Battlefield 6 custom maps are edits to existing maps made through Battlefield Portal—not, according to EA’s documented workflow, brand-new standalone maps built from scratch. To edit one, create a Portal Custom experience, use EA’s downloadable SDK in Godot, then import the exported spatial JSON into the experience’s map rotation. Players can find community experiences through the in-game Community section or EA’s Community Experience Library.
What “custom maps” means in Battlefield 6
Battlefield Portal lets players create custom experiences and modify existing game modes. For map editing, EA’s documented process is to work on an existing map using the Portal SDK and Godot, export the edited level, and import its spatial JSON into a Portal experience. The instructions reviewed do not describe a way to build a wholly new standalone map from scratch. See EA’s Portal guide.
Choose the right Portal creation path
| Option | What you can change | Setup and progression |
|---|---|---|
| Portal Custom | Start with an empty template and configure mode, teams, players, AI, modifiers, restrictions, map rotation, and rules. TypeScript can be used for custom rules and game logic; SDK/Godot is the route for spatial, map, and level edits. | Use the web builder for experience settings; map edits require the downloadable SDK and Godot. EA describes Custom experiences as offering Modified XP; check the current builder or game for the live policy. |
| Verified Modes | Start from a supported existing mode and adjust its available settings. Custom gameplay scripting and level edits are not available. | EA describes these as easier to create and says they offer full progression. Its launch-era guide names Conquest, Rush, and Breakthrough; check the live builder for the current mode list. |
The choice comes down to flexibility versus simplicity: use Portal Custom when you need a map edit or bespoke logic; choose a Verified Mode when its existing rules and settings are enough. EA’s Verified Modes guide explains the distinction. XP treatment and available modes can change, so confirm them in the current builder rather than assuming an older guide still matches the client.
How to edit an existing map
- Create a draft: On EA’s Portal website, create a Portal Custom experience and save it. Download the SDK if this is your first time using it. Follow EA’s Portal setup guide for the current setup instructions.
- Edit the map in Godot: Open the SDK project, complete its setup, and open a map scene. EA’s instructions describe adding, moving, or removing objects that already appear in the map.
- Export and import the edit: Save the scene under a new name and export the current level. Return to your Portal draft, modify the experience, open Map Rotation, and import the edited map’s spatial JSON. Save the experience.
- Test locally: In Battlefield 6, go to Portal → Browse Server → Locally Host, select the experience under My Experiences, then choose Host Locally. EA recommends this flow for testing map edits.
- Submit for publishing: Submit the experience when it is ready. EA says moderation is required and estimates review at around three hours; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed turnaround. Its guide describes statuses including Under Review, Action Needed, and Published (Live).
How to find and join community maps
Open the Community section in Battlefield 6 or search EA’s Community Experience Library. Search by a word or experience code, and use available tags, map, and mode filters. In the server browser, you can sort by player count, map, or ping and filter by region, maximum players, tags, and other criteria. If you have an exact experience code, enter it to find that experience.

Find a custom lobby
EA’s current help instructions give this path: Community → Browse Servers → Filters, then set Custom Lobby to Lobby Enabled. The help page documents Portal lobby support for Battle Royale (Quads) and Conquest. Because lobby support can change, check the in-game filters for current availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before you create or join
- For creators: Decide whether you need only the web builder’s experience settings or also map and level edits through the SDK/Godot. Verified Modes do not allow the documented custom scripting or level-edit workflow.
- For players: Compare the experience’s mode and map, server population, ping and region, and whether its current XP status suits you.
- For progression: Treat the Custom-versus-Verified XP distinction as subject to change and verify the current experience status in-game.
- For feature availability: An EA community update announced Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode for Season 4 Phase 2, initially for Battle Royale Quads and Conquest, with more modes planned; it also listed a separate Server Browser among Winter Season 5 plans. Those are announced plans, not confirmation here of subsequent deployment. Check EA’s community update and the live client for what is available now.
An older EA update said players would be expected to republish custom and verified experiences after a backend update so they could create active servers. That was historical maintenance guidance, not a general rule that every experience currently needs republishing. See the republishing update for its original context.
