The barcode.dll error usually means that ABBYY FineReader or an application using FineReader Engine cannot load its barcode recognition module. barcode.dll is not a Windows system file, so copying it into System32 is rarely the correct repair.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the shortest safe path:
- FineReader stopped starting after an update, cleanup, migration, or failed reinstall: repair or reinstall the same ABBYY product first.
- The file is present, but Windows says “The specified module could not be found”: check the ABBYY installation architecture and Microsoft Visual C++ dependencies.
- Windows Security recently detected or removed the file: review Protection history before restoring anything.
- A document-management or custom OCR application shows the error: repair the application that installed FineReader Engine, not necessarily FineReader PDF.
- The error started after a major Windows problem: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, but do not expect SFC to restore ABBYY’s private DLL.
- You downloaded
barcode.dllfrom a DLL website: remove that replacement and restore the application from its legitimate installer. - Only barcode recognition fails while FineReader opens normally: the recognition module, its companion files, or its runtime dependencies may be damaged.
- The entire ABBYY application fails to launch: treat the installation as incomplete or mismatched and use Repair, Change, or a clean reinstall.
What barcode.dll belongs to
barcode.dll is a Barcode Recognition DLL supplied with ABBYY FineReader technology. ABBYY’s FineReader Engine distribution identifies it as a system module used for document analysis and recognition.
It is part of an application installation, not a Windows component. A FineReader installation may also contain barcode models, other recognition modules, licensing files, companion ABBYY DLLs, and Microsoft C/C++ runtime files. That is why replacing one file independently often leaves the original problem unresolved.

The filename alone is not enough to identify every copy found on a computer. Other commercial software can use similar filenames. Check which application reports the error and inspect the installation directory before changing anything.
A historical file inventory may describe a 32-bit copy as version 2.0.0.20 and approximately 0.18 MB. That is not a universal version, size, or safe download target. ABBYY releases and FineReader Engine deployments can contain different builds.
What the error really means
Reported messages include:
- “This application failed to start because barcode.dll was not found.”
- “The file barcode.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: barcode.dll.”
- “The program can’t start because barcode.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading barcode.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load barcode.dll.”
The wording does not always identify the precise cause. “The specified module could not be found” can mean either that barcode.dll is missing or that Windows cannot load one of its dependencies.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows searches for DLLs according to its DLL search order. A copy placed in System32, SysWOW64, or another searched folder is not automatically the correct copy for FineReader. It may be the wrong architecture, the wrong release, or a security risk.
Fix 1: Repair the ABBYY installation
Repair is the safest first action because it restores the application’s files as a group.
Try Windows Installed apps
- Close FineReader and any application that uses OCR.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for ABBYY FineReader or the application that reports the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows after the repair finishes.
- Open the application and test both normal startup and the barcode-related task.
Not every traditional desktop program exposes Advanced options or Repair in this location.
Try Programs and Features
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find ABBYY FineReader or the owning application.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If the installer asks for the original installation media or package, use the same official installer source and product release originally used by the organization. Do not select a random DLL as a substitute.
How to tell whether repair worked
Repair succeeded if:
- FineReader starts without the
barcode.dllmessage. - The application can open a document.
- Barcode recognition works where it previously failed.
- The file is restored inside the application’s own ABBYY directory.
- No new missing-DLL message appears for a companion module.
If repair completes but the error remains, continue with the architecture and dependency checks below. If the product is listed but Repair fails, uninstalling and reinstalling the same product from its legitimate installer is usually more reliable than copying individual files.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact owning product
A clean reinstall is appropriate when the installation is partially removed, damaged, or mixed with files from another release.

First identify the owner:
- If FineReader itself displays the error, repair or reinstall FineReader.
- If a document-management system displays it, that system may own the embedded FineReader Engine installation.
- If a custom OCR program displays it, contact the software vendor or use the FineReader Engine Runtime or Developer package supplied for that application.
- If an old application was restored from a disk image, reinstall its compatible ABBYY engine rather than borrowing a DLL from another computer.
Reinstall procedure
- Back up any application settings, activation information, templates, or custom dictionaries required by your organization.
- Close FineReader and related applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the ABBYY product or application that installed the engine.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only leftover application folders that you have confirmed are part of that product. Do not delete unrelated ABBYY folders blindly.
- Run the original official installer as an administrator.
- Choose the correct installation type and architecture.
- Complete activation or licensing steps.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before applying optional customizations.
For FineReader Engine, use the matching Runtime or Developer distribution for that engine version. A runtime installation consists of multiple files, not just barcode.dll. A 64-bit Developer installation may use ABBYY’s installDev64.exe, but the correct package depends on the application and deployment model.
If the reinstall is performed by an application vendor’s setup program, use that setup program. Installing a separate desktop FineReader product may not repair an embedded engine owned by another application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 3: Check 32-bit versus 64-bit architecture
ABBYY’s FineReader Engine distribution separates 32-bit files into Bin and 64-bit files into Bin64.
A 32-bit application generally needs the 32-bit barcode.dll, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit application needs the 64-bit module and compatible companion files. Do not solve a 32-bit error by placing a 64-bit DLL in System32.
Identify the application architecture
- Start the affected application if it opens far enough.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the application’s installation path, but a folder name alone is not conclusive. A 32-bit program is commonly installed under C:Program Files (x86), while a 64-bit program is commonly under C:Program Files.
Check the ABBYY folders
Look inside the owning application’s installation directory for folders named Bin and Bin64. The required barcode.dll should belong to the same product installation and be accompanied by the other ABBYY recognition files.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not mix:
- A 32-bit
barcode.dllwith a 64-bit application. - A file from an older FineReader release with a newer engine.
- A file from another computer with a different license or product configuration.
- A standalone file with an installation that is missing barcode models or sibling DLLs.
If the correct file is absent, return to Repair or reinstall the complete product.
Fix 4: Repair the Visual C++ runtime dependency
FineReader Engine distributions can require Microsoft runtime files including concrt140.dll, msvcp140.dll, and vcruntime140.dll. If barcode.dll exists but still will not load, a missing or damaged Visual C++ dependency is plausible.
Install the required architecture
- Identify whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit application. - Download
vc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit application. - On 64-bit Windows, install both when the computer runs both 32-bit and 64-bit applications.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or complete the installation if it is missing.
- Restart Windows.
- Test FineReader again.
Do not assume that the newest runtime makes every older toolset interchangeable. Some applications require an older redistributable, so keep an existing runtime when another program depends on it. If the ABBYY installer supplies a prerequisite package, use the version specified by that installer.

What success looks like
The error is resolved when the application launches and performs recognition without producing a second missing-runtime message. If barcode.dll remains present but the same load error continues, repair the ABBYY installation again after repairing the runtime. The problem may involve several damaged files rather than one dependency.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application file. Quarantine does not prove that the file was a false positive, so do not repeatedly restore it without checking its origin.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries related to FineReader, the owning application, or
barcode.dll. - Confirm the file path and detection details.
- If the file came from the legitimate ABBYY installation, scan the system and verify the installation before considering Restore or Allow on device.
- If the path points to a temporary folder, an unknown download, or an unexpected program directory, do not restore it.
- Run a full scan.
- Repair or reinstall the application from its official installer.
If the file is quarantined again immediately after repair, pause further restores. Have the security administrator review the detection, digital signature, file path, and installer source. A repeated detection can indicate a damaged installer, an unwanted modification, or a genuine security issue.
Fix 6: Update the application or its supporting drivers
An update can repair a failed installation state, but use the update channel supplied by ABBYY or by the vendor that embeds FineReader Engine.
- Close the affected application.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application’s built-in update or maintenance function, if present.
- Otherwise, run the official installer for the same product line.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Update when offered.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Device drivers are not the usual cause of a missing barcode.dll, but a broken scanner or imaging driver can make recognition appear to fail after the DLL issue is fixed. To check one:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers, depending on the hardware.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test scanning.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through multiple driver versions; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the ABBYY application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned barcode.dll.
Do not use Device Manager to replace barcode.dll. It manages hardware drivers, not ABBYY application modules.
Fix 7: Run DISM and SFC for wider Windows corruption
barcode.dll is normally an ABBYY application file, not a Windows-protected component. SFC is therefore not the primary repair for this particular DLL.
Use these commands when Windows itself is behaving abnormally, the ABBYY installer will not run, or multiple unrelated programs report damaged system components.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be expected to recreate FineReader’s private barcode.dll.

Repeating these commands without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process easier by showing what its free scan identifies; repair actions are handled by the full version, and it is not required when the ABBYY installer is the actual source of the problem.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete, record the message and repair Windows separately before attempting another ABBYY reinstall.

System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can roll back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. If the error remains, use the official ABBYY Repair or reinstall path rather than repeatedly reverting Windows.
Why random DLL downloads and regsvr32 are wrong fixes
Do not download barcode.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, be the wrong architecture, belong to another ABBYY release, or omit the companion recognition modules and runtime files required by FineReader.
Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An unrelated application folder
- A shared network folder used by multiple releases
Those locations can cause version conflicts and DLL search-order problems. They can also make a malicious or mismatched file available to programs that search those directories.
regsvr32 barcode.dll is not a general DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs designed as COM or ActiveX servers with the required registration entry points. A normal ABBYY recognition module is loaded by its owning application. Restore it through the ABBYY installer instead.
ABBYY separately documents registration behavior for its engine library, FREngine.dll. That does not establish that Barcode.dll should be registered manually.
Advanced case: the file is present but still fails
If barcode.dll is visibly present, check these points:
- Confirm that it is inside the owning application’s ABBYY directory.
- Confirm that the application and file use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Check whether the error names a missing dependency.
- Repair the correct Visual C++ Redistributable architecture.
- Check whether antivirus software modified or quarantined a companion file.
- Repair the complete ABBYY installation.
- If the application embeds FineReader Engine, ask its vendor for the compatible Runtime or Developer package.
- Test with a clean Windows user profile if the failure appears limited to one account.
Do not replace only the visible DLL. A missing model, sibling module, licensing file, or runtime can produce the same loading failure.

Prevention after the repair
Once the application works:
- Keep the original ABBYY installer and matching license information in a controlled location.
- Record whether the deployment is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Do not run disk-cleanup software against application directories without reviewing its exclusions.
- Review antivirus exclusions through your organization’s security policy rather than allowing files casually.
- Apply ABBYY updates through the approved installer or update channel.
- Avoid copying application DLLs between workstations.
- Keep the required Visual C++ Redistributables installed.
- Document which program owns the FineReader Engine deployment.

FAQ
Is barcode.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an ABBYY FineReader recognition module. Windows does not normally restore it through SFC or Windows Update.
Which program installed barcode.dll?
It is associated with ABBYY FineReader technology, including FineReader Engine. A document-management or custom OCR application may install and own the engine, so check the program that displays the error.
Should I put barcode.dll in System32?
No. Restore it through the owning ABBYY application’s Repair or reinstall process. System32 is not a universal storage location for application DLLs.
Does a 64-bit Windows computer need the 64-bit DLL?
Not necessarily. A 32-bit FineReader application generally needs the 32-bit module from the matching Bin directory. A 64-bit application needs the compatible Bin64 module.
Will installing Visual C++ always fix the error?
No. It helps when a required Microsoft runtime is missing or damaged. If the ABBYY installation itself is incomplete, repair or reinstall FineReader instead.
Should I run regsvr32 barcode.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed for COM or ActiveX registration. An ABBYY recognition module should normally be loaded by FineReader.
What if Windows Security quarantined the file?
Review Protection history, verify the file’s path and source, scan the system, and repair the application. Do not repeatedly restore a file without confirming that it belongs to the legitimate ABBYY installation.
What is the safest fix?
Repair the exact ABBYY FineReader or FineReader Engine installation that reports the error. If Repair is unavailable or fails, reinstall the same product and compatible architecture from its official installer.
