How the farm’s basic resource loop works
Rusty’s Retirement is an idle-farming simulator designed to sit at the bottom of your screen while you do other things. Its Steam listing describes a progression from planting crops to producing biofuel, selling that fuel, and reinvesting the proceeds in farm expansion. Rusty handles watering and harvesting, while helper robots can take on planting, watering, and harvesting tasks. The official Steam listing does not identify a single most-profitable crop or provide an optimal early-game build.
Learn the stages before chasing an ideal layout
- Plant crops. Begin with the crops and plots available to you; the official description establishes planting as the starting point, but does not prescribe a best crop.
- Produce biofuel. Crops feed into the biofuel stage of the progression.
- Sell biofuel. Sales provide the proceeds used for the next stage.
- Reinvest in the farm. Expansion is the stated use for those proceeds, allowing the farm to grow.
Keep those stages in mind when deciding what to unlock or automate. A layout or crop recommendation is only useful if it fits the resources and mechanics available in your current game version.
Use helper robots for their task roles
The official game description says helper robots assist with planting, watering, and harvesting, and that they can be customized and upgraded. Treat these as distinct jobs: an upgrade or robot that helps with one task does not automatically answer a different bottleneck. The Steam listing does not specify a best robot count, upgrade order, or crop-to-robot ratio, so avoid treating exact allocations from a player guide as official rules.

Steam’s Community guide index includes player-created material about efficiency, crops, giant crops, and layouts. Those guides can help you compare approaches, but their calculations and recommendations may depend on the game version and assumptions they use. Browse the Rusty’s Retirement Steam Community guides and check the date and stated conditions before applying a precise optimization claim.
Make the farm fit your desktop
The game is built to share screen space with other work. The official listing describes zoom controls, a vertical-farm presentation at the side of the screen, and Focus Mode, which slows crop production. These are options for managing the farm’s footprint and attention level, not guarantees about a particular production rate.

Use a Berry Bot for berry bushes
The FAQ says Berry Bots harvest berry bushes, while Harvest Bots do not. It also says a Bulb Hive makes bulblets visit bushes within its radius. If berry bushes are not being harvested, check whether you have the bot type the FAQ identifies for that crop rather than assuming a regular Harvest Bot will collect them.
Scroll across the farm
According to the FAQ, holding the right mouse button lets you scroll to see more of the farm.

Unlock and clear adjacent land
The FAQ says gray tiles beside the farm can be unlocked using Spare Parts. It says selecting the bulldozer icon shows the cost, after which Rusty or Haiku clears the unlocked area. The clearing process takes time, according to the same player-authored answer.
Relocate a building with patience
The FAQ says moving a building takes time. It does not give a universal completion time, so do not assume that a move is instantaneous.

Where to look for optimization advice
If you want to compare crop profits, giant-crop methods, or specific farm layouts, use current player guides and check what version and conditions they describe. The official listing explains the broad resource loop and available robot roles, but it does not establish crop-profit figures or a best layout. Steam’s guide index is player-generated rather than official documentation.
