If your family wants a change from Monopoly, Ticket to Ride is the strongest all-around place to start: it supports 2–5 players, is listed for ages 8 and up, and takes about 60 minutes, with low complexity. Families who prefer trading and resource development may prefer CATAN Family Edition; for younger children, consider CATAN Junior. The right pick depends on your group’s ages, player count, available time, and appetite for competition.
Start with Ticket to Ride for an approachable family game
Ticket to Ride is a good first step for a mixed-experience group that wants more to think about than a roll-and-move game without taking on a dense ruleset. GamesRadar+ lists it for 2–5 players, ages 8+, and about 60 minutes, and describes its complexity as low. Its guide says the rules can be learned in 15 minutes or less; that is the guide’s estimate, not a guarantee for every group. GamesRadar+’s family board-game guide was published October 1, 2026.
What play feels like
Players collect cards and use them to claim railway routes, building toward route goals. The central tension is deciding which connections to pursue and when: a route another player wants can be claimed first, so waiting too long may force a change of plan. The competition is real, but the game generally leaves each player working on their own route puzzle rather than negotiating every move.
GamesRadar+ editor Benjamin Abbott describes it as a “refreshingly sedate puzzle you work on by yourself,” while noting that popular routes can create an occasional “gold rush.” That balance makes it a practical choice for families who want interaction and meaningful decisions without constant direct conflict. Players seeking a highly complex strategy game may find it comparatively light.

Choose CATAN Family Edition for trading and resource development
CATAN Family Edition is a better fit if your group is drawn to trading and developing a shared landscape through resource choices. CATAN GmbH lists it for 3–4 players, ages 10+, and 60–90 minutes. The publisher says players can “Learn to play in about 15 minutes”; treat that as product guidance, since learning time varies with the group.
This is a distinct stand-alone product, not just a family-labelled version that can be expanded with the usual CATAN add-ons: CATAN GmbH states that Family Edition does not work with regular CATAN expansions and extensions. Check the box and listing carefully if compatibility with games you already own matters. CATAN GmbH’s CATAN Family Edition page provides the product details.

Consider CATAN Junior when younger children need simpler rules
For a family with younger children, CATAN Junior is the age-specific option to investigate. CATAN GmbH says its simplified rules support play by six-year-olds and confirms that two-player play is allowed. The official page does not establish a complete player range or a play duration in the information cited here, so check the edition’s packaging or current product listing for those details before buying. Make the choice around your actual group
- Count the players. A two-player evening can include Ticket to Ride or CATAN Junior; CATAN Family Edition starts at three.
- Use the youngest player’s age and reading comfort. The age guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for considering how comfortably the child can follow the rules and make choices.
- Be realistic about time. If your family has about an hour, Ticket to Ride has the clearest listed fit. Choose Family Edition only if a 60–90-minute game suits the evening.
- Pick the interaction style. Choose route competition for mostly independent planning, or Family Edition if trading and resource development sound appealing.
- Match the game to your family’s appetite for competition and luck. A family that dislikes being blocked may enjoy a calmer route puzzle more than a game with more negotiation; a group that likes table talk may want the trading experience.
