It adds gravships, planetary and orbital exploration, new biomes, animals, quests, and a growing mechanoid threat. The separate free 1.6 update changes the base game; it is not the Odyssey expansion. A useful way to approach Odyssey is colony first, expedition second: keep your people and supplies in order while you gradually build a ship capable of taking them farther afield.
What does Odyssey add to RimWorld?
Released July 11, 2025, Odyssey extends the colony-management game beyond the single-map routine. Its central feature is the gravship: a flying home that can travel across the planet and, later, into orbit. Exploration brings new places to settle or visit, resources and equipment to find, wildlife, quests, and dangerous encounters.

Ludeon describes the expansion as a way to take an adventure beyond one map. In practice, its systems connect familiar colony needs—food, shelter, health, and work—to the risks of travel and unfamiliar environments.

You begin with a grav engine, rooms, thrusters, and chemfuel, then develop the vessel into a mobile colony. Expansion depends on rare gravcores found at dangerous sites, so the ship is a progression project, not an instant replacement for managing a settlement. The Steam listing also describes airtight walls, heaters, oxygen pumps, airlocks, vacuum barriers, and vac suits for spacefaring colonists. Ship layout and life support therefore matter alongside propulsion.

Biomes, landmarks, and wildlife
Odyssey adds environments with distinct survival pressures. Glowforests are dark and fungal; scarlands pair toxic rain with ruins and mechanoid danger; grasslands have long growing seasons but can face drought and fire; glacial plains bring cold and blizzards; and lava fields expose colonists to molten flows, ash, and falling debris. Landmarks include cliffs and chasms, abandoned colonies, underground maps, and coastal or island settlements. A location can change the problems you need to solve for food, shelter, weather, and safety, so inspect local hazards before committing to a landing.
The expansion adds more than 40 animals, according to Ludeon’s Steam listing. What a creature can do varies: animals may be tamed, trained, traded, or eaten, while some can help with tasks such as foraging or hunting. Odyssey also adds fishing.

Orbital destinations, quests, and threats
Gravships can reach orbital platforms, asteroids, satellites, and mechanoid wrecks. These destinations may contain resources and technology, but they can also hold hostile salvage crews, traps, and defenses; treat them as risky expeditions rather than guaranteed loot.

Quest leads can arrive through ancient maps, passing visitors, or signals. Examples include hunting an alpha thrumbo, raiding old crypts, and scavenging orbital sites. The expansion’s mechhive creates a longer-term threat, with a choice at its center: destroy it or take control of its power. Other additions include hunter and wasp drones, ancient sentries, a cyclops mechanoid, an insect hive queen, and special weapons. These are useful to know about, but they need not be your first priorities.

Do you need RimWorld to play Odyssey?
Yes. Odyssey is downloadable content for RimWorld, not a standalone game; the Steam listing says the base game is required. Odyssey released July 11, 2025. RimWorld’s 1.6 update is separate and free: Ludeon’s July 2025 announcement covered changes to the base game as well as the expansion’s release, but free 1.6 features should not be confused with paid Odyssey content.
How should a beginner get started?
The recommendations here are practical inferences from the published features, not a tested optimal build or route.

- Stabilize your colony first. Keep colonists housed, fed, medically cared for, and able to work before devoting scarce resources to ship construction. Odyssey adds exploration systems on top of the colony-management demands.
- Choose a manageable environment. If you have a choice during world generation, a familiar, less extreme setting may make it easier to learn than starting in a glowforest, scarlands, glacial plains, or lava fields. The available feature descriptions do not rank biomes by difficulty, so treat this as a cautious learning preference, not a definitive easiest-biome ranking.
- Grow the gravship gradually. Start small and protect the supplies your ordinary settlement needs. Gravcores gate ship expansion, and the described sources are dangerous sites; plan the vessel as a project you support over time.
- Prepare before a hazardous landing or orbital trip. Consider fuel, food, medical supplies, and a return route in light of the destination’s environment and threats. Ship life-support systems matter for space travel, while hostile scavengers and defenses make salvage sites uncertain.
- Use quests as optional direction. A quest can give an exploration-focused player a concrete goal, but weigh the hazards against what its description actually promises. Do not assume a particular reward or outcome.
What should you consider before exploring space?
Space travel combines the ship’s construction and life-support requirements with destination-specific dangers. Before committing to an orbital site, check what you know about its defenses and the supplies needed for the trip; the official descriptions explicitly warn about traps, hostile crews, and other threats. The promise of technology or resources is a reason to consider a site, not a guarantee that an expedition will pay off.
What should players with mods know?
Ludeon said in July 2025 that unmodded 1.5 saves load in 1.6, while some mods had not yet been updated at launch and would not work in 1.6. That is a launch-period statement, not a current compatibility guarantee for every mod. Before updating or adding mods, check the relevant mod pages for current version support.
