles and retaliates with baby balls.
- Argent Stopwatch: Begins at 150% damage and loses 30% per bounce.
- Sword Breaker: Lowers base damage to 75% and adds 1% for each enemy in play.
These descriptions are examples from the preview, not a complete passive inventory or recipe guide.
Version and platform notes
The counts and named examples above are attributed to the relevant publishers, not independent performance tests. The official Steam store page is the source for Naturalist’s update scope and its “final free update” description; the Shadow Update effects come from Kenny Sun & Friends’ official preview. The upcoming expansion figures come from PC Gamer’s September 20, 2026 report.
Nintendo’s official US store page lists BALL x PIT – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as a digital edition with enhanced resolution and improved frame rates. That platform listing does not verify that every version has identical update timing or recipe data. Check the in-game encyclopedia in the edition you are playing when confirming a recipe.
