Best for open-ended play: Minecraft
Minecraft is a strong continuing PC option for families who want a game that can be played alone or with others. Mojang describes single-player as a way to explore at your own pace and multiplayer as a way to connect with family and friends. Its official description lists a recommended PEGI rating of 7 and an ESRB rating of Everyone 10+; ESRB’s US listing specifies Fantasy Violence and In-Game Purchases.
Check edition, online play, and purchases
In Bedrock Edition, the Marketplace offers maps, skins, and mini-games for Minecoins. Before a child starts, decide which edition to use, review multiplayer and online settings, and discuss optional purchases. The right setup depends on how your family wants to play and what spending limits you set.

The game supports solo play as well as two-player online or shared-screen co-op, making it a fit for one child and an adult or two players—not a larger group playing simultaneously.
Consider the action and content descriptors
ESRB rates it E10+ for Fantasy Violence and Language. Its rating summary describes melee combat, bows, explosives, LEGO cultists, robotic dinosaurs, and boss battles. Sony presents it as a family game for parents to play with children, but the descriptors are useful for deciding whether its action is a good fit for your household.

Best free option: LEGO Fortnite
LEGO describes LEGO Fortnite as a category of free experiences available on PC and other platforms. ESRB rates the LEGO Fortnite experience E10+ for Fantasy Violence. Fortnite includes distinct experiences with their own rating assignments, so check the rating for the specific mode you plan to play; do not assume the LEGO experience’s rating applies to every part of Fortnite.

- For open-ended solo play or multiplayer: Consider Minecraft, and decide in advance whether to allow online play or Marketplace purchases.
- For two-player co-op in a game released during 2024: Consider LEGO Horizon Adventures, bearing in mind its action and ESRB descriptors.
- For a free experience: Look at LEGO Fortnite, then confirm the rating and details for the particular experience selected.
- For age guidance: Read the descriptors, not just the rating category. ESRB explains that its ratings provide information about a game or app so families can make informed choices; the rating itself cannot determine whether a child is ready for a particular game.
Local co-op means playing together on the same screen, while online co-op connects players over the internet. Check the game’s current setup details and the controllers needed for your PC before planning a shared-screen session.
