The basesrv.dll errors you may see
The basesrv.dll error may appear as:
- “This application has failed to start because basesrv.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
- “STOP: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component}”
- “The application or DLL
C:WindowsSystem32basesrv.dllis not a valid Windows image.” - “basesrv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because basesrv.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading basesrv.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
The 60-second answer
basesrv.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component called Windows NT BASE API Server DLL. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, game file, or ordinary application plug-in.
Do not download basesrv.dll from a DLL website and copy it into System32. The safest repair is to update Windows, run DISM, run System File Checker, and restart. These tools restore protected Windows files from trusted repair sources.
If Windows cannot start, use Windows Recovery Environment and run an offline SFC scan. If repair tools fail, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
What is basesrv.dll?
basesrv.dll is supplied by Microsoft as part of the Windows operating system. Its description is Windows NT BASE API Server DLL. Windows loads it as a base-server component associated with the Client/Server Runtime Subsystem, or csrss.exe.

That means an application can report a failure involving basesrv.dll even though the application does not own the file. The program is usually affected because Windows cannot load one of its own required components.
Microsoft documentation shows csrss.exe loading basesrv as a ServerDll in its configuration. This is different from a normal application DLL that an installer places beside an executable.
Where should basesrv.dll be located?
On a standard Windows installation, the native system copy belongs under:
%SystemRoot%System32
This usually resolves to:
C:WindowsSystem32
The exact Windows directory can differ if Windows was installed on another drive or into a customized folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A 32-bit counterpart may be exposed through:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
System32 is the native system directory on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit system files. Do not assume that a file from one directory can safely replace the other. Windows version, architecture, language, and servicing level must all match.
Is basesrv.dll malware?
The filename itself is legitimate, but malware can use the same name. Check the file’s location and its digital signature rather than trusting the name alone.
A copy in the normal Windows system directory is more consistent with the genuine component. A copy in a temporary folder, a downloads folder, an application directory, or an unfamiliar user profile folder deserves investigation.

Why the application says to reinstall itself
Windows programs commonly use a generic loader message:
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

That text does not prove that the application owns basesrv.dll. In this case, the named file is a protected Windows component. Reinstalling a game or program generally cannot restore a missing Windows core DLL.

Read the complete error carefully. If the full message names another DLL belonging to the program, the application installation may actually be damaged. A program that mentions basesrv.dll in one part of an error and another missing dependency elsewhere needs to be diagnosed from the complete message and Event Viewer.
The error may also result from:
- A corrupted or missing Windows system file
- An incomplete Windows update or failed servicing operation
- A failed repair attempt
- Abrupt shutdown or storage corruption
- Antivirus quarantine or malware damage
- A manually copied file from another computer
- A mismatch between 32-bit and 64-bit files
- A dependent DLL with an invalid format
- A single old application that is incompatible with the current environment
The filename alone cannot identify the exact cause.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
Windows updates can contain repaired or updated system components, including protected files such as basesrv.dll.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately request it.
- Try launching the affected program again.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if Windows starts normally and the application no longer reports that basesrv.dll is missing or invalid.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If updates fail, remain pending after a restart, or produce another servicing error, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not try to solve a Windows component problem by downloading a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Run DISM, then System File Checker
This is the main repair sequence for a missing or corrupted basesrv.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source.
Run the commands in an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
The command switches mean that DISM repairs the currently running Windows installation, while SFC checks and replaces protected system files.
What the SFC result means
SFC may report one of several outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. The original error may involve another dependency, an application installation, malware, or a problem that has already been corrected.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again.
- SFC cannot run or DISM reports that the source files could not be found: Continue to the repair-source or in-place repair steps below.
If you are repeatedly hunting for a damaged component and cannot tell which repair changed the system, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems and show what it finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for Windows repair.
Use a matching DISM repair source when Windows Update cannot help
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use matching Windows installation media or another verified repair source.
The general command is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the repair source.
The source must match the installed Windows edition, release, language, and architecture. A mismatched source can fail to repair the component store or create another servicing problem. If you do not have a matching source, an in-place repair installation is usually safer than guessing.

Fix 3: Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall option
Some supported Windows 11 installations provide a repair option that reinstalls the current version while preserving applications, personal files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Restart when Windows finishes.
This option is useful when Windows itself is damaged but still starts normally. It is not the same as downloading an individual DLL.
If the option is unavailable, use DISM and SFC first, then consider System Restore or an in-place repair from official installation media.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a detection, but the presence of basesrv.dll in Protection History does not automatically prove that the detection was false.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open the detection that mentions the file.
- Check its path, detection name, and action.
Only restore a file when you have verified that it is a genuine Microsoft file and the detection is a confirmed false positive. If the file is in an unusual directory, or the detection indicates malware, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
After dealing with the detection, run DISM and SFC. If basesrv.dll repeatedly disappears after repair, investigate third-party antivirus software, malware, unauthorized system modifications, and storage problems instead of repeatedly downloading replacement copies.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began after an update, failed repair, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other recent system change.
From a normally booting desktop
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem started.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal documents, but review the affected programs shown before confirming.
From Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows cannot boot normally:
- Start the computer and allow Windows Recovery Environment to appear after failed starts, or boot from suitable Windows installation media.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose an account and restore point.
- Complete the restoration.
If no restore point exists, continue with offline SFC or an in-place repair.

Fix 6: Repair Windows when it will not boot
When the missing file prevents Windows from starting, run SFC against the offline Windows installation.
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Command Prompt.
- Identify the Windows drive letter. In WinRE, Windows may not be mounted as
C:. - Test likely drive letters with commands such as:
dir C:Windows
If that folder is not present, try another drive letter.

An in-place repair reinstalls Windows over the existing installation while attempting to preserve personal files, applications, and settings.
- Obtain official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture.
- Sign into Windows normally.
- Open the installation media.
- Run
setup.exe. - Follow the setup screens.
- When asked what to keep, select Keep personal files and apps.
- Confirm the selection before starting.
- Allow Windows to restart as required.
Do not boot from the media and choose a clean installation unless you have backed up your files and intentionally want to remove the existing installation. An in-place repair is the appropriate first choice when Windows still runs but its protected components remain damaged.
Do not copy a random basesrv.dll
Random DLL download sites are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or be modified. Even a clean file from another computer may not match the installed Windows release, language, servicing branch, or system architecture.
Manual copying also does not repair the component store or explain why the file disappeared. It can leave Windows in a partially repaired state.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- DISM using Windows’ component store
- Matching official Windows installation media
- SFC
- An in-place repair installation
Manual copying is only an advanced offline recovery exception using a verified file from the exact same Windows build and architecture. For ordinary repairs, use the supported recovery tools instead.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 basesrv.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. basesrv.dll is configured as a CSRSS ServerDll, not as a normal self-registering application DLL.
If regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing, that does not mean the file needs another registration command. It means the command is inappropriate for this component.
Check whether the problem is actually another DLL
If only one old program fails, do not assume basesrv.dll is the real cause.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Read the entire error dialog.
- Copy down every filename and status code.
- Check Event Viewer for an application error at the same time.
- Confirm whether the named file is exactly
basesrv.dll. - If another application DLL is named, repair or reinstall that application from its vendor’s installer.
- If the program is very old, check whether compatibility settings or a supported replacement is necessary.
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET repairs are relevant only when the complete error names a file from one of those components. They do not replace a missing Windows base-server DLL.

Drivers and Device Manager
A driver is not the normal repair for a basesrv.dll error. Do not replace drivers merely because the error appeared after a restart.
Check drivers when Device Manager or crash logs identify a broader hardware or driver failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
If you are manually checking many devices and cannot determine which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required when Windows repair tools identify the real problem.
Do not use Device Manager to replace basesrv.dll, and do not treat a driver update as a substitute for DISM and SFC.
When to check the disk
Abrupt shutdowns, disk corruption, or failing storage can damage Windows files. Warning signs include repeated file corruption, unexplained repair failures, disappearing files, unusual disk noise, frequent freezes, or errors affecting many unrelated programs.
Back up important data first. Then use Windows repair tools and inspect the drive’s health using the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utilities or an appropriate Windows-supported method. If corruption returns after successful SFC and DISM repairs, storage failure becomes more likely and should be investigated before reinstalling Windows repeatedly.
Frequently asked questions
Is basesrv.dll part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system component. The exact file version and size depend on the Windows release, architecture, and installed updates, so there is no universal version or size that applies to every computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I install Visual C++ to fix basesrv.dll?
No, not when the error specifically names basesrv.dll. Visual C++ may be relevant if the full error names a Visual C++ runtime file instead.
Can I copy basesrv.dll from another computer?
Avoid it. The other computer may use a different Windows build, architecture, language, or servicing level. Restore the component through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching media, or an in-place repair.
Why does the message mention C:WindowsSystem32 on a 64-bit computer?
That is normally the native 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows. Windows uses WOW64 redirection and SysWOW64 for 32-bit system components. Do not move files between the directories manually.
Does a c0000135 error prove that basesrv.dll is the cause?
No. Historical Microsoft reports associate 0xC0000135 with unable-to-locate-component failures, including older Windows incidents, but the status code alone does not prove which dependency is missing on a current system.
What does “not a valid Windows image” mean?
It usually indicates that Windows could not load the file as a valid image. Possible causes include corruption, a wrong-architecture replacement, an incomplete update, or another damaged dependency. Run DISM and SFC instead of downloading a replacement.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error remains?
Restart, run SFC again if necessary, and inspect the complete error for another missing dependency. If the problem affects only one application, repair that application. If Windows has broader corruption, use System Restore or an in-place repair.
Should I reinstall the application?
Only if the complete error identifies an application-owned DLL or the application installation is independently damaged. Reinstalling an application normally does not restore basesrv.dll, because that file belongs to Windows.
What is the safest final step?
If Windows still starts, use an in-place repair installation after trying Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and System Restore. If the disk is failing or malware has damaged the installation extensively, back up your data and consider a clean Windows installation after addressing the underlying problem.
