Choose Batocera when you want a dedicated retro-gaming interface; choose a Raspberry Pi setup when you want to select the operating system and shape the device for broader uses. You can also put Batocera on a supported Raspberry Pi board.
What are you actually comparing?
Batocera is a Linux-based distribution built for retro gaming. Raspberry Pi is a family of small computers. A more useful comparison is therefore Batocera as a dedicated gaming system versus a Raspberry Pi retro-gaming build, which could run Batocera or another operating system such as Raspberry Pi OS. Raspberry Pi describes its OS as its officially supported general-purpose operating system; its downloads are available from the Raspberry Pi OS downloads page.

Batocera provides downloadable images for Raspberry Pi 4 B and Raspberry Pi 5 B on its downloads page. Raspberry Pi itself has also named Batocera as an option for Pi 5: in its article about projects for the 1GB Pi 5, it says the choice of OS is up to the user and lists Batocera among options that should work. The same article distinguishes RetroPie, which it says must be installed manually in Raspberry Pi OS because there is no ready-made Pi 5 OS image for it: Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 project article.
Which setup fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A console-like system mainly for retro games | Batocera | It is a gaming-focused distribution with its own installation guide and compatible board images. See the Batocera installation guide. |
| One small computer that can also serve other purposes | Raspberry Pi with an OS chosen for your needs | The Pi is hardware, so you choose the OS and software. Raspberry Pi OS is the manufacturer-supported general-purpose option. |
| Retro gaming on a Raspberry Pi specifically | Either, depending on the experience you want | Batocera has Pi 4 B and Pi 5 B images listed, while the broader Pi setup lets you choose among operating systems and gaming software. |
| A particular console or game is the deciding factor | Check the compatibility entry for your hardware first | Support differs by emulated system and platform; a result for a PC does not establish the same support on a Pi. |

Pi 4 B and Pi 5 B images
Batocera lists images for Raspberry Pi 4 B and Raspberry Pi 5 B. Its single-board-computer guidance, however, describes Pi 5 support as beta. Because those two official project pages characterize Pi 5 support differently, verify the current image and release-specific notes before buying a board or installing: Batocera’s single-board-computer guidance.

Compatibility depends on the platform
Do not assume that a console listed as supported will run equally well on every device. Batocera’s compatibility matrix separates modern x86-64 PCs, Pi 5, and Pi 4. Find the system you intend to emulate and read the column for the hardware you plan to use. The matrix is a more useful check than a blanket claim that a board can emulate a particular game; it does not establish a universal performance winner between Batocera and Raspberry Pi setups.
What do you need to get started?
Hardware and boot media
A Raspberry Pi needs boot media containing an OS image and an appropriate power supply. Raspberry Pi says microSD cards are commonly used as boot devices in its getting-started documentation. For Pi 5, Raspberry Pi identifies its 27W USB-C supply and recommends 5V/5A; its power guidance says that using a 5V/3A supply limits power available to downstream peripherals to 600mA. Check the current Raspberry Pi power and image-installation guidance when selecting a supply.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
The parts around the board depend on how you intend to play. Raspberry Pi’s documented RetroPie setup lists a suitable power supply, microSD card, display connection and monitor, USB flash drive, USB controller, and another computer for initial setup, in addition to the board. That is one tutorial’s RetroPie parts list, not a universal minimum for every Batocera installation.
Installing the system
For Batocera, start with its installation guide and select the image for the exact board. For Raspberry Pi OS, use the official OS downloads page and Raspberry Pi’s imaging instructions. In either case, confirm that the image and board match before writing the boot media.

Games, ROMs, and BIOS files
Batocera says it includes a selection of free, legally distributable ROMs and makes additional free games available through its Content Downloader. It does not include copyrighted BIOS files; users must provide their own. That does not mean commercial games or BIOS files are bundled with the system. Make sure you have the right to use any game or firmware files you add; applicable rules depend on the files and jurisdiction. Batocera explains its own distribution practice in its games and BIOS guide.
For a Raspberry Pi build using other gaming software, the exact setup steps and file requirements depend on the software you choose. Raspberry Pi’s RetroPie tutorial is one documented route, not a universal guide to every Pi-based retro-gaming system.

How to choose without overbuying
- Decide whether this is a dedicated console or a multipurpose computer. If retro gaming is the main job, start with Batocera. If you want a general-purpose Pi whose software can change with your plans, start by choosing the OS for those uses.
- Pick the emulated systems you care about. Check Batocera’s compatibility matrix for the specific Pi model or other platform before choosing hardware.
- Confirm the exact board image and its support status. For Pi 5 in particular, compare the current downloads listing with the board guidance and release notes.
- List the essentials for your chosen route. Budget for the board, compatible power supply, boot media, display connection, and controller as applicable; do not treat one software tutorial’s full supply list as mandatory for all builds.
- Plan for game and firmware files. Confirm that you can lawfully use the files you intend to load before assuming a setup will include them.
There is no established universal cost or performance winner in this comparison. The total depends on the board and accessories you select, while practical compatibility depends on the system being emulated and the platform.
