EA’s official Cautious preset is the clearest starting point for the 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow in FC 25 Ultimate Team: Counter build-up, a Deep defensive approach, Box to Box central midfielders and Poacher strikers. Treat it as a baseline, not a guaranteed competitive best. The right adjustments depend on your players and how much risk you want to take.

EA’s FC 25 FC IQ Deep Dive presents this as an available preset, not a ranking or a promise of results. EA also illustrates a different custom version of the formation using Short Passing and a high defensive approach. That contrast is a useful reminder: the shape can be configured for different approaches.
Why the roles and settings matter
FC 25’s FC IQ system makes a tactic more than a formation. EA says Player Roles guide how players behave and move off the ball, while roles also influence team width, chance creation and pressure. The formation determines which positions and roles are available and describes how the team lines up without the ball.

That matters in a narrow diamond. Its midfield and forwards are concentrated centrally, encouraging combinations through the middle and limiting some central space for the opponent. But there are no natural wide midfielders in the shape, so the team needs another way to provide width. Full-backs are a key source of that width, as discussed in the general tactical context in the FC Tactics guide; its FC 27 references mean it should not be treated as a source of precise FC 25 role instructions.
How to tune the setup for your squad
Keep Counter for quick transitions
Counter is the preset’s starting build-up style. It suits a plan to move forward quickly when possession turns over. If you would rather retain the ball and build attacks more patiently, compare it with a more controlled build-up option available in the tactic settings. EA confirms that different settings are possible, but the available sources do not establish which style performs best in Ultimate Team.

Choose defensive risk deliberately
The preset pairs a Deep defensive approach with Counter. EA’s separate high-defensive custom example shows that a more aggressive approach is possible, but it does not establish that one is superior. A higher approach can reflect a more proactive defensive plan; choose it only if that suits how you defend and the cover your players can provide.
Balance full-back support and cover
Because the formation lacks wide midfielders, consider how much you want your full-backs to advance and support attacks. More forward support can help supply width, but it also leaves more space to defend when possession is lost. If opponents are getting through on the flanks, prioritize cover rather than asking both full-backs to push on at once.

Check role familiarity before copying a code
EA’s role system affects off-ball movement, so a tactic’s role choices should make sense for the players you actually have. Check each selected player’s role familiarity and suitability before importing another player’s setup. A shared tactic code cannot make an unsuitable player a good fit for a role.
Save alternatives for different match situations
FC 25 lets you save up to five custom tactics, each with its own formation, tactical settings and roles, and switch tactics in a match. Use that flexibility to keep the Cautious preset as a reference and save a separate option for a specific problem—for example, an approach with more flank cover against opponents exploiting the wings, or a more conservative setup when protecting a lead.

EA’s tactic codes are 11 digits and encode the formation, build-up style, defensive approach and selected roles and focuses. EA says codes work across modes, consoles and generations. When comparing a shared code with your own tactic, check its settings and player-role fit rather than assuming the code itself makes it effective.

It is a well-grounded starting point because it is EA’s official Cautious preset for the formation. It is not established as the universally best competitive setup: the cited EA documentation describes system mechanics and presets, but does not rank tactics, and there is no cited controlled test or win-rate comparison for this exact FC 25 Ultimate Team configuration. Adjust the build-up, defensive risk and full-back support to the way you play instead of treating any one preset as a guaranteed meta choice.
