Battlefield REDSEC is a free-to-play, standalone Battlefield experience, so you do not need to own Battlefield 6. Its core options include Battle Royale, custom experiences in Portal, and the round-based Gauntlet mode—but playlists rotate, and EA has announced that Gauntlet will leave the active lineup with Season 5. Check the in-game playlist before expecting to queue for any particular mode.
What is Battlefield REDSEC?
REDSEC is a free-to-play Battlefield experience set on Fort Lyndon. EA’s launch announcement presented three ways to play: Battle Royale, Gauntlet, and Portal. Battlefield 6 ownership is not required. Progression is unified between REDSEC and Battlefield 6, though some challenges are specific to one title; the Battle Pass is shared. EA’s launch overview and its REDSEC FAQ describe the relationship between the games.

Fort Lyndon combines urban areas, military compounds, and suburban neighborhoods. In Battle Royale, destruction and vehicles are part of the map strategy: players can breach walls, bring down buildings, use rubble for cover, and travel by land, water, or air. These are launch-era descriptions; exact map spaces and vehicle availability can change with updates.

How do you play Battle Royale?
Join a squad and choose your starting setup
At launch, EA described Battle Royale as a 100-player match: either 25 four-player squads or 50 duos. After joining a match and before leaving the infiltration plane, players choose a class, sidearm, and melee tool, according to EA’s Battle Royale 101 guide. The 100-player format is the launch description, not a guarantee that every live playlist uses that exact setup.

Use class abilities and develop your Training Path
Each class has gadgets, a signature weapon proficiency, a signature trait, and a Training Path. Eliminations, Contracts, and surviving deeper into the match earn score that unlocks additional passive abilities during the match. Your class therefore shapes both your initial toolkit and the abilities you can build toward as the match unfolds.
Learn the basics before dropping in
EA’s beginner guide recommends adjusting sensitivity and controls before a match, practicing in the Firing Range, and staying close enough to squadmates to help one another. It also describes Battle Royale Initiation as a newer-player option on a reduced southeast area of Fort Lyndon, with a 48-player cap including bots. That guidance dates to October 2025, so check the live playlist before relying on Initiation being available.
What is Gauntlet, and can you still play it?
Gauntlet is a team objective mode rather than a long-form survival match. EA’s FAQ describes eight teams of four competing in rounds, each with a five-minute window to complete its mission. Older beginner guidance recommends paying attention to each round’s briefing, prioritizing the scoring objective, and communicating with teammates.

Availability is the key caveat: EA’s Season 5 preview says, “With Season 5, we’re prioritizing Rapid Royale Solos and will be removing Gauntlet from the active playlist lineup.” EA also left open the possibility of Gauntlet returning and said it would monitor player engagement. This is an announced season change, not confirmation of the playlist visible in your game now. Check the current in-game playlist to see whether Gauntlet is queueable.
How does Rapid Royale differ from standard Battle Royale?
EA describes Rapid Royale as a condensed, faster-paced Battle Royale experience with shorter matches and more frequent engagements. Its Season 5 preview announces Rapid Royale Solos and Trios. The update says Battle Royale Duos is planned to return later in Season 5 and describes a possible rotation between Rapid Royale Solos and Battle Royale Duos, while noting that matchmaking data will inform the final plan. Treat these as announced plans, not a promise about today’s queue options; verify the live playlist in-game.
What is Portal in REDSEC?
Portal is REDSEC’s space for discovering and creating custom experiences. EA’s launch announcement describes a builder and spatial editor, configurable settings such as player counts and weapon or vehicle pools, and Fort Lyndon playspaces. EA’s later preview says Portal continues to receive maps and environments. The launch post’s count of available playspaces was specific to launch, not a current inventory. Browse the current Portal listings and creator tools to see what you can use now.

What is changing in Season 5?
In its Season 5 preview, EA announced updates to class Training Paths, armor plating that will be 20% faster across classes, and additional gadgets in the loot pool. These are previewed changes; whether they have taken effect depends on the live patch. EA’s Season 5 update also outlines the playlist plans described above.

For a new player, the practical approach is to choose from what’s actually listed in-game, learn squad play and class abilities in a Battle Royale option that suits your pace, and use Portal if you would rather explore custom formats. REDSEC is free to play on its own; optional premium Battle Pass tiers offer cosmetics shared with Battlefield 6.
