A strong starting point for the 4-2-1-3 in EA Sports FC 25 Ultimate Team is Balanced build-up, a High defensive line at 70, and conservative fullbacks behind two deep-lying playmakers. Use it as a template, not a universal “best” tactic: a second published setup swaps in Holding CDMs and Short Passing for more midfield protection, while a supporting Wingback adds width at greater defensive risk.
Recommended 4-2-1-3 tactics
Operation Sports presents this setup as an outline used by European Championship winner Emre Yilmaz. The guide itself cautions that a world-class player’s approach may need adjustment for other players. Its High line is intended to press and disrupt through balls; the trade-off is that it calls for athletic center backs and fast, skilled fullbacks. The risk implied by a high line is exposure to space behind the defense, rather than a separately tested result.

Team tactics: Balanced build-up and a High defensive line set to 70. In this shape, the two CDMs sit behind the CAM and front three; the role and focus choices determine how that central platform behaves.
How the published alternatives differ
Another Operation Sports template uses Short Passing, a High defensive approach at 70, and Holding (Defend) at both CDM positions. It keeps a balanced Playmaker at CAM, roaming Inside Forwards, and an Advanced Forward on Attack. Its back line pairs a balanced Wingback on one flank with a balanced Fullback on the other.

A variant associated with Vejrgang instead uses Balanced build-up, Deep-Lying Playmakers on Build-Up at CDM, and balanced Fullbacks on both sides. These are published templates, not a definitive or currently validated ranking.

Across the cited setups, Inside Forward (Roaming) on the wings and Advanced Forward (Attack) up front are consistent choices. No single setup is established as universally best; competitive tactics can also be sensitive to game patches.

Adapt the setup to your squad and match
Choose roles your players can perform
EA describes FC IQ as FC 25’s tactical and positional system, built around Player Roles, Team Tactics, and Smart Tactics. Roles guide players’ off-ball behavior, while Role Familiarity indicates a player’s proficiency in a role. Where possible, choose players whose available role familiarity fits the assignment rather than forcing the template onto unsuitable players. EA reported 31 Roles and 52 Role/Focus combinations at launch; these are system counts, not performance measures. See EA SPORTS FC 25 FC IQ Deep Dive.
Adjust the main trade-offs
- If you want more protection through the middle, try Holding (Defend) at both CDM positions, as in the alternative template.
- If your fullbacks need to stay home, retain Fullback (Defend) on both sides. If you want extra flank support and accept less defensive security, the cited alternative uses one balanced Wingback.
- Keep the High line at 70 only if your defenders can support that approach; the featured guide specifically calls for athletic center backs and fast, skilled fullbacks.
- Use Balanced or Short Passing according to your build-up preference. The published templates offer both, not proof that either is superior for every squad.
Import and switch tactics in-game
EA says an FC 25 tactic code has 11 digits encoding the formation, build-up style, defensive awareness, and selected roles and focuses. Codes work across modes, consoles, and generations. A written template is not itself an import code: use one only if you have obtained a matching code, rather than guessing or inventing one.

- To switch to a saved custom tactic during a match, press Left on the directional buttons to open My Tactics, then select the saved tactic you want.
- Press Right on the directional buttons to open Tactical Focus and choose Default, Attacking, or Defending to modify the active tactic.
- Allow time for the change to take effect. EA notes that players transition into new positions rather than appearing there instantly.
