What is Battle Brothers?
Battle Brothers is a turn-based strategy RPG set in a gritty, low-power medieval fantasy world. You lead a mercenary company through a procedurally generated open-world campaign, choosing where to travel, whom to recruit, which contracts to pursue, and how to train and equip your fighters. Its appeal rests on managing risk as much as winning battles: every recruit, piece of equipment, and tactical decision affects the company’s prospects.
The game was released on March 24, 2017. Metacritic lists PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One among its platforms. Metacritic’s overview and Overhype Studios’ Steam listing describe the game and its campaign.
What do critics think of Battle Brothers?
The broad critical consensus is favorable, but the game is a better fit for players who enjoy hard-earned mastery than those seeking a welcoming introduction to tactical strategy.

| PC Gamer, Ian Birnbaum | 84 | Individual PC review published April 4, 2017; not an aggregate score. Review |
PC Gamer’s Ian Birnbaum praised the strategy and the freedom to shape a mercenary company, while pointing to clunky inventory management and a lack of tutorials. His 2017 review called it “a cleverly constructed, carefully balanced board game” and argued that inventory friction should not put players off an otherwise excellent strategy RPG. What critics praise—and what may frustrate you
Tactical battles and meaningful choices
Critics highlight the depth of the tactical battles and the way equipment and company management feed into decisions on the battlefield. The mercenary premise gives those choices a clear focus: build a band of fighters, prepare them for dangerous work, and accept contracts with the resources you have. That freedom is central to the game’s appeal, but it also means players must learn its systems largely through experience. Metacritic’s PC critic reviews collect reviews praising its strategy and tactical combat.

Difficulty, randomness, and repetition
Some critics describe the game as unforgiving and difficult to master, with randomness that will divide players. A run can demand patience and adaptation rather than steady progress on a predictable path. Other criticism points to a world that can feel monotonous or drag over time. If you prefer tightly scripted stories, gentle onboarding, or reliably controlled outcomes, those qualities may outweigh the strategic depth.
Inventory and onboarding friction
PC Gamer specifically flags clunky inventories and insufficient tutorials. That matters because the game asks players to make interconnected choices about recruiting, training, equipment, and tactics; newcomers may need to work out systems without much in-game guidance. The result is rewarding for players willing to learn by doing, but potentially opaque for anyone expecting a guided introduction. PC Gamer’s review.

Is Battle Brothers too difficult for beginners?
It can be, especially if you want the game to explain its systems clearly or protect you from costly mistakes. Critics repeatedly identify a steep learning curve and inadequate tutorial support. That does not mean a beginner cannot enjoy it: the game’s tactical depth and equipment decisions can reward persistence. It does mean that enjoying the challenge—and accepting uncertainty and occasional frustration—is more important than having prior expertise.
- Likely a good fit: you enjoy learning complex strategy systems, adapting to setbacks, and managing a company over an open-ended campaign.
- Potentially a poor fit: you want a strong tutorial, a forgiving introduction, or a campaign with little repetition or randomness.
Is Battle Brothers good on Nintendo Switch?
Switch critics recognize the game’s depth and replayability, but their reviews also report platform-specific usability concerns: long loading times and controls or an interface that can be difficult to adapt to. The steep learning curve and tutorial concerns apply here too. These are Switch review observations, not evidence of a controlled performance comparison across platforms; a PC review score should not be treated as a verdict on every version. Who should play it?
Battle Brothers is worth considering if you want a demanding tactical RPG built around a mercenary company, flexible campaign decisions, and consequential equipment choices. Its favorable critical reception reflects those strengths, not a promise that every player will find the experience smooth. The main trade-off is clear: the deeper and more open-ended systems come with a steep learning curve, limited tutorial help, and some interface friction. Platform-specific usability concerns are also part of the Switch review picture.
