Gabe Newell arranged for a custom Half-Life-inspired garden gnome to fly on Rocket Lab’s 20 November 2020 Electron mission for three connected reasons: it brought a game achievement to life, tested a titanium 3D-printing technique, and raised money for a children’s hospital. The 150 mm figure, named Gnome Chompski, rode attached to the rocket’s Kick Stage—not as an independent satellite—and was expected to burn up when the stage re-entered Earth’s atmosphere.
Why did Gabe Newell send a garden gnome into space?
The flight combined a Half-Life 2: Episode Two tribute, an engineering test and a charitable pledge. Rocket Lab’s announcement described the figure as both a nod to the game’s “Little Rocket Man” achievement and a mass simulator intended to help test a novel additive-manufacturing process for possible future spacecraft components. Newell also pledged money to Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland based on the number of people watching the launch webcast.
The launch took place on Rocket Lab’s “Return to Sender” Electron mission from Māhia, New Zealand, on 20 November 2020. Rocket Lab’s pre-launch announcement and post-launch account describe the object’s engineering and charitable roles.
A real-life version of “Little Rocket Man”
In Half-Life 2: Episode Two, the “Little Rocket Man” achievement challenges players to carry a gnome through much of the game and place it inside a rocket. Rocket Lab called Gnome Chompski a tribute to that achievement, and GeekWire also identified the game gag as the source of the gnome’s notoriety. The flight turned the joke into a real rocket payload.

A test article, not just a game prop
Wētā Workshop made the 150 mm (about 5.9-inch) titanium figure using additive manufacturing. Rocket Lab said it would serve as a mass simulator and help test and qualify a novel 3D-printing technique that might be useful for future spacecraft components. That stated goal does not establish that the test later produced a particular spacecraft part.
A hospital fundraiser
Newell pledged one dollar for every person who watched the launch webcast, with the money designated for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Auckland’s Starship Children’s Hospital. Rocket Lab’s published accounts report the per-viewer pledge but do not establish a verified final viewer count or total donation, so a final amount cannot be stated from those accounts.

Was the gnome from Half-Life really launched?
Yes—but it was a custom titanium figure made for the mission, not a garden ornament taken from the game or a satellite with an independent mission. Gnome Chompski was attached to Electron’s Kick Stage as a mass simulator. Rocket Lab said the figure would remain attached through the mission and burn up with the stage during re-entry.
Rocket Lab reported that the mission deployed 30 satellites. That is mission context; it does not describe the gnome’s contribution or mean the gnome was one of those satellites.

What happened to Gnome Chompski after launch?
It stayed with the Kick Stage. The stage was expected to de-orbit and burn up on re-entry, so Gnome Chompski was not intended to return to Earth or remain in orbit. Rocket Lab’s post-launch account focused on the mission and Electron’s first-stage recovery, not on recovering the figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What did the launch mean for New Zealand?
GeekWire reported at the time that Newell had remained in New Zealand after the country closed its borders during the COVID-19 pandemic. It quoted Valve describing his wish to support “the economy and the community that sheltered him.” This is the contemporaneous explanation reported by GeekWire, rather than evidence of Newell’s private ranking of the launch’s motives.
