For a first flight, try assist, use small inputs, and learn to balance throttle, nose position, and direction before pushing for speed.
How to get into a helicopter
Enter a helicopter when you are close enough to an available seat, or deploy into one where the map allows it. The aircraft must have an unoccupied seat or room. Once aboard, check your in-game Controls menu: EA’s default bindings can be changed, and the displayed controls may differ if you use a custom layout.

Choose a control scheme

Assist is a helicopter-specific setting, separate from airplane assist. To try it, open Gameplay > Vehicles and switch on Helicopter Control Assist. With assist enabled, EA lists directional keys or sticks for simplified movement, and mouse movement can also steer in the indicated directions. Verify the current prompts in your settings, especially if you have changed bindings.

Standard helicopter controls
EA’s default aircraft mapping is below. These are defaults, not fixed requirements; check your own Controls menu if a key or button does not match.

Pitching the nose down loses height, so you may need to compensate with throttle. EA’s recommended baseline lists helicopter control sensitivity at 100, but sensitivity is a personal preference: adjust it in vehicle settings if the response feels too sharp or too slow.
Learn to stay in control
- Start with assist if the full scheme feels overwhelming. Enable it under Gameplay > Vehicles and use camera direction to guide the helicopter.
- Use short, deliberate inputs. While learning, focus on how throttle and nose position affect movement rather than making large corrections. This is a practical way to apply EA’s advice to manage the aircraft’s nose position, throttle, and intended movement.
- Keep the aircraft level as you learn. Watch your speed and avoid accelerating until you are comfortable correcting direction. EA cautions that “The faster you fly, the harder it gets to control your aircraft.”
- Change bindings only when you know what you want to change. Review the helicopter controls and sensitivity in vehicle settings, then adjust as needed.
Assist simplifies steering, but EA does not say that it automatically holds a particular altitude or guarantees a steady hover.

Use the helicopter’s role
EA describes helicopters as aerial support for attacking infantry and vehicles, moving troops quickly, and supplying a squad. Attack helicopters have two seats; transport helicopters have five, including a gunner seat with miniguns. Once you are comfortable flying, choose your actions around the aircraft and available seats rather than treating every helicopter as having the same loadout.

Pay attention to the aircraft’s lock warning, which progresses through “Locking,” “Locked,” and “Incoming.” EA’s general aircraft guidance is to avoid flying in a straight line, use terrain for cover, and save flares for incoming missiles instead of deploying them too early. Flying low can make lock-on harder, but it also increases collision and other attack risks; no maneuver guarantees that you will evade every missile. Repair after taking damage when you have the opportunity.

Use an available helicopter in a match or deploy into one on a map that permits it, then spend the first minutes learning steering and throttle before taking on combat.
