Batman: Arkham Shadow looked like a recognisable Arkham adventure reworked for first-person VR: its first hands-on preview featured combo combat, stealth, gadgets and detective work in tightly designed spaces. But the coverage was based on short demos in August 2024, not the finished game, so it offered promise rather than a verdict on the full experience.
What the first preview covered
IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey published his preview on August 27, 2024, after playing the opening 45 minutes. Logan Moore’s ComicBook.com preview, also published August 27, described a roughly 45-minute demo at a Meta-hosted event. Those sessions provide an early look at the game, not a review of its complete release.
What Arkham Shadow gameplay looked like in VR
The previews presented the game as a first-person VR take on familiar Arkham activities, including combat, stealth encounters, gadget use, detective work and traversal. The demo also included optional puzzles and collectibles. ComicBook.com described a more contained, elaborate layout reminiscent of Batman: Arkham Asylum rather than a sprawling open world.
Combat and stealth
Combat used combos, while stealth sections echoed the series’ “Predator” encounters. IGN’s early impression was positive about how those familiar actions felt translated to VR, though that judgment reflects only the short preview session.

At Gamescom, Camouflaj founder and studio head Ryan Payton described the combat design as combining “the Rocket Punch that we developed for Iron Man VR,” the rhythmic feel of Beat Saber and the time manipulation of Superhot VR. MIXED published the quote in its Gamescom preview.
Detective work and exploration
Detective mode, gadgets and traversal featured alongside combat. In the demo, the game’s more confined spaces provided the setting for those activities, with optional puzzles and collectibles offering additional things to find. The preview coverage does not establish how these systems develop across the full game.

Where Arkham Shadow fits in the series
The previews placed the story between Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum. ComicBook.com characterized the structure as closer to Arkham Asylum than to an open-world entry. IGN’s demo did not yet bring the story into focus for McCaffrey, so the short session could not establish how well the narrative works as a whole.
Is it a “real” Arkham game?
The preview suggests that Arkham Shadow aims to preserve recognizable series elements—combo-based fighting, stealth, gadgets and detective work—while changing the viewpoint and interaction for VR. That makes it recognizably Arkham in its activities, but the first-person format and contained environments are meaningful differences. A 45-minute demo can show the design direction; it cannot settle whether the full game delivers the depth or pacing players expect from the series.

What the previews left uncertain
McCaffrey’s early impressions were encouraging about the feel of combat and familiar Arkham actions, but he also noted that onboarding ran longer than he wanted and that the visuals did not approach the graphical quality of the earlier console trilogy. These are observations from his preview session, not findings about every part of the final game. The story had not yet come into focus in that demo, either.

If you already own a compatible headset, the preview offers a reason to watch the game: it showed a recognizable Arkham mix adapted for VR. If you would need to buy a headset solely for this title, the preview is not enough to justify that purchase. IGN explicitly considered that question and said its 45-minute demo was too early to make the call. The coverage did not establish that the game alone warrants a new headset.
