“ The program can’t start because bass_ac3.dll is missing from your computer.” The bass_ac3.dll error usually means an application has lost its BASS_AC3 audio plugin, not that Windows has lost a system file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:

- The error appeared after an update or antivirus alert: Check quarantine, then repair the application.
- The application starts but reports “Error loading input plugins: bass_ac3.dll”: Check the plugin folder and 32-bit or 64-bit compatibility.
- Only AC-3 files fail to play: Restore the application’s AC-3 plugin rather than reinstalling Windows codecs.
- The file exists but Windows says “The specified module could not be found”: A dependency, architecture mismatch, or security block may be preventing it from loading.
- The file is in an unknown folder or came from a cracked program: Do not restore it blindly. Scan the entire application and remove the untrusted software.
What bass_ac3.dll is
bass_ac3.dll is the BASS_AC3 add-on for the BASS audio library. It allows a compatible application to play AC-3 encoded audio files and streams.

It is a third-party application plugin. It is not a Windows component, Microsoft system DLL, hardware driver, or file that should normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Applications can load it only when they need AC-3 support. That is why a media player may launch normally but fail when opening an .ac3 file, or why it may show a plugin warning while continuing to play other formats.
The official BASS catalog lists BASS_AC3 version 2.4.0.9 as a Win32 add-on. That matters: the plugin must match the application’s architecture. A 32-bit DLL cannot be loaded by a 64-bit process.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that owns the file
This is the safest and most likely solution. The application may need a particular combination of the BASS core library and its AC-3 plugin, so replacing one DLL manually can create a second problem.
Find the owning application
- Note the application named in the error.
- Right-click its desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- In the folder that opens, search for
bass_ac3.dll. - Also check folders named
Plugins,Input,Audio, orCodecs.
Examples of applications that have used this plugin include MediaPortal and MusicBee, but the correct location depends on the program that installed it.
Repair it
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application with an AC-3 file.
If there is no Repair button, open the application’s own launcher or installer and look for Repair, Verify files, or Check for updates.
If repair does not restore the plugin:
- Back up the application’s settings if it provides that option.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official site.
- Install the same architecture the application requires.
- Test AC-3 playback before restoring optional plugins or custom settings.
A clean reinstall is preferable to downloading an isolated DLL because it restores the host application, its BASS files, configuration, and dependencies together.
Fix 2: Restore a quarantined bass_ac3.dll
An antivirus product may remove or quarantine a plugin after an application update or a change in detection rules. Do not disable protection just to force an unknown DLL into place.

Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
bass_ac3.dllor the affected application. - Open the event and review its path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- It came from the known application’s installation directory.
- The application was installed from a trusted official source.
- The path is consistent with the application.
- You understand why Windows Security flagged it.
After restoring it, update the application and run a scan. If the file was found in a temporary folder, a cracked installer, or an unfamiliar program directory, leave it quarantined and investigate the entire program.
Fix 3: Use the official BASS package only when the application expects it
The official BASS distribution lists BASS_AC3 as a Win32 add-on and provides a package named bass_ac324.zip. Use that package only when the application documentation or vendor support specifically identifies BASS_AC3 as the required plugin.
The correct process is:
- Obtain the package from the official BASS distribution.
- Extract the archive to a temporary folder.
- Confirm that the extracted file is
bass_ac3.dll. - Copy it to the application’s documented plugin directory.
- Do not place it in
System32,SysWOW64, or a shared global DLL folder. - Restart the application and test an AC-3 file.
The latest public package is not automatically correct for every old application. An older program may require the version supplied with its installer or a matching BASS core library. If the application vendor supplied its own copy, use that copy instead.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications, but a 32-bit plugin cannot be loaded by a 64-bit application.
The official BASS listing labels BASS_AC3 as Win32. If your application is 64-bit, do not force that DLL into its plugin folder.
Check the application architecture
- Open the affected application.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Locate the application process.
- If Windows displays a 32-bit indication, it is a 32-bit process.
- If no indication appears, check the application’s About page or vendor documentation.
If the application is 32-bit, use the Win32 plugin in the application’s expected folder. If it is 64-bit, look for a vendor-supplied 64-bit plugin or an application update. If no compatible plugin exists, the application vendor must provide the solution.
A plugin-load message can occur even when the file is physically present. A RadioBOSS example demonstrates the same general failure: incompatible 32-bit and 64-bit plugin files cannot be mixed.

Fix 5: Interpret the exact error correctly
“bass_ac3.dll was not found”
The application searched its executable or plugin locations and did not find the file. Repair the application, check quarantine, and confirm the expected plugin directory.

“The program can’t start because bass_ac3.dll is missing”
This usually appears while launching the host application. Restore the application installation rather than copying the DLL into a Windows folder.
“Error loading input plugins: bass_ac3.dll”
The file may exist but still fail to load. Check:
- Whether the plugin matches the application’s architecture.
- Whether the application’s BASS core file is present.
- Whether the plugin is in the folder the application actually scans.
- Whether antivirus blocked the file.
- Whether an older application expects an older plugin version.
“The specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency used by that file. Reinstall the owning application first, then inspect application logs and antivirus history before installing unrelated runtimes.
Fix 6: Do not register this plugin with regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 bass_ac3.dll
as a general repair step. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary BASS audio plugin is loaded by its host application and does not become usable merely because it was registered with Windows.
Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor explicitly instructs you to register a particular DLL and provides the correct command, path, and architecture.

Fix 7: Avoid unnecessary runtimes and Windows codec changes
A Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX repair, or .NET repair may help a separate dependency problem, but none of these automatically replaces an application-local BASS_AC3 plugin.
Likewise, Windows Features do not provide a universal switch for installing bass_ac3.dll. Do not enable random media features or install codec packs before identifying the owning application.

If the application is a Windows N edition and other media features are also missing, check Settings > Apps > Optional features > View features for the Media Feature Pack. Install it only when the application or its documentation identifies missing Windows media components as the problem. It will not replace the application’s own BASS plugin.

Because bass_ac3.dll is normally an application plugin, Windows repair commands are lower-priority fixes. Use them when multiple Windows components are failing, system files are corrupted, or other applications show unrelated system errors.

- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows image. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Neither command normally recreates a BASS plugin stored beside an application.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes this process hard to diagnose. Fix 9: Update drivers only for separate audio symptoms
A driver update is relevant when you also have missing speakers, distorted output, device errors, or failures across several applications. It is not the normal fix for a missing bass_ac3.dll.
To check the audio driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean reinstall, right-click the device, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and then install the driver supplied by the computer or audio-device manufacturer.

Check the file’s path, publisher, and signature
A filename alone does not prove authenticity.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Open file location.
- Search for
bass_ac3.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the General and Details tabs.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists.
- Note the complete path and whether the file is inside the expected application directory.
- Scan the file with Windows Security.
There is no universal fixed file size, description, publisher, or metadata that validates every copy. A file with this name in a random download folder, Windows directory, temporary directory, or unknown game installation deserves suspicion.
If the error started after an update
First use the application’s Verify files, Repair, or rollback option. If the update introduced the failure and the application provides no rollback:

- Select the application.
- Choose Uninstall, or use its installer’s rollback option.
- Reinstall a trusted version supplied by the application vendor.
If a broader Windows change caused several applications to fail, open Control Panel and search for Recovery, then choose Open System Restore. You can also press Win+R, enter rstrui.exe, and press Enter. Use System Restore only when a suitable restore point exists and you understand which recent change will be reversed.

- Keep the owning application updated through its official installer or launcher.
- Do not delete “unused” DLLs from application plugin folders.
- Do not copy
bass_ac3.dllinto Windows system directories. - Keep antivirus protection enabled.
- Save the application’s installer or recovery package when maintaining an older program.
- Use the vendor-supplied plugin when an old application requires a specific version.
- Keep 32-bit applications paired with 32-bit plugins and 64-bit applications paired with compatible 64-bit plugins.

Is bass_ac3.dll a Microsoft file?
