You do not need to own Battlefield 6 to play. Its launch offerings were Battle Royale, the squad-elimination mode Gauntlet and Portal creation tools, all centered on Fort Lyndon. EA’s current store listing still labels REDSEC free to play; mode details below describe the launch design, which may have changed since release.
What is Battlefield REDSEC?
REDSEC is a separate free-to-play experience in the Battlefield universe, rather than a mode that requires buying Battlefield 6. EA said players could enter REDSEC without owning the paid game, and its current store listing shows a price of USD 0.00. An EA account and persistent internet connection are required; a platform subscription may also be required, depending on where you play. EA’s launch announcement and current store listing provide those access details.
REDSEC launched on October 28, 2025, alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1. The launch announcement described three pillars: Battle Royale, Gauntlet and Portal. Battlefield 6 is an optional paid purchase, not a prerequisite for REDSEC.
What modes and tools launched with REDSEC?
Battle Royale: up to 100 players
EA’s launch format allowed up to 100 players per match, arranged as either 25 squads of four or 50 duos. The mode adapted Battlefield’s class system with class traits and training paths. EA also described missions and hidden intel caches as ways to advance those paths and earn rewards.

These are launch-era descriptions, not a guarantee that every mechanic or vehicle remains unchanged in the live service. EA’s REDSEC launch briefing outlines the format and mechanics.
Gauntlet: score through four missions to survive
At launch, Gauntlet put eight four-person squads through four randomized missions on Fort Lyndon. Teams earned score through objectives, kills and support. After missions, lower-scoring squads were eliminated until the remaining teams faced off in a final mission.

EA’s launch article and its Season 1 mission briefing describe the launch structure.
Portal: build or play custom experiences
Portal gave players tools to create and play custom experiences using REDSEC elements. EA described controls for player counts, weapons and vehicles, gameplay settings, and a spatial editor. Fort Lyndon was divided into six Portal-ready playspaces in the launch materials.

Where is Fort Lyndon?
Fort Lyndon, REDSEC’s launch map, is a fictional Southern California coastal setting combining beaches, urban areas, suburbs and military blacksite facilities. EA’s Season 1 briefing identified nine major points of interest and 16 additional points of interest; those are EA’s launch-era location counts, not independent measurements of the map. That is the base game’s platform list; it does not, by itself, establish REDSEC-specific availability on every one of those platforms. EA’s launch announcement also notes account, connection and possible subscription requirements.
How REDSEC relates to Battlefield 6
REDSEC arrived alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1, but the two are not the same purchase: REDSEC is free to play, while Battlefield 6 is the optional paid base game. EA’s General Manager of Battlefield, Byron Beede, described REDSEC as bringing Battle Royale, Gauntlet and new ways to build and experience Portal to the franchise in the October 28, 2025 launch announcement.
