Players whose compatible systems have Secure Boot disabled may now see a message saying that the feature is required before the game will launch.
The original headline referred to “Battlefield 2024,” but the affected game is Battlefield 2042. EA’s change is aimed at strengthening protection against cheats that attempt to load during the Windows startup process. It does not mean that every Battlefield game, every PC, or any console version has the same requirement.

What changed in Battlefield 2042 Update 8.8.0?
EA’s Update 8.8.0, released on May 27, 2025, made Secure Boot a requirement on PC hardware that supports the feature. If a player launches Battlefield 2042 with Secure Boot disabled, the game can display a message requiring it to be enabled.
The requirement is conditional rather than universal. EA’s wording concerns supported PC hardware; it does not establish that every computer, every Battlefield title, or console players are affected. The update also brought back the time-limited Battle of Nordvik event, but the Secure Boot check is the more significant change for PC players.

The “Battlefield 2024” wording comes from the original Tom’s Hardware headline. EA’s official game and update documentation identify the title as Battlefield 2042.
Why EA is requiring Secure Boot
EA says the change is intended to provide a higher standard of trust and safety and to strengthen defenses against cheats that try to enter the system during the Windows boot process.
Secure Boot helps establish a trusted startup chain before Windows loads. A cheat or other malicious program that manages to operate at that early stage may be difficult for software running later in Windows to detect. Requiring Secure Boot gives EA an additional signal that the PC began operation using trusted, digitally signed boot software.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That is a defensive measure, not a guarantee that cheating has been eliminated. Secure Boot is designed to address a particular boot-time attack surface; it is not a complete anti-cheat system, a virus scanner, or proof that a player’s entire computer is free of malicious software.
EA anticheat and Secure Boot are different technologies
Battlefield 2042 had already moved to EA’s in-house kernel-mode EA anticheat in October 2023. EA has explained that cheats operating at kernel level can be invisible to anti-cheat software running only in normal user space. Its protected anti-cheat processes run while the game is running.

Secure Boot is a separate layer. It is a UEFI firmware security feature, not EA software and not something that players install from the EA app. EA is using the trusted-startup state provided by the PC as part of its broader anti-cheat approach.
In simple terms, the technologies operate at different points:
- Secure Boot: helps control which trusted, digitally signed software can run during the computer’s startup sequence.
- EA anticheat: monitors and protects the game environment while Battlefield 2042 is running.
- The May 2025 change: adds a Secure Boot check before or during the game’s launch process on supported PCs.
Microsoft describes Secure Boot as a UEFI feature intended to prevent untrusted software from loading in the pre-Windows boot chain. EA’s use of that feature is specifically connected to its anti-cheat goals.
Why the comparison with VALORANT makes sense—and where it stops
The comparison with VALORANT is valid at a broad level. Riot says VALORANT requires Secure Boot for Windows 11 players and treats it as a universal requirement for Vanguard Pre-Check. Riot also links the feature to defenses against pre-OS and bootkit-style cheating.
Battlefield 2042 has now joined games such as VALORANT in checking this part of the PC security configuration. However, that does not show that EA copied Riot or uses the same software. VALORANT uses Riot Vanguard, while Battlefield 2042 uses EA’s own anticheat and Javelin ecosystem.

A more accurate comparison is that both publishers are using trusted startup as one part of their anti-cheat strategy, while implementing it through separate systems.
How to check Secure Boot before changing BIOS settings
Do not begin by changing random firmware options. First check how the existing Windows installation is configured.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
msinfo32and press Enter. - In System Information, find BIOS Mode.
- Confirm that BIOS Mode says UEFI.
- Check Secure Boot State. The desired value is On.
EA’s support requirements also include TPM 2.0 enabled, a Windows system disk using the GPT partition style, and firmware configured for UEFI mode. A PC can have a modern processor and motherboard yet still report the wrong state if Windows was installed in legacy BIOS mode or the relevant firmware settings are disabled.
What to do if Secure Boot is disabled
If the system already uses UEFI and reports Secure Boot as Off, the next step is to consult the documentation for the exact motherboard or prebuilt PC model. Firmware menus and labels vary substantially between manufacturers and BIOS versions. There is no safe, universal sequence of menu selections that applies to every PC.
Before changing firmware settings:
- Back up important files and make sure you can recover Windows if the system fails to boot.
- Record the current firmware configuration if the manufacturer provides a way to do so.
- Check the PC or motherboard maker’s instructions for enabling Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, and UEFI mode.
- If the computer belongs to an organization, ask the administrator before changing security settings.
- Stop and seek manufacturer or professional assistance if the instructions do not clearly match the system.
EA warns that incorrect BIOS changes can cause startup failures and does not accept responsibility for BIOS changes. Microsoft likewise directs users to their device manufacturer for firmware-specific instructions. Enabling an option in firmware is not automatically risk-free, particularly when the Windows installation was originally configured for legacy BIOS mode.

What if Windows uses Legacy BIOS or an MBR disk?
Some older Windows installations use Legacy BIOS mode and an MBR-formatted system disk instead of UEFI and GPT. Simply switching the firmware from Legacy or CSM mode to UEFI can make such a system fail to start.
Microsoft provides MBR2GPT, a tool intended to convert eligible Windows system disks from MBR to GPT without deleting the existing data or reinstalling Windows. After a successful conversion, the firmware must be changed to boot in UEFI mode. The conversion has prerequisites and can fail if the disk layout or installation does not qualify.
MBR2GPT is therefore an official option, not an automatic recommendation for every Battlefield player. Back up the system first, read Microsoft’s current documentation carefully, and consider using the PC manufacturer’s support service or a qualified technician if the computer contains important data. A game launch requirement is not a good reason to take an unplanned risk with an otherwise working Windows installation.

| Check | What you want to see | If it is not correct |
|---|---|---|
| BIOS Mode | UEFI | Do not switch modes blindly; determine whether Windows is installed on GPT or MBR first. |
| Secure Boot State | On | Follow the exact motherboard or PC-maker instructions. |
| System disk | GPT | Research compatibility before considering MBR2GPT. |
| TPM | TPM 2.0 enabled | Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the system’s firmware controls. |
| Hardware support | Compatible PC hardware | Check the model’s specifications and EA’s support guidance; unsupported hardware may not be able to meet the requirement. |
Will enabling Secure Boot fix all Battlefield cheating?
No. EA presents Secure Boot as a way to strengthen defenses against cheats that attempt to load during Windows startup. It does not block every possible cheat, guarantee that all malicious software is detected, or replace EA anticheat.

Does this affect console players or other Battlefield games?
The documented change is for Battlefield 2042 on supported PC hardware. The supplied EA wording does not establish an identical Secure Boot rule for console players, every Battlefield title, or every older PC. Console firmware and operating systems also do not expose the same player-configurable Windows UEFI setup.
If Battlefield 2042 is working on a PC but the update reports that Secure Boot is required, use msinfo32 to check the configuration before making changes. If the machine cannot support UEFI, GPT, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot as required, upgrading hardware or seeking manufacturer support may be necessary; a generic accessory or software download will not reliably solve a firmware compatibility problem.
Frequently Asked Questions

EA’s requirement applies to supported PC hardware. It does not establish that every PC, console, or Battlefield game is subject to the same check.
How do I check whether Secure Boot is enabled?
Press Windows key + R, enter msinfo32, and press Enter. In System Information, check that BIOS Mode is UEFI and Secure Boot State is On.
Can I enable Secure Boot without changing anything else?
Sometimes, but not always. Systems installed in Legacy BIOS mode or on an MBR disk may require conversion and configuration changes before they can boot with UEFI and Secure Boot. Follow the exact instructions for the motherboard or PC model.
Is Secure Boot the same as EA anticheat or Riot Vanguard?
No. Secure Boot is a UEFI firmware security feature. EA anticheat and Riot Vanguard are separate anti-cheat software systems. Battlefield 2042 and VALORANT use Secure Boot in related ways, but their anti-cheat implementations are different.
The Bottom Line
Battlefield 2042’s May 27, 2025 update added a Secure Boot check for supported PCs as part of EA’s effort to counter boot-time cheat techniques. Check UEFI mode, Secure Boot, GPT, and TPM 2.0 first; then use your manufacturer’s documentation rather than applying generic BIOS instructions.
