It controls the listening port, network binding, public or private visibility, authentication, server-list text, map, resource directory, player and vehicle limits, and diagnostic logging. BeamMP-Server creates the file on its first startup; edit that generated copy, then restart the process for changes to be read.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted BeamNG.drive servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The most important detail is location: the configuration, logs, and Resources directory are created relative to the server process’s working directory. A file beside the executable may be ignored if a service, container, shortcut, or script starts BeamMP-Server elsewhere.

The file uses TOML syntax and normally contains a single [General] section. Text values must be quoted. The comments in the file generated by your installed BeamMP-Server version are the most current explanation of its options, so keep that template available when upgrading.
Do one initial launch before making a large configuration. The first run creates the current file structure, log location, and resource folder. Stop the server, edit the generated file, and start it again. If your server is managed by a system service or container, identify its working directory first; otherwise you can spend time changing a configuration that the running process never opens.

Settings at a glance
| Setting | What it controls | Important limits or cautions |
|---|---|---|
Port |
TCP/UDP network port on which the server is reachable. | Use an unused port from 1024 through 65535. Router forwarding and firewall rules must use the same value. |
IP |
Local address to which BeamMP-Server binds. | The official example uses ::. Keep the generated value unless you have a specific multi-interface or IPv6 requirement. |
AuthKey |
Authentication key used to identify a public server with the BeamMP backend. | Treat it as a secret. Do not publish it in repositories, screenshots, support posts, or copied logs. |
Private |
Whether the server is hidden from the public server list. | true keeps it out of the list. Use false only when you intend to list it and have valid authentication configured. |
Name |
The server name displayed to players. | BeamMP’s documented maximum is 250 characters. |
Tags |
Search and classification text shown with the server. | Use concise comma-separated terms that describe the actual server. |
Description |
Longer server-list information. | BeamMP’s documented maximum is 1,000 characters. |
MaxPlayers |
Maximum simultaneous players. | No universal performance value is established in the official documentation; hardware, map, mods, and network conditions determine a practical limit. |
MaxCars |
Maximum vehicles each player may have spawned. | Extra vehicles a player attempts to spawn are deleted immediately. |
Map |
Initial map path loaded by the server. | Use a valid installed path, such as /levels/gridmap_v2/info.json. A custom map must be installed as a server resource. |
ResourceFolder |
Directory containing server resources and custom content. | It may be a separate valid path. Ensure the process can read it. |
LogChat |
Whether chat activity is written to logs. | Useful for a specific moderation or troubleshooting need; disable noisy logging for routine operation if you do not need it. |
Debug |
Additional diagnostic logging. | Enable temporarily while investigating a problem, then return to the normal setting. |
InformationPacket |
An operational information switch shown in the official setup example. | Keep the generated value unless you have a reason to change it and understand the installed version’s comment. |
AllowGuests |
A guest-access option present in the generated setup example. | The safe example uses false. Follow the comment in your generated file because behavior and wording are version-specific. |
A safe starting configuration
This example follows the official setup structure. Replace the authentication key, identity text, map, and capacity with values appropriate for your installation.

Keep the [General] header. TOML is strict about spelling, equal signs, quotation marks, and value types: true and false are booleans, while names, paths, tags, and keys are quoted strings. A malformed line can prevent the server from loading the intended settings, so change one logical group at a time and check the startup log after each restart.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow to configure a server step by step
- Run BeamMP-Server once. Start it from the directory where you intend to operate it. Allow the first launch to create
ServerConfig.toml, logs, and the resource directory, then stop the process cleanly. - Open the generated file. Confirm that it is the copy in the process’s working directory, not merely a copy next to the executable. If you use a service, inspect its configured working directory; if you use a container, check the mounted path.
- Choose an unused port. Select a value from 1024–65535 and verify that no other service on the host already occupies it. The example value
30814is not a universal requirement. - Set identity and access. Enter a descriptive
Name, usefulTags, and aDescription. KeepPrivate = truewhile testing or when you want direct-connect access only. Add the validAuthKeyrequired for a public listing before switching toPrivate = false. - Set map and resources. Point
Mapto an installed map’sinfo.json. Put custom content in the configured resource directory and verify its path and spelling. A path that is valid on your development machine may not exist on the host. - Set capacity conservatively. Use
MaxPlayersfor the player ceiling andMaxCarsfor each player’s vehicle ceiling. Begin with values your hardware can sustain, then observe server logs, simulation stability, and player experience before increasing them. - Save and restart. BeamMP-Server rereads the configuration at startup. A running process generally continues using the values loaded during its previous launch.
- Test locally, then externally. Connect from the host or local network first. After networking rules are in place, test from outside the host’s network so you can distinguish a configuration error from a router or firewall problem.
Port forwarding and firewall requirements
A correct TOML file cannot make an unreachable port work. The same port must be free on the host, forwarded by the router when the host is behind a private network, and permitted through the host firewall.

- Choose the
Portvalue inServerConfig.tomland record it. - Create a router port-forwarding rule from that external port to the BeamMP host’s internal address. Use the same port number and the protocol coverage required by the official setup guide.
- Allow BeamMP-Server through the host firewall for incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP on that port. A rule for only one protocol can produce partial or inconsistent connectivity.
- Keep the host’s local address stable, for example with a DHCP reservation, so the router rule does not silently point to another device.
- Have a player outside your home network test the connection. Local testing alone can succeed even when inbound traffic from the internet is blocked.
For an intentionally private server, leave Private = true and give trusted players the host address and port through Direct Connect. A private server is not supposed to appear in the public list. For a listed server, set Private = false, use a valid AuthKey, and confirm that forwarding and firewall rules are complete.
Why a server is missing from the server list
Private mode is still enabled
Private = true explicitly suppresses listing. This is the first setting to check when players can connect directly but cannot find the server in the browser.
Public authentication is incomplete
A public server needs a valid AuthKey so the BeamMP backend can identify it. Check for extra spaces, missing quotation marks, a key copied into the wrong working directory, or a service that starts with a different configuration path. Never post the key while asking for help; redact it before sharing logs or screenshots.

The process is using another file
Launch location controls where the configuration and logs are created. Compare the timestamp and contents of the file you edited with the file path used by the service, script, shortcut, or container. Restart only after confirming you changed the active copy.
Networking is blocked
Listing and direct connectivity can both be affected by a conflicting port, missing router forwarding, or a firewall rule that omits TCP or UDP. Check all three layers with the exact value configured under Port.
Maps, resources, and capacity limits
Map paths
The Map value must identify content installed on the server, not merely content installed in a player’s game directory. A standard-style value is /levels/gridmap_v2/info.json. For a custom map, install it as a server resource, then use the path exposed by that resource and confirm the startup log reports successful loading.

ResourceFolder
ResourceFolder defaults to the relative Resources location in the setup example, but it can be a separate valid path. Relative paths depend on the working directory; absolute paths reduce ambiguity when a service starts from an unexpected directory. Ensure the BeamMP process account has permission to read the directory.

MaxPlayers and MaxCars
MaxPlayers limits connected players. MaxCars applies per player, not to the entire server: when a player tries to exceed the limit, the additional cars are deleted immediately. There is no official universal player-or-car number that guarantees smooth performance. Tune in stages for your CPU, memory, map complexity, modifications, and upload capacity, and watch for simulation stalls or unstable connections.
Environment-variable overrides
Since server release 3.2.0, General settings can be overridden with environment variables. Convert the PascalCase setting name to uppercase words separated by underscores and prepend BEAMMP_.

BEAMMP_MAX_PLAYERS |
Supply the number as a string in the process environment. |
Name |
BEAMMP_NAME |
Supply the text as a string; preserve spaces according to your shell or service syntax. |

true or 1 turns it on; other values are interpreted as off. |
This is useful for containers, automated deployments, and service templates where rewriting a file on every deployment is inconvenient. The manual also documents provider controls such as BEAMMP_PROVIDER_PORT_ENV and BEAMMP_PROVIDER_DISABLE_CONFIG. Provider behavior is version-sensitive, so verify those controls against the release notes for the exact BeamMP-Server version you run.
Keep the file and environment definitions consistent enough that an operator can understand the effective setup. When troubleshooting, record which variables are present, restart the process after changing them, and check the startup output for the resulting port, map, and capacity.
Self-hosting versus managed deployment
The configuration concepts remain the same, but responsibility changes depending on where the process runs.
| Concern | Self-hosted machine | Managed or container deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Port and firewall | You select the port, configure the operating-system firewall, and usually configure router forwarding. | The provider may expose or map a port; you still need to match the value expected by the server and provider. |
| Files and resources | You maintain the working directory, ServerConfig.toml, maps, and Resources. |
Use persistent mounts or the provider’s file manager so a rebuild does not erase content. |
| Backups and restarts | You create backups and arrange scheduled or failure-triggered restarts. | Check what backup, restart, and log-retention controls are actually included. |
| Capacity | You choose limits based on your hardware and connection. | Available CPU, memory, network allocation, and support policy determine practical limits; no universal value is promised by the BeamMP documentation. |
| Environment overrides | Set variables in the shell, service definition, or container configuration. | Use the provider’s environment interface and confirm it supports the BeamMP provider variables you need. |
Common failures and fixes
- Changes appear to do nothing: stop and restart the server, then verify the active working directory and configuration path.
- Startup fails after an edit: restore the last known-good file, check the
[General]header, quote text values, and look for misspelled keys or invalid TOML syntax. - Players cannot connect: confirm the port is unused, forwarded to the correct host, and allowed for both TCP and UDP by the firewall.
- The map does not load: verify that the map is installed on the server, that the
info.jsonpath is exact, and that custom content is under the configured resource directory. - Extra vehicles disappear: this is expected when a player exceeds
MaxCars; raise the value only if the host can handle the additional simulation load. - Logs are overwhelming: disable
DebugorLogChatafter collecting the evidence needed for diagnosis. - A public server remains unlisted: check
Private = false, a valid unexposedAuthKey, the active configuration file, and complete networking rules.
Operational checklist
- Generate the file once and retain the comments from the installed release.
- Keep
Port, router forwarding, and firewall rules identical. - Use
Private = truefor direct-connect testing and intentional private play. - Use
Private = falseonly with the authentication and network setup required for listing. - Protect
AuthKeyas a credential. - Check map and resource paths on the server itself.
- Change one group of settings, restart, and inspect logs before making more changes.
- Tune player and vehicle limits from observed performance rather than an assumed universal number.
- For release 3.2.0 and later, document any
BEAMMP_environment overrides alongside the file so deployments are reproducible.
Final guidance
Start with the generated template, keep the default bind address unless you have a networking reason to change it, and treat the port, forwarding, and firewall as one configuration. Visibility is controlled by Private; public identification additionally depends on AuthKey. Once the server can start reliably, validate the map and resources, then increase MaxPlayers and MaxCars gradually while observing real server behavior.
