There is no single best action game for every PC player. Choose Black Myth: Wukong for a single-player, Chinese-mythology setting and staff-focused combat with customizable abilities; choose Elden Ring for open-world exploration, broad build options and demanding encounters. The other picks below suit different priorities, from loot-driven combat to story-led action.
Black Myth: Wukong vs. Elden Ring: which should you choose?
| Game | Combat and progression | World and challenge | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Myth: Wukong | Staff techniques combined with spells, abilities, weapons and equipment. Steam’s listing describes it as a single-player action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology. | Its identity centers on action and mythic encounters rather than the open-world structure emphasized by Elden Ring. | Players who want a focused single-player action RPG and a staff-led combat style. |
| Elden Ring | Action-RPG combat with extensive character and build experimentation. Steam lists single-player, online co-op and online PvP. | An open-world journey built around exploration and challenging encounters. | Players who want to explore a large fantasy world, shape a build and take on difficult bosses. |
These are different kinds of action RPG, not interchangeable versions of the same experience. If you prefer to build around a distinctive weapon style and a single-player mythic setting, start with Wukong. If roaming, discovering routes and adapting a character build are central to what you enjoy, Elden Ring is the stronger match. These are editorial recommendations, not an objective or measured ranking.

Check your PC before choosing Wukong
Steam’s minimum graphics-card requirement for Black Myth: Wukong is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB. That requirement is not a promise of a particular frame rate or visual quality. Compare your full PC against the current system requirements on Steam before buying.

#1 Best Overall
- Next generation of open-world gaming
- Developed by Bethesda Game Studios under the direction of Todd Howard
- Fallout 4 is the follow up to the 2008 'Game of the Year' Fallout 3
- First title from the world-renowned studio since the release of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
For combat-forward or Soulslike play
- Nioh 3: Consider it if you want combat to be the main attraction; GamesRadar characterizes it as combat-focused.
- Lies of P: A story-driven option for players interested in a Soulslike-style challenge with a stronger narrative emphasis, as described by GamesRadar.
For loot and top-down action
- Diablo 4: A fit for players drawn to loot-focused action and co-op. Check its current PC store listing for the modes, edition contents and requirements that apply to your purchase.
- Path of Exile 2: GamesRadar’s 2026 list describes it as a top-down action RPG in early access. Early-access status can change, so confirm the game’s current listing before buying.
For story-led action
- Cyberpunk 2077: Offers a story-driven direction with flexible combat, according to GamesRadar’s characterization.
- Yakuza 0: A story-focused choice whose action centers on brawling.
- The Witcher 3: A story-led action-RPG alternative for players who value character and narrative alongside combat.
For vocation-based combat or co-op
- Dragon’s Dogma 2: Worth a look if changing or choosing combat vocations is appealing; GamesRadar highlights its vocation-based combat.
- Monster Hunter World: Consider it if cooperative hunting is part of the appeal. Check its current PC listing to confirm available multiplayer options and requirements.
How to compare games before buying
- Combat texture: Decide whether you want staff-led action and ability combinations, deliberate high-challenge combat, technical fighting, or loot-focused encounters.
- World and pacing: An open world invites exploration; a more encounter-focused structure keeps attention on fights; top-down dungeon crawling and story-led missions offer different rhythms.
- Challenge and recovery: If repeated attempts and a demanding learning curve sound appealing, Elden Ring may suit you. If you want other kinds of flexibility, inspect the specific game’s difficulty options and progression systems rather than assuming every action RPG handles challenge the same way.
- Build depth: Look at what you can actually change: character stats, weapons, skills, abilities, equipment, classes or vocations, and loot. More options are useful only if experimenting with them is part of the fun for you.
- Solo or multiplayer: Steam lists Elden Ring as supporting single-player, online co-op and online PvP. Check each other game’s current store page for its multiplayer modes; do not assume a genre label guarantees co-op.
- Hardware fit: Compare your machine with the current PC requirements on the relevant store page. Minimum specifications alone do not establish expected performance.
Understand Elden Ring editions and the expansion
Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion, not a standalone replacement for Elden Ring. Bandai Namco states that the base game is required. The expansion adds the Land of Shadow, weapons, equipment, weapon skills, magic, enemies, boss encounters and plotlines. Before purchasing, verify whether the product you selected contains only the base game, only the expansion, or both; do not buy the expansion on the assumption that it includes the base game.
Bandai Namco’s ELDEN RING page also reports PC availability for the Tarnished Pack and an August 2026 patch intended to support it and implement gameplay balance adjustments. Because bundles and editions can change, confirm the live store listing and its contents before purchase.
Rank #2
- Improved NPC conversation system where Commander Shepard can take matters into your own hands – interrupting or using force to get the answer required.
- The second act of BioWare's epic sci-fi RPG trilogy continues the story of Commander Shepard and humanity's first steps onto the galactic stage.
- Integration with the original Mass Effect game allows players to import saved files and contiue play with those files in Mass Effect 2.
- Choose from 19 different weapons, including devastating heavy weapons that can end a battle in seconds.
- New location based damage system allows for targeting of key weak points, blasting off limbs, igniting enemies, or cripple and disable enemy troops.
Quick recommendations
- Pick Black Myth: Wukong for a single-player Chinese-mythology action RPG built around staff techniques and combinations of abilities and equipment, provided your PC meets the current requirements.
- Pick Elden Ring for open-world exploration, build experimentation and difficult encounters. Add Shadow of the Erdtree only after confirming you own or are buying the required base game.
- Try Nioh 3 or Lies of P if you want a combat-forward or story-driven Soulslike alternative, respectively.
- Try Diablo 4 or Path of Exile 2 for loot-oriented action, with the latter identified as early access by GamesRadar’s 2026 guide.
- Try Cyberpunk 2077, Yakuza 0 or The Witcher 3 if story and character matter as much as action.
GamesRadar’s 2026 recommendations are a useful shortlist, not an exhaustive survey of every action subgenre or a guarantee that availability, editions, requirements or early-access status have remained unchanged. Check each current PC store page for those details before purchase.
