Battlefield 6’s multiplayer modes differ most in how teams win: Conquest rewards controlling territory across a broad battlefield, Rush and Breakthrough give attackers and defenders opposing jobs, and tactical modes focus on close-quarters objectives or kills. The best fit depends on whether you want vehicles and room to maneuver, a defined front line, or infantry-focused fights. The guide below covers the core modes EA explains; seasonal and Portal availability can change.
All-Out Warfare modes
EA groups Conquest, Rush, Breakthrough, and Escalation under All-Out Warfare. These modes emphasize territory, large engagements, or a structured push rather than simply accumulating kills. EA’s mode guide describes their rules.
Conquest: broad territory battles with vehicles
Teams capture and hold multiple objectives across the map. Conquest is the broadest territory-and-vehicle experience in EA’s guide: tanks, jets, and attack helicopters can shape fights, and players may move between objectives rather than stay on one front. Teams must manage both lives and vehicles; reviving teammates helps conserve lives. Choose it if you want large-scale battles, multiple routes between objectives, and vehicles as part of the fight.
Rush: a focused M-COM attack and defense
Rush is an asymmetric, medium-sized mode. Attackers plant explosives at M-COM communication systems and push through sectors; defenders try to defuse them. Attackers have limited lives, while defenders have unlimited lives but a longer respawn delay. EA says a match defaults to one round, so you ordinarily play either attack or defense in that match—not both.

Breakthrough: advance through defended sectors
Breakthrough is an asymmetric, large-team mode combining infantry and vehicles. Attackers must capture every control point in a sector at the same time to advance. Their lives reset when they take a sector; defenders have unlimited lives and try to stop the advance. The match ends when attackers capture every sector or run out of lives. Pick it for a more concentrated front-line push than Conquest, with progress measured sector by sector.
Escalation: territory fights that narrow over time
Two teams contest strategic control points. As territory expands, fewer points remain available, concentrating combat on a smaller number of locations before a final contest. Escalation suits players who like territorial objectives but want the fight to become more focused as the match develops.
Tactical modes for close-quarters play
EA’s mode guide also describes four tactical modes that trade the broad scale of All-Out Warfare for infantry-focused or close-quarters combat.
Squad Deathmatch
Four squads compete; the first squad to reach the kill target wins. Choose this for kill-focused play with squad competition rather than territory capture.

Team Deathmatch
Teams fight in infantry-focused combat, and the team with the most kills wins. There is no territory objective to capture.
Domination
Domination is infantry-only close-quarters territory control. Capture and hold objectives to reach the point limit. It keeps objective play while bringing the fighting into a tighter space.
King of the Hill
Teams contest a control point that moves. Holding the active point takes coordination, so this is a close-quarters objective option for players who want to fight over one changing focal point rather than a broad map of flags.
How to choose a mode
| Mode | What you are trying to do | Team structure | Scale and combat feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conquest | Capture and hold multiple objectives | Teams contest territory | Broad battlefield; vehicles such as tanks, jets, and attack helicopters feature in EA’s description |
| Rush | Attackers plant explosives at M-COMs; defenders defuse them | Asymmetric attack and defense | Medium-sized, sector-based push; attackers have limited lives |
| Breakthrough | Attackers capture all points in each sector to advance | Asymmetric attack and defense | Large-team front line with infantry and vehicles |
| Escalation | Contest strategic control points as available territory contracts | Two teams contest objectives | Territorial combat that concentrates on fewer points over time |
| Squad Deathmatch | Reach the kill target first | Four competing squads | Kill-focused tactical combat |
| Team Deathmatch | Finish with the most kills | Two teams | Infantry-focused combat |
| Domination | Capture and hold objectives to reach the point limit | Teams contest territory | Infantry-only, close-quarters combat |
| King of the Hill | Control a point that moves | Teams contest one focal objective | Close-quarters, cooperation-oriented combat |

- Choose Rush for a focused demolition objective with distinct attacker and defender roles.
- Choose Breakthrough for a sustained attack along sequential sectors.
- Choose Escalation for territory control that narrows toward a concentrated fight.
- Choose Team Deathmatch or Squad Deathmatch if you want kills, not capture objectives, to decide the winner.
- Choose Domination or King of the Hill for close-quarters objective play.
EA does not provide a mode-by-mode player-count comparison or popularity ranking in its mode guide, so these descriptions are not a numerical ranking of scale or activity.

What new players should know
EA’s beginner guide recommends prioritizing objectives, reviving teammates, and adjusting sensitivity and keybinds to suit your preferences. If a mode is not enjoyable, try another; Battlefield’s modes reward different styles of play.
Battlefield 6 has four classes: Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon, each with default loadouts and signature equipment. Every class can revive squadmates, while Support can revive any teammate and carries a Defibrillator. Revives matter beyond support play: in modes where lives are limited, keeping teammates in the fight can preserve the team’s resources.
EA’s launch-era beginner guide also described Initiation Breakthrough, where teams were partially filled by bots to help new or low-rank players learn. That is a dated description, not confirmation that the playlist is currently available or that its eligibility rules remain unchanged.
Mode rules stay useful; playlist availability changes
EA’s mode guide explains the core rules, but the modes available in a particular playlist can change with seasons and Portal updates. EA’s September 2, 2026 Tidal Strike update discussed Breakthrough balance on Tsuru Reef and said King of the Hill and Domination were being added as Portal Verified Modes. EA’s September 14, 2026 seasonal update said Carrier Strike and Fighter Sweep had been extended through Season 4. Those announcements describe dated additions and extensions; they do not establish that every mode is in every playlist now.
For the options currently open to you, check the in-game playlist menu or EA’s latest updates. EA’s October 2025 community update described dedicated and combined playlists, Custom Search, a Server Browser, and Portal, but it is launch-era information rather than a current menu-by-menu walkthrough.
