Battlefield REDSEC launched on October 28, 2025, as a free-to-play Battlefield experience, and a headline the following day said it had “Mostly Negative” Steam reviews. That wording records a launch-era claim; it does not establish REDSEC’s exact Steam rating or review count on launch day. A later Steam snapshot showed a different, time-bounded measure and should not be mistaken for the launch score.
What the “Mostly Negative” launch claim establishes
A Reddit post dated October 29, 2025, used the headline “Battlefield REDSEC Launches To ‘Mostly Negative’ Reviews On Steam.” It establishes that the phrase circulated in coverage immediately after launch, but the post result does not provide an authoritative launch-day review count or a complete record of Steam’s rating at that time. The dated post is evidence of the wording, not a review-history archive.
A Steam listing surfaced later showed “Mostly Negative” recent reviews, with 39% positive among 144 reviews over the last 30 days in a snapshot surfaced in 2026. That is a rolling recent-review figure, not REDSEC’s verified launch-day rating. Steam review counts and labels change over time. Steam’s REDSEC listing can show the current storefront result, but it does not by itself reconstruct the launch-day score.
What REDSEC included at launch
Electronic Arts announced REDSEC on October 28, 2025, alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1. EA presented it as a free-to-play experience with Battle Royale, Gauntlet, and Portal, set in Fort Lyndon, a destructible California environment. Gauntlet
Gauntlet pits eight four-player teams against one another in changing mission rounds. Teams have five-minute windows to complete objectives, with the mission format making squad performance—not simply survival—the focus. EA’s description of Gauntlet sets out those team and timing details.

Free-to-play access does not mean every shared progression or cosmetic item is free. EA says the premium Battle Pass and its unlocks are shared between REDSEC and Battlefield 6. The shared system connects the two experiences, while the premium tier remains a paid offering. EA’s FAQ describes the relationship.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why were players upset around launch?
REDSEC’s reception overlapped with complaints about Battlefield 6 Season 1. In its October 29, 2025 coverage, PC Gamer reported backlash over a pop-up battle-pass promotion, the Blackwell Fields map, and weekly challenges tied to Battle Royale.

- BATTLEFIELD COINS CURRENCY — Use Battlefield Coins as in‑game currency to unlock a wide range of optional content through the in‑game Store.
- COSMETIC CUSTOMIZATION — Spend Battlefield Coins on Soldiers, Weapon Packages, Vehicle Skins, and cosmetic accessories to personalize your battlefield experience.
- BOOSTERS AND EXTRAS — Purchase gameplay boosters and additional cosmetic items to enhance progression and visual style without impacting core balance.
- BATTLE PASS ACCESS — Battlefield Coins can be used to purchase the Battle Pass, unlocking seasonal rewards, cosmetics, and progression content.
That reporting shows that some launch-era discussion concerned the wider paid Battlefield 6 experience and its seasonal rollout, not only REDSEC’s standalone gameplay. It does not quantify how many REDSEC reviews reflected those complaints or establish the motive behind any individual review. The available evidence therefore supports noting the overlap, not assigning all negative sentiment to one cause.
