Brasil Game Show (BGS) marked its 15th year in 2024. In an anniversary retrospective published on June 6, 2024, the organizer highlighted 15 milestones, from the fair’s growth from a one-day event in Rio de Janeiro to its later years in São Paulo, to its game previews, esports competitions, cosplay, indie showcase and charitable programs. The cumulative figures below are those reported by BGS, not independently audited totals.
What are the 15 facts about BGS’s 15-year history?
The following points reproduce the 15 topics in BGS’s anniversary retrospective. Counts are attributed to the organizer and reflect the periods specified in its release.
- Attendance: BGS reported 2,829,388 visitors across the 15-year period covered by its June 2024 release.
- Exhibition space and venues: The organizer reported 789,000 square metres of cumulative exhibition area since 2009. The fair was held at four venues, remained in Rio de Janeiro through 2011, and moved to São Paulo in 2012. By 2024, Expo Center Norte had hosted BGS nine times.
- Participating companies: More than 2,700 companies had appeared at the fair, according to BGS. The release names publishers and game companies such as Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, Sega, Ubisoft, Activision, Epic, EA, Capcom and Bandai Namco; hardware brands including Samsung, Dell, AMD, Razer, Logitech, NVIDIA, Corsair and Intel; as well as esports organizations, video platforms and Brazilian studios.
- Days of programming: The first Rio Game Show in 2009 lasted one day; a second edition that year ran for two days. By 2024 the fair usually lasted five days. BGS says its post-pandemic 2022 edition ran for a full week, and that all editions together amounted to 61 event days.
- International guests: More than 100 international guests had participated by BGS 2023, including developers, designers, actors and executives. The retrospective also notes that Ralph Baer joined a 2009 panel remotely.
- Games shown before release: Across 14 editions, visitors had the chance to play 172 games in Brazil before their official releases, BGS reported. Examples include Super Mario Bros. Wonder at BGS 2023, Street Fighter 6 (2022), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2019), Days Gone and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2018), and Assassin’s Creed Origins (2017). BGS also highlighted early showings of Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PlayStation VR.
- Press coverage: BGS reported that 28,217 journalists had received credentials to cover the event since 2009.
- Creators: The fair introduced creator credentials in 2012. About 16,600 creators had attended with VIP credentials offered by BGS, according to the release.

- Esports: BGS held its first official tournament in 2014 under the name Brasil Game Cup; the attraction became BGS Esports in 2019. The retrospective counts 55 official competitions, featuring games including CS:GO, Free Fire, Valorant and Crossfire.
- Independent games: The Avenida Indie showcase had hosted 378 independent studios, mostly Brazilian, according to BGS.
- Staff inclusion and nonprofit participation: BGS said 352 people with disabilities had worked on production and visitor-service teams since 2012. The release also names nonprofits that had appeared at the fair, including Casa de David, AACD, APAE and CDI.
- Food donations: The organizer said its half-price ticket donation practice had helped collect more than 547 tonnes of nonperishable food across 13 editions. The donations supported organizations including Casa Ronald McDonald, Casa de David and Médicos Sem Fronteira.
- Gaming-history collection: BGS founder and CEO Marcelo Tavares had a collection of more than 3,000 game-related items, according to the release. More than 1,120 items from it had been displayed across ten of the 14 completed editions covered.
- BGS Store: The store debuted in 2011. BGS said it had created and sold more than 520 different products; over 13,300 items were sold during the five days of the 2023 event.
How the fair changed from Rio to São Paulo
The anniversary figures describe a shift in both scale and format. BGS began in Rio de Janeiro in 2009 as a one-day event, then moved to São Paulo in 2012. In the organizer’s account, the fair’s typical run had reached five days by 2024, with Expo Center Norte hosting it nine times by that year. The 61 cumulative days and 789,000 square metres of exhibition space are totals published by BGS for its retrospective, rather than independently verified measurements.
What the milestones say about BGS beyond game demos
Pre-release access is only one strand of the retrospective. The figures also track the people and activities around the show: international guests, press and creators, cosplay competitors, esports tournaments and independent studios. The inclusion, nonprofit and food-donation points document further parts of the event’s public programming as described by its organizer.

The detailed first fact in the anniversary retrospective gives the cumulative attendance as 2,829,388 visitors. A separate boilerplate paragraph near the end of the same release instead claims more than 500 million visitors, a figure that conflicts sharply with the detailed retrospective. Terra’s June 6, 2024 article also describes the total as about 2.8 million. This article uses the detailed figure and attributes it to BGS rather than presenting it as an independently audited count.
