Yes. According to EA’s official Battlefield 6 FAQ, the Steam version does not require the EA App to launch or play. However, Steam players must still create or use an EA account and link it to Steam.
That makes Steam the best PC storefront for players who want to avoid the EA launcher. It does not make Battlefield 6 independent of EA: account authentication, EA services, mandatory updates, and EA Javelin Anticheat still apply.
The short answer
If you buy Battlefield 6 on Steam, you can launch it without installing or running the EA App, based on EA’s current policy. You will still need:
- A Steam account and a Steam copy of the game
- An EA account
- A linked Steam–EA account relationship
- Internet access for authentication, updates, and online features
- EA Javelin Anticheat, which the Steam listing identifies as kernel-level anti-cheat
The important distinction is simple: Steam removes the EA App launcher requirement, not the EA account requirement.

What happens when you first launch?
- Install Battlefield 6 through Steam.
- Start the game from your Steam library.
- Sign in to an existing EA account or create one when prompted.
- Complete the Steam–EA account-linking process.
- Allow any required updates, authentication checks, and anti-cheat setup to finish.
EA may change the wording and appearance of these prompts, so every player may not see exactly the same screens. The first launch may involve an EA sign-in even though the EA App itself is not required.
Do you need an EA account?
Yes. EA says Steam players need an EA account, and Steam labels Battlefield 6 as requiring third-party EA account linking. The account handles identity, entitlement validation, and progression-related services; the EA App is a separate PC launcher and storefront.
EA’s access guide warns players to use the correct existing EA account because progression is associated with that account. If you have more than one EA account, identify the one you actually use before linking Steam. Do not casually unlink and relink accounts as a troubleshooting step without checking EA’s current rules.

The Epic Games Store listing explicitly requires the EA App to be installed and running in the background. The no-EA-App exception therefore applies to Steam, not to every PC version.

What if Steam still shows an EA-related prompt?
An EA sign-in or account-linking prompt is expected. If Steam appears to require the EA App, first check the following:
- Whether you are signing in to the correct EA account
- Whether Steam ownership has been recognized
- Whether Steam and the game are fully updated
- Whether an authentication or entitlement check is failing
- Whether anti-cheat setup or another required component is being installed
Restart Steam and verify the account-linking status before concluding that EA has changed the Steam policy. The presence of the EA App on your PC also does not prove that Battlefield 6 requires it; you may already have it for another EA game.
Steam features and remaining EA dependencies
The Steam listing advertises Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, cross-platform multiplayer, online PvP, and in-app purchases. It also confirms EA account linking and EA Javelin Anticheat.
These features illustrate why “no EA App” does not mean “EA-free.” Steam can manage the installation, launch shortcut, achievements, and cloud features while EA still provides account and online-service infrastructure. Expect internet access for account linking, authentication, updates, and online play. Do not interpret the launcher exemption as a guarantee of fully offline play.

Does a purchase transfer between Steam, Epic, and EA?
No automatic cross-store license should be assumed. Steam, Epic, and the EA App are separate purchase channels. A shared EA account can connect services, but it does not automatically turn an EA App or Epic purchase into a Steam license, or merge separate storefront ownership records.
EA lists Steam, the EA App, and Epic as separate buying destinations on its official purchase page. Subscription access is also separate from Steam ownership: EA Play Pro access does not automatically provide a Steam copy.

Choose Steam if avoiding the EA App is your priority, or if you want Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, and a Steam purchase record. You must still accept EA account linking and EA’s online services.
Choose the EA App if you already use EA Play Pro or prefer EA’s direct PC ecosystem. This is the wrong choice if your main goal is to avoid the EA launcher.

Choose Epic only if you have a specific Epic-related reason and accept that the EA App must also be installed and used. It does not provide the Steam version’s launcher arrangement.
EA’s launch announcement listed U.S. launch prices of $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Phantom Edition in 2025. Those are historical launch prices, not a guarantee of current regional pricing or an active discount. The game released on October 10, 2025.
Bottom line
For PC players who want to avoid the EA App, buy Battlefield 6 on Steam. EA’s current FAQ says the Steam version does not require the EA App to play. Just remember that an EA account, Steam linking, internet-based authentication, and EA Javelin Anticheat remain part of the experience. If you buy through Epic, the EA App is still required.
