Banjo-Kazooie has a native PC port, but it is not a new official release from Rare or Xbox. Banjo: Recompiled is a fan project that runs the original Nintendo 64 game on Windows, Linux, and macOS, with modern display and frame-rate options. To use it, you must supply a specific original game file: the North American 1.0 N64 version.
What is Banjo: Recompiled?
Banjo: Recompiled is a fan-made native PC port of the original Banjo-Kazooie, built with the N64: Recompiled project. Static recompilation translates the original game code to run natively rather than making this a general-purpose emulator. The project says it does not use source code from the Banjo-Kazooie decompilation as its base, though reverse-engineering work from that effort helped with some enhancements.
It is not a new Banjo-Kazooie game, an official Rare PC release, or an Xbox PC version. PC Gamer reported its release in January 2026 for Windows, Linux, and macOS, with source distributed through GitHub. For current builds and technical notes, consult the project repository.
What features does the PC port add?
The project lists high-frame-rate support, widescreen and ultrawide display options, configurable graphics, sound, and input settings, and mod support. It says the original audio and visual effects are preserved and gameplay is not affected by changing the frame rate. Players can also choose the original game’s frame rate; the project warns that external frame-rate limiters may cause problems.

What does it require?
The port does not include the game’s copyrighted assets. You must provide a North American 1.0 copy of the Nintendo 64 game in the format the project accepts. Other ROM versions are not supported. The project is not an emulator, and the required file is not bundled with its download. The available information does not establish a lawful way for every reader to create or obtain that file, so check applicable law and the project’s requirements rather than assuming ownership of a cartridge supplies a usable PC file.

For graphics, the repository specifies a GPU supporting Direct3D 12.0 with Shader Model 6, Vulkan 1.2, or Metal Argument Buffers Tier 2. It also gives examples of older GPU families and says x86-64 PCs require SSE4.1. Because compatibility and builds can change, check the repository’s current requirements and release notes before installing.

Xbox announced a separate early-release backward-compatibility programme for PC in July 2026. Its four listed launch games were BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies, and Fuzion Frenzy—not Banjo-Kazooie. That programme should not be confused with Banjo: Recompiled. What about Lighthouse?
Time Extension reported in June 2026 that Harbour Masters was working on Lighthouse, another native PC project based on the Banjo-Kazooie decompilation effort. That report described planned widescreen and frame-rate features, a randomizer, online co-op, and a requirement to provide an original game copy. It does not establish Lighthouse’s current release status, so treat it as a reported project rather than an available alternative. See Time Extension’s June 2026 report.
