EA acknowledged that players had made servers specifically to farm XP, restored progression caps after an imbalance, and said it would monitor and remove farm servers when needed. That was a historical enforcement statement, not confirmation of today’s server population or rewards for idling.
Did Battlefield 2042 Portal XP farms exist?
Yes. In its launch update, EA said it had observed “a significant imbalance in the earn rates for experience (XP), particularly in Battlefield Portal where players created servers designed specifically to farm XP.” EA said it had temporarily disabled progression across Solo, Co-Op, and custom Portal experiences, then reintroduced caps and would continue monitoring XP-farm servers, removing them from the pool when needed.

This confirms the historical existence of XP-farming servers and EA’s response. It does not establish how many such servers are active now, what share of visible Portal servers they represent, or whether unattended players currently earn XP.
Can you get XP AFK in Portal now?
The sources available do not establish whether a player who leaves a character unattended currently receives XP, or at what rate or progression tier. EA’s launch-era update documents a past imbalance and response; it is not a current account of AFK rewards or enforcement. There is no verified current server count or representative measurement here to support saying Portal is “full of” AFK farms.

Why Portal servers can have different progression
Portal is a configurable system, not one uniform ruleset. EA’s Portal introduction describes custom modes, modifiers, AI configuration, and a Rules Editor for compatible modes. Those tools let creators make different experiences, but the existence of customization does not prove that a particular server awards XP for idling.
BFPortal.gg’s community-maintained XP/Progression Limitations reference says modifiers and Rules Editor settings affect progression. It describes Full, Moderate, and Restricted progression labels and says the builder displays an indicator; examples in the reference associate some settings with Moderate progression and unchanged settings with Full progression. This is secondary documentation, not a current authoritative EA policy, and it does not give present-day AFK XP rates.

What XP was designed to reward
In a separate launch-era progression briefing, EA said its design prioritized playing objectives and staying with a team or squad until the match ended, followed by kills, assists, and other support actions. It also described hardware mastery as a separate progression path. That explains why XP farms raised concerns, but the briefing does not provide a current Portal formula, rate, or cap.
Does Portal XP farming still work?
That cannot be answered definitively from the available evidence. EA’s published account verifies that it responded to XP farms after launch, while the community progression reference explains how configuration can affect progression. Neither gives a current, measured answer about unattended XP earnings or the prevalence of active farms. Treat claims that a particular server or method reliably grants AFK XP as unverified unless they come with current, reproducible evidence.

Creating a Portal experience versus running a server
EA says its web-based Portal tools can be used to create and share an experience without owning Battlefield 2042, but starting a server running that experience requires the game. See EA’s explanation of how Portal works. This distinction describes access to the creation tools; it does not indicate that a custom experience will provide unrestricted progression.
