When a battle royale crashes, work through the fixes in this order: confirm the platform and game are up to date, repair the game files, update the graphics driver, let any required shader process finish, then reduce graphics load and remove software conflicts. Check heat and airflow if the crash appears after a long session. Only after those reversible checks should you reset local settings or reinstall. This sequence applies to Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone and PUBG on PC, with equivalent update and restart steps on PlayStation and Xbox.
The timing of the crash is useful evidence. A failure at launch often points to damaged files, an incompatible driver or a background conflict; a crash while loading into a match can involve shader preparation or a sudden graphics-memory demand; a crash only after an update can involve stale local settings; and a crash after an hour of play can indicate heat or restricted airflow. Record that timing before changing anything.

Identify the pattern before changing settings
Write down the game, platform, exact point of failure and anything that changed immediately beforehand. Note whether you see an error code, a black screen, a freeze that recovers, a desktop exit or a full console restart. Also record the game version, Windows version if you use a PC, graphics-card model, driver date, and whether the problem began after a game, driver or Windows update.
| What you observe | Start with | Why this order helps |
|---|---|---|
| Crash before the main menu | Restart, install pending updates, then repair the installation | These steps address incomplete files and platform-state problems without changing personal settings. |
| Crash while entering a match or compiling shaders | Allow the title’s shader preparation to finish; then lower video settings | Interrupting shader work or exhausting graphics memory can make the loading transition fail. |
| Crash immediately after a patch | Repair files and reset the game’s local settings file | An update can leave a damaged file or an old configuration that the new build cannot read. |
| Crash after extended play | Check temperatures, vents, fans and room airflow | Heat-related instability usually appears after the system has been under load for some time. |
| Only one game crashes while other games work | Use that game’s launcher repair and support process | A title-specific file or setting is more likely than a general hardware failure. |
1. Check requirements and platform state
On a Windows PC
- Compare your processor, memory, graphics card and available storage with the game’s current minimum requirements. A system that ran an older build may no longer meet a patched title’s minimum, especially if free storage is low.
- Open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11 or Windows 10, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when asked. Do not troubleshoot a crash from a half-finished update state.
- Close the game and its launcher completely before restarting. In Windows, use the notification-area exit command for the launcher if it has one; otherwise restart the PC so stuck launcher processes are cleared.
- Confirm that the game is installed on a drive with comfortable free space. File repair and shader caches need working room even when the installed game itself fits.
On PlayStation or Xbox
- Restart the console rather than only returning to the dashboard. A full restart clears a temporary process or memory condition.
- Install the console’s pending system update and the game’s current title update.
- Check free storage and remove or move unused games if the drive is nearly full.
- If the game is on external storage, test it from the internal drive when possible. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that the external drive is defective.
2. Repair the installation before reinstalling
Publishers treat missing or corrupt files as a standard crash branch. Verification compares the installed data with the launcher or platform copy and replaces what is missing or damaged. It is normally faster and less disruptive than a complete reinstall, so do it before uninstalling.

Fortnite through the Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite, select the three-dot menu beside the title and choose Manage.
- Select Verify. Let the process finish; do not launch the game while it is checking.
- Start Fortnite and test the same action that previously crashed. If the launcher reports repaired files, note that result in your troubleshooting record.
Warzone through Battle.net
- Open Battle.net and select Call of Duty: Warzone.
- Open the gear icon next to the Play button.
- Choose Scan and Repair, then Begin Scan.
- Wait for the scan and any download to finish, restart Battle.net if requested, and test the game.
Warzone or PUBG through Steam
- Open Steam, go to Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to complete the check.
- Restart Steam before testing. A message that some files were reacquired is an actionable result, not a failure of the verification process.
3. Update the graphics driver and Windows
Outdated graphics drivers are identified by game support teams as causes of crashes, freezes and black screens. Install the current driver supplied by your graphics hardware manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. Use the manufacturer’s official support page and select the exact graphics-card or integrated-graphics model and your Windows edition.
- Identify the adapter by opening Device Manager > Display adapters. If two adapters are listed on a laptop, update the driver for the adapter the game uses and apply the laptop maker’s chipset or graphics package when its instructions require it.
- Install the current driver, restart Windows, and test the game with default graphics-control-panel settings.
- If the crash began directly after a driver update, use Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when that button is available. This is a targeted diagnostic; return to a current supported driver once a compatible release is confirmed.
- Do not install several driver packages at once or use random “DLL fix” downloads. A driver change should be traceable so you can undo it.
Keep Windows updated as well. A game update may depend on operating-system components that are absent from an old build, while a pending restart can leave the graphics stack in an unusual state.
4. Let title-specific first-run work finish
Warzone shader preloading
Warzone can preload shaders from the main menu. Let the shader-preloading indicator reach completion before leaving that menu or entering a match. Activision warns that interrupting this process can cause performance problems. After a driver change, the game may need to build shaders again; allow the process to complete even if the first launch takes longer than usual.

Other games
Fortnite and PUBG can also perform first-run or post-update asset work. Do not force-close a game while it is clearly compiling shaders, validating files or applying an update. If the process is genuinely stuck, capture the on-screen message and elapsed time before restarting so support can distinguish a slow first run from a hang.
5. Reduce graphics load and remove conflicts
Lower settings temporarily to determine whether the crash is caused by a peak in graphics or memory demand. These are reversible tests, not a permanent quality recommendation.
Use a conservative video preset
- Open the game’s video or graphics menu and select a lower preset.
- Reduce texture quality, shadow quality, effects, view distance and resolution scale one group at a time. If there is a video-memory indicator, keep it below the warning range.
- Use a frame-rate cap rather than an unlimited frame rate while testing. A cap reduces sudden load spikes.
- Apply the change, restart the game and repeat the same map or menu transition that failed.
If lowering settings stops the crash, raise one setting at a time later. The setting that reintroduces the failure is useful evidence for a support ticket.

Reset graphics-control-panel overrides
Open your NVIDIA, AMD or Intel graphics control panel and restore the game’s profile to its default values. Temporarily disable forced sharpening, injected frame-rate controls, experimental latency modes and custom per-game profiles. The goal is to test the game with the settings its developers expect, not to remove features permanently.
Disable overlays and background utilities
Turn off overlays from the launcher, chat client, recording software, hardware-monitoring tools and other utilities that draw over the game or hook into its rendering process. Close browser windows and nonessential launchers while testing. Re-enable one item at a time after the crash is resolved; that identifies a conflict without requiring a permanent uninstall.
Use a Windows clean boot
- Press Windows key + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup items.
- Apply the changes and restart Windows. Test the game before opening other utilities.
- When testing is complete, return to
msconfigand re-enable services and startup items in groups so you can identify a conflict. Do not leave security software disabled for normal use.
6. Check heat, fans and airflow
If the game is stable for a while and then crashes, inspect cooling before changing advanced settings. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance identifies overheating as a possible cause.

- Shut down the PC, unplug it, and let it cool before cleaning.
- Remove dust from intake and exhaust areas and from accessible fan filters. Use short bursts of air and hold a fan blade still while cleaning it; do not spin a disconnected fan at high speed.
- Place a laptop on a hard, flat surface rather than bedding. Keep desktop vents clear of walls, curtains and other obstructions.
- Check that every visible fan starts during a gaming load. A fan that stops, rattles or reports an error needs hardware service.
- Test at a lower frame-rate cap after cleaning. If crashes still follow a repeatable temperature rise, stop stress-testing and have the system inspected.
An electric air duster can help remove dust from vents and fans, but cleaning is only one part of the diagnosis. It cannot correct a failing fan, a blocked heatsink inside a laptop or an unstable power supply.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Reset local settings, then reinstall if necessary
Reset Fortnite’s local settings after an update
Fortnite support documents deleting the GameUserSettings file when an update leaves local graphics settings unusable. Before doing so, write down custom key binds and display preferences. Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher, make a backup copy of the file, then delete the original so the next launch creates a fresh default. Reapply settings gradually rather than importing an old configuration immediately.
Reinstall only after verification and driver checks
- Back up screenshots, recordings, locally stored configuration files and any settings you need to recreate.
- Uninstall the affected title from its launcher or platform library.
- Restart the PC or console.
- Install the current game build again, preferably on a drive with ample free space.
- Run the game once with default settings and no overlays before restoring custom profiles.
A reinstall is justified when verification repeatedly reacquires the same files, the installation cannot complete an update, or the game remains broken after the driver and conflict tests. It is not a substitute for checking a failing drive or overheating hardware.

8. Escalate with useful evidence
Persistent crashes need reproducible details, not random patches. Prepare a short report containing:
- Game title, platform, launcher and game version.
- Windows edition and build, graphics adapter and driver version, processor and memory.
- The exact crash time, location in the game, and whether it happens every time.
- Recent updates, repaired-file results, settings changes and whether a clean boot changed the behavior.
- The complete error text or a screenshot, plus a description of any freeze, black screen or restart.
- Relevant diagnostic files. PUBG crash reports are stored in
%localappdata%TslGameSavedCrashes. Riot’s support process asks players to attach logs to a support ticket; use the log-collection instructions provided with that ticket.
Send the report through the game’s official support channel. Never download an individual DLL from an unofficial site or apply an unverified patch to silence an error; that can introduce a new problem and removes the evidence support needs.
A practical decision order
| Stage | Action | Reversible? | Evidence gained |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Updates, restart and requirements check | Yes | Platform and version state |
| 2 | Launcher file verification | Yes | Missing or replaced files |
| 3 | Official graphics-driver update | Usually; rollback may be available | Driver compatibility |
| 4 | Shader completion and default first run | Yes | Post-update processing status |
| 5 | Lower settings, disable overlays, clean boot | Yes | Load or software-conflict pattern |
| 6 | Clean vents and improve airflow | Yes | Heat-related timing |
| 7 | Reset local settings or reinstall | No for deleted settings; reinstall takes time | Configuration or installation fault |
| 8 | Support ticket with logs | Yes | Publisher-level diagnosis |
Following this order keeps low-risk, high-information checks ahead of destructive changes. It also gives support a clear record of what was tested instead of a list of unrelated tweaks.
