Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The bassopus.dll error belongs to an application, not to Windows itself. Before changing anything, record:
- Which program displays the error: an audio player, game, broadcast tool, media utility, or another application.
- When it appears: while starting the program, opening an Opus file, loading a plug-in, or after an update.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit: this determines which copy of the file it can load.
- Whether
bass.dllis present in the same application or plug-in directory. - What changed recently: a reinstall, update, migration to another computer, antivirus event, cleanup utility, or manual plug-in change.
bassopus.dll is the BASSOPUS add-on from Un4seen Developments’ BASS audio library. It decodes and plays Opus files and streams, requires BASS 2.4, and is normally loaded by the application as a private audio plug-in. It is not a Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ system component.

What the bassopus.dll error means
Windows may show variations such as:
- “The program can’t start because bassopus.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because bassopus.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading bassopus.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because bassopus.dll was not found.”
- “bassopus.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. The file may be absent, damaged, the wrong architecture, incompatible with the installed BASS library, or present but unable to load one of its dependencies.
If only one application fails, repair that application first. Do not begin by copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
This is the safest and most likely solution because the application normally supplies its own compatible bassopus.dll, bass.dll, and other plug-ins.
If the application has a repair or verification option
- Close the affected application.
- Open its launcher or management program.
- Look for Settings, Manage, Properties, Support, Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair.
- Run the repair or verification process.
- Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
- Start the application and repeat the action that previously triggered the error.
For a game, use the launcher’s file-verification command before downloading individual files. For a desktop program, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the program, choose the three-dot menu, and select Advanced options if Repair is available.
A successful repair restores the application’s private files and allows it to open the relevant Opus file or stream. If the error remains, continue with a complete reinstall.

- Back up the application’s settings, playlists, profiles, or saved data if the program stores them outside its installation folder.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer, publisher, or store that supplied the program.
- Install the same application again.
- Test it before restoring optional plug-ins or custom modifications.
If the program was copied from another computer, migrated manually, or installed from an old archive, obtain a current installer from its official vendor instead. The correct copy of bassopus.dll may be specific to that application’s BASS version.
If reinstalling works, do not replace the restored file with a newer standalone copy. Applications may intentionally ship an older compatible build.
Fix 2: Check the application and plug-in directory
bassopus.dll is normally beside the application executable or in the application’s plug-in directory. The exact location depends on the program.

- Look for the program’s main folder and any folders named
Plugins,Plug-ins,Addons, orComponents. - Check whether
bassopus.dllis present. - Check whether
bass.dllis also present where the application expects it. - Do not move either file unless the application’s documentation specifically identifies that directory.
A file’s presence does not prove that it is correct. It could be corrupted, intended for another program, built for the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the host’s BASS version.

If the application uses plug-ins, restore the complete plug-in set from the application installer rather than copying only bassopus.dll.
Fix 3: Match 32-bit and 64-bit files correctly
A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit BASSOPUS module. A 64-bit application needs the x64 module. This remains true on 64-bit Windows: a 64-bit operating system does not make every installed application 64-bit.
To check the program’s architecture:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and inspect the program’s installation details if shown.
- Check the application’s documentation or support information.
- Right-click the main executable, select Properties, and review the Details tab. This may identify the build, but it does not always state the architecture.
- If the program is running, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and check the process name. Some Windows versions mark 32-bit processes with a suffix such as
(32 bit). - If uncertain, use the application vendor’s installer or support documentation rather than guessing.
The official BASSOPUS package supplies separate Windows modules, including a 32-bit BASSOPUS.DLL and a 64-bit copy under an X64 directory. Begin at the official BASS download page and select the BASSOPUS package that matches the host application. Keep the file with the application or plug-in files, not in a Windows system directory.
Fix 4: Restore a matching BASS and BASSOPUS pair
BASSOPUS requires BASS 2.4. A compatible-looking bassopus.dll can still fail when the application loads a different or incompatible bass.dll.
This commonly happens after:
- Copying plug-ins from another application.
- Updating only one audio component.
- Restoring an old application folder over a newer installation.
- Installing a plug-in from a different package.
- Replacing files manually after an antivirus quarantine.
The safer procedure is:
- Uninstall or repair the affected application.
- Remove only leftover files that the application vendor identifies as safe to remove.
- Reinstall the complete application package.
- Allow the installer to restore
bass.dll,bassopus.dll, and related files together. - Test the application before adding third-party plug-ins.
When an application loads BASS add-ons, a missing file can produce a file-open error. An invalid, incompatible, or incorrectly formatted plug-in can produce a file-format or plug-in-loading error. A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that a dependency of bassopus.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself is absent.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and security history
If the file disappeared after a scan, update, or cleanup operation, inspect the security product before downloading anything.
Windows Security
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
bassopus.dll. - If the file belongs to a trusted installation, confirm the application’s source before restoring it.
- Update or reinstall the application from its official vendor.
- Run a new scan after the application is restored.
Do not assume every quarantine event is a false positive. If the file was downloaded from an untrusted source, remove that copy and reinstall the application from its official package.
If the file repeatedly disappears after reinstalling, check:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Third-party antivirus quarantine.
- Controlled folder access.
- Application permissions.
- Cleanup or optimization utilities.
- Whether the launcher and installer use different installation directories.
- Whether the application is being started from an old shortcut.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other symptoms point to Windows
Because bassopus.dll is an application component, Windows repair commands are secondary. Use them when several unrelated programs fail, Windows reports broader corruption, installers malfunction, or the problem continues after a clean application reinstall.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker:
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application again.
The commands repair Windows components. They do not download or replace an application’s private BASSOPUS plug-in.

When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM does not show what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when bassopus.dll belongs to that program.
Fix 7: Update drivers only for broader audio problems
A graphics or audio driver is not the normal source of a missing bassopus.dll message. Consider driver work only if multiple applications have audio failures, Windows shows a device error, or the problem began after a hardware or driver change.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device and choose Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not uninstall a working audio device merely because bassopus.dll is missing. If the device has no error and only one application fails, return to the application repair steps.
When checking many hardware vendors and driver versions manually is creating guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that supplied bassopus.dll.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid standalone DLL download sites and file-sharing links. A downloaded copy may contain malware, use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, be incompatible with the application’s BASS version, or be modified without a trustworthy chain of custody. Even a genuine file may not fix the missing dependency or damaged installation that caused the error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse these sources instead:
- The application developer’s official installer or launcher.
- The store that supplied the application.
- The official BASS download package from Un4seen Developments when the application deliberately uses BASSOPUS as a plug-in.
- Microsoft’s official repair guidance for Windows components.
Never copy bassopus.dll into System32 or SysWOW64. That can create version conflicts and does not repair the application’s private plug-in directory.
Why regsvr32 normally does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 bassopus.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. BASSOPUS is loaded by the BASS plug-in system, not registered as a system-wide COM component. Running regsvr32 will normally fail with an entry-point error or change nothing.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Use this order:
- Confirm the exact program shown in the error.
- Confirm whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Confirm that the launcher and shortcut point to the same installation.
- Check that
bass.dllandbassopus.dllcame from the same application package. - Review antivirus quarantine and controlled-folder access.
- Remove third-party plug-ins temporarily and test the clean installation.
- Contact the application vendor with the exact error text, application version, installation path, and Windows version.
- Investigate disk errors, malware, or a damaged user profile only if files continue disappearing or multiple applications are affected.
FAQ
Is bassopus.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a BASSOPUS audio add-on supplied by applications that use the BASS library. Windows Update does not normally provide it.

What applications use bassopus.dll?
The owning application varies. Audio players, broadcast tools, games, and other media programs may redistribute or load it. The program named in the error determines the correct installer and directory.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I put bassopus.dll in System32?
No. Restore it through the application installer or its plug-in directory.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a general remedy. Install those runtimes only when the host application explicitly requires one or reports a separate runtime error.
The file exists. Why does Windows still say it is missing?
The file may be the wrong architecture, corrupted, incompatible with bass.dll, or unable to load a dependency. Reinstall the complete application package rather than replacing only the visible DLL.
Should I install both 32-bit and 64-bit copies?
No. Use the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit module even on 64-bit Windows.
Is System Restore the answer?
Only as a last resort when the failure clearly began after a specific system or application change. Restore the correct application package first.
