There is no official universal ranking of abilities in Sonic X Shadow Generations. For Shadow, the best choice depends on the obstacle: use Doom Spears against groups or switches, Doom Morph for special terrain and narrow routes, and Chaos Control to stop moving hazards or expose hidden paths. Sonic’s best skills depend on whether you are playing Classic or Modern Sonic and on the stage.
Which Shadow abilities are best?
Shadow’s Doom Powers serve different purposes rather than competing as a single strongest move. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has described them as tools for platforming as well as combat, not merely additional attacks. The recommendations below are based on each power’s documented function, not an official tier list.

How to choose a Doom Power for the obstacle
- Several enemies or a switch: choose Doom Spears for its multi-target lock-on and switch activation.
- A single enemy you can use to change position: try Doom Blast and direct the launched enemy where you need it.
- Water: use Doom Surf; add a Spin Attack when an object in the way needs breaking.
- Special ground, a narrow gap, or a swing route: use Doom Morph.
- An aerial glide route: use Doom Wing if you can afford its ongoing Ring drain.
- A moving hazard or a visible Chaos Control trail: use Chaos Control, provided the Chaos Gauge is full.
What Chaos Control does beyond stopping hazards
Chaos Control is useful for timing: freezing enemies and mechanisms can create an opening to pass an obstacle. It also has an exploration function. Watch for the special light trails that appear during the effect and touch one to follow a hidden route. Iizuka has said the team designed levels to use Shadow’s existing Chaos Control move to reveal new platforms and create different ways to attack bosses. (Sonic Stadium interview with Takashi Iizuka)
How to unlock more Doom Powers
Shadow’s available Doom Powers increase as the game progresses. Clearing stages unlocks locations and awards Doom’s Gear. When you have a Gear, activate a Power Sealing Device to obtain a new Doom Power. SEGA also describes the powers as becoming usable through story progression and the unlocking of these devices. Which abilities are best for Sonic?
Sonic’s options depend on character style and stage, so there is no one ability to recommend across every level. The manual says equipped Skills are selected through Skill Customization and that available skills vary by character. A Shield skill protects against damage once.
Modern Sonic
Modern Sonic’s style centers on Boost and Homing Attack, according to SEGA’s feature page. In designated stages, he can use the Orange Rocket Wisp to shoot upward through certain obstacles. (SEGA feature page; SEGA online manual)

Classic Sonic
Classic Sonic’s style centers on the spin jump and spin dash. In designated stages, the Pink Spikes Wisp lets him cling to walls and ceilings. These Wisp powers are stage-specific, not abilities available throughout every level. (SEGA feature page; SEGA online manual)

Sonic X Shadow Generations was announced for release on October 25, 2024. The package includes a complete remaster of Sonic Generations and a new Shadow Generations campaign. SEGA’s announcement lists PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and Epic Games Store; it specifies that Xbox and PC versions are digital-only.
