Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Is It “Shōgun the Video Game”?

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set in late Sengoku Japan and pairs stealth-focused shinobi Naoe with combat-oriented samurai Yasuke. Here’s what the “Shōgun the video game” comparison can—and can’t—mean.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is an open-world action-adventure set in late Sengoku Japan, but calling it “Shōgun the video game” is a comparison, not an official connection: Ubisoft’s materials do not identify the game as an adaptation or tie-in to the television series. Its defining idea is instead a choice between two protagonists with sharply different approaches—Naoe, a shinobi built around stealth, and Yasuke, an armored samurai focused on combat.

This is a grounded look at what the game is and how its premise compares with the hook in the title, not a firsthand review. No independent play assessment or review consensus is established here, so claims about how well the mechanics perform or whether the game is fun should not be mistaken for tested verdicts.

What is Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Ubisoft describes Assassin’s Creed Shadows as an open-world adventure in feudal Japan, set during the turbulent late Sengoku period. The game follows two protagonists: Naoe, a shinobi assassin from Iga Province, and Yasuke, a samurai character based on the historical figure. Ubisoft’s current game page lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows PC, Apple-silicon Mac, Amazon Luna, and Ubisoft+ among its availability options; access may vary by region and service.

Ubisoft’s store listing names Ubisoft Quebec as developer, Ubisoft as publisher, and March 20, 2025 as the release date. It classifies the game as Action/Adventure and Open World. For PC purchases through that Ubisoft Store listing, an Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect application are required for activation. Check the relevant platform’s storefront for its own requirements and availability.

Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows like Shōgun?

Only in the broad sense that both invite an audience into a dramatized version of Japan’s past. Ubisoft’s official materials describe Shadows as a game set in the late Sengoku period, but do not identify it as an adaptation, licensed companion, or official tie-in to the television series Shōgun. The title’s comparison is best read as a framing device, not a statement of shared rights, story, or characters.

The medium also makes for a meaningful distinction: Shadows is built around player-controlled exploration, stealth, and combat, while a television series tells its story through scripted scenes. A closer comparison of tone, historical interpretation, political conflict, or social hierarchy would need to be made on its own evidence; the official game descriptions alone do not establish that the two works match on those points.

How do Naoe and Yasuke play differently?

Ubisoft presents the pair as complementary options rather than two versions of the same character. Its game page says they have separate progression, stats, skills, and gear, and that players can approach quests with either character. The practical distinction is between Naoe’s stealth-oriented toolkit and Yasuke’s combat-focused approach.

Protagonist Officially described focus Examples Ubisoft gives
Naoe Shinobi stealth, parkour, and gadgets Going prone, extinguishing lights, using a grappling hook, and exploiting shadows
Yasuke Armored, combat-oriented samurai Destructible armor and posture attacks in combat

These are publisher-described features, not independent findings about responsiveness, balance, or combat depth. Ubisoft’s combat and stealth overview provides the examples, while the game page describes the protagonists’ separate progression and quest choice.

How do seasons and weather affect the world?

Ubisoft says that seasons, weather, light, and shadow influence the world and the opportunities available for stealth. Its examples describe rain muffling Naoe’s sounds, winter freezing ponds and removing leafy cover, and snow making footprints visible. These are advertised mechanics; the available descriptions do not establish how consistently they operate in play or how much they change a particular encounter.

That design premise ties the setting to the player’s decisions: a route or hiding place may matter differently as conditions change. Whether those systems create meaningful variety is a question for hands-on play, not something the publisher’s feature descriptions alone can settle. The examples are outlined in Ubisoft’s gameplay overview.

How much of the story is historical?

Ubisoft says the development team consulted historical documentation and worked with historians, professors, and cultural consultants, and that the team traveled to Japan. That is Ubisoft’s account of its process, not an independent audit of the game’s historical accuracy.

Yasuke is based on a real historical figure, but Ubisoft also says the game develops and expands his established historical story. The distinction matters: Yasuke’s historical life and the game’s fictional plot are not interchangeable, and Ubisoft’s own article notes open questions and speculation about his life. Treat specific narrative events as part of the game unless they are independently substantiated as history. Ubisoft’s discussion of its approach and Yasuke’s historical framing is in its launch article.

What official companion and collector options are listed?

Ubisoft promotes Piggyback’s Complete Official Guide as a companion and says it comes in two editions. Current edition details and stock can change, so check the linked game page for what is listed before buying.

Ubisoft’s Collector’s Edition page lists the following contents:

  • A statue
  • A SteelBook
  • A 76-page art book
  • A world map
  • A wall scroll
  • A katana tsuba
  • Two lithographs

The same page lists the statue at 40 cm and describes quantities as limited; it does not state a publication year for those figures. Availability is time-sensitive. See Ubisoft’s Collector’s Edition page for its current listing.
