If HDR is grayed out in Battlefield 2042 on PS5, first check the console’s HDR setting at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. PS5 system settings can affect HDR output, but available evidence does not confirm that Update 4.0 caused the game-menu symptom or provide a verified post-update fix.
Did Battlefield 2042 Update 4.0 cause the HDR issue?
That has not been established. Players reported that Battlefield 2042’s HDR options were grayed out, including one Reddit report that described the problem after Update 4.0. Those posts establish that players experienced the symptom, not that the update caused it. EA’s Update #4.0 notes list fixes and settings changes but do not mention HDR. That means the notes document neither an HDR fix nor a confirmed HDR regression; they cannot rule out an indirect effect.
HDR calibration problems were also discussed before Update 4.0. In an older EA Forums post, one PS5 player said Patch 1.0 resolved their calibration issue. That anecdote does not establish that the earlier calibration problem and the later grayed-out option have the same cause.
Check HDR mode in PS5 settings
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR.
- Review the selected mode. Sony describes On When Supported as displaying non-HDR-compatible games and apps in SDR. Always On converts even non-HDR-compatible content to HDR output.
- Return to Battlefield 2042 and check whether HDR output and the in-game control are available.
The two modes change how the console outputs content; neither is documented as a universal fix for Battlefield 2042’s grayed-out setting. An older EA Forums discussion includes a player who said enabling HDR in PS5 settings restored access to the game option. Treat that as an anecdotal lead, not a verified fix for a problem after Update 4.0. Read the EA Forums discussion.

Review the PS5 HDR calibration
From Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, select Adjust HDR to review the console’s HDR calibration. Sony documents this system-level option, but its instructions do not prescribe particular calibration values for Battlefield 2042. Sony’s PS5 HDR instructions explain both the output modes and calibration menu.
If the option is still grayed out
Close and reopen the game after checking the console setting, then look again at its video options and HDR output. If the control remains unavailable, the official documentation cited here does not identify a game-specific post-4.0 fix. Sony says PS5 consoles support HDR, while image quality depends on the home entertainment setup; the available sources do not identify a particular TV, HDMI cable, replacement part, or repair as the solution. Avoid treating a hardware purchase or reinstall as a proven remedy without evidence tying it to this symptom.
