Behind the Scenes of Half-Life: Alyx: How Valve Rebuilt the Series for VR

Valve built Half-Life: Alyx around VR’s physical strengths—and its limits. Here’s how that choice changed combat, puzzles, horror and the way players move through the game.

Half-Life: Alyx was not a conventional sequel adapted to a headset. Valve built it from the ground up for VR, reshaping how players aim, explore, solve puzzles, handle objects and face danger. Its development shows both what physical interaction can add to Half-Life and what current VR hardware could not convincingly deliver.

Where Half-Life: Alyx fits in the series

Half-Life: Alyx takes place between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Players take the role of Alyx Vance in an “impossible fight” against the Combine, as Valve puts it on the Steam store page. The setting let Valve return to the series while telling a story from Alyx’s perspective before the events of Half-Life 2.

The more consequential choice was making VR the design premise rather than a display option. Valve’s official store copy says, “VR was built to enable the gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life.” The goal was to make exploration and problem-solving feel physical: players lean around cover to aim, search shelves for supplies and work with objects at hand rather than simply looking at them on a screen.

How VR changed familiar Half-Life gameplay

Aiming and searching became bodily actions

In a conventional first-person game, the player moves a camera and presses buttons to interact. In Alyx, players can lean around a broken wall to sight an enemy, reach into shelves and rummage for ammunition, or physically pull a headcrab away. These examples, described on Valve’s official game page and Steam listing, show how the game turned ordinary actions into deliberate hand-and-body tasks.

Puzzles and distractions use objects in the world

Valve’s examples also include manipulating a multitool for hacking and throwing a bottle to distract an enemy. The point is not that every interaction is realistic in every detail; it is that the player’s hands become part of how a puzzle or encounter is read and solved. Reaching, holding, turning and throwing objects can make the environment feel like a usable space, not just scenery surrounding a weapon.

Physics made the interactions cohere

In a March 27, 2020 interview with UploadVR, Valve developer Greg Coomer said Alyx depended heavily on robust physics and had a higher density of physical interactions than Half-Life 2. “Alyx relies tremendously on that,” he said of physics; he also stressed that it mattered enormously to the game’s interactions. That reliance helps explain why object handling was not a side feature: the world needed to respond consistently when players reached into it.

Why the game did not make every object a weapon

Physical interaction has a limit in VR: a simulated object can hit or push something in the game without delivering matching force to the player’s hand through the controller. In the UploadVR interview, Jason Mitchell used that mismatch to explain why the team did not make nearly every object a melee weapon. Coomer said the team chose not to lean into an interaction that was “not a strength of VR systems” at the time.

This was a design trade-off, not an absence of physics. Objects could be handled, moved and used in puzzles, but combat built around forceful physical blows risked promising a sensation the hardware could not provide. Valve leaned on interactions that worked through reach, aim, manipulation and throwing instead.

How Valve tuned danger and horror for VR

VR can make a threat feel unusually close because it occupies the player’s visual space and can demand a physical response. Coomer and Mitchell described a deliberate progression of horror intensity rather than an immediate plunge into the most stressful encounters. The first zombie, for example, is held behind a gate that players choose whether to open; other moments let threats approach while barriers keep the player protected.

The developers also described the Jeff encounter and its freezer section as difficult to get right through repeated iteration. Mitchell said the sequence intentionally overloads the player’s hands with simultaneous demands: aiming a flashlight, operating a multitool, opening a door, throwing bottles and covering the mouth. That kind of pressure makes the player’s physical tasks part of the horror, not just a visual backdrop. The interview describes Valve’s intended pacing; individual players may experience its intensity differently.

Why Alyx talks more than Gordon Freeman

Greg Coomer said Alyx’s back-and-forth with Russell gave the protagonist more depth and presence than a character who says little. He also noted that some newer Valve team members had worked on games such as Firewatch. This is a focused explanation of the dialogue approach from one interview, not a complete account of the game’s writing process.

What the development reveals about Valve’s VR work

In the same interview, Coomer said much of Alyx’s development happened alongside the team building the Index. He described the game’s ending as a challenge to Valve’s next-generation VR work: “This is what we want from you, give us solutions that will let us build something like this.” That remark describes a design aspiration, not an announcement of a particular future headset or game.

The developers also recalled that the late development period still brought noticeable polish and detail, while some categories of work were held until other elements were locked down. Coomer said VR-game development resources were moved onto Alyx later in its development. These comments offer glimpses of prioritization and iteration, rather than a complete production timeline.

How to play: movement, posture and PC VR

Valve’s current game page lists roomscale play and sitting or standing options, along with teleport, shift and continuous movement modes. It also describes finger-tracking and trigger-based controller styles. These are alternatives rather than a universal comfort ranking; the sources do not establish one best setting for every player.

Valve says computer VR hardware that works with SteamVR is supported. The Steam listing specifies Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor, 12 GB RAM, a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB VRAM, and SteamVR support as minimum PC requirements. Those are minimums, not a recommendation for an ideal experience, and the cited pages do not compare current headset models.

The game’s tools and related release

Valve’s Steam description says the game includes Source 2 tools for building new levels and contributing them through the Half-Life: Alyx Steam Workshop. The official game page also notes that the soundtrack has 11 chapters, following the game’s chapters, and can be downloaded through Steam Music or streamed and purchased through major music platforms.

For a separate look at the making of the game, Geoff Keighley’s The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx is a 25,000-word multimedia interactive storybook about Valve’s previous decade and the game’s development. Steam lists its release date as July 9, 2020, and says it does not use or require a VR headset: The Final Hours on Steam.
