For a lower-cost dedicated living-room console, Xbox Series S is the strongest documented choice in the available evidence. Xbox describes it as the lowest-cost way for console players to access the games listed in its June 25, 2026 price announcement, although that announcement does not state a current price. Check live listings in your country before buying. If you already own a suitable phone, tablet, computer, television or other supported device, cloud gaming can avoid a console purchase altogether. Handheld PCs and Nintendo Switch 2 are better understood as different experiences—portable PC gaming or Nintendo’s hybrid system—not as proven cheaper replacements.

The right alternative depends on whether you prioritize a low upfront cost, ownership of a PC library, portability, Nintendo exclusives, or dependable play without an internet connection.

Quick comparison

Option Up-front cost evidence How games are accessed Internet dependence Best fit
Xbox Series S Xbox calls it its lowest-cost console option; a current price is not stated in the cited announcement. Certified refurbished units may be up to US$100 below MSRP through Microsoft Stores, subject to availability. Dedicated console access to compatible games and services. Online features and downloads need internet; local play depends on the individual game. A conventional TV-based console at the lowest documented Xbox entry point.
Xbox Cloud Gaming May require no new hardware if you already own a supported device. Most games require an eligible Game Pass plan; selected free-to-play games require only a free Microsoft account. Streaming from the cloud rather than installing a local console copy. High. Xbox recommends 10 Mbps for mobile and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs and tablets. Players who want to avoid buying a console and have a reliable connection.
GeForce NOW Requires a compatible device and, for many games, a game you already own. Paid Performance and Ultimate memberships include 100 monthly playtime hours, with up to 15 unused hours rolling over; regional terms apply. Streams supported games from connected stores such as Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app and Xbox. High. Image quality and latency depend on your connection, location and device. PC players with an existing library who do not want to buy a gaming computer.
Windows handheld PC The cited ROG Xbox Ally announcement establishes features, not a lower price than a console. Windows storefronts, Xbox and Game Pass, plus cloud and Remote Play options. Varies: installed games can work offline where supported; cloud and Remote Play require a connection. Portable PC gaming and access to several storefronts.
Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo of Canada announced a C$629.99 launch MSRP for June 5; this is Canadian launch evidence, not a current worldwide price. Nintendo’s own game ecosystem in handheld or docked mode. Varies by game and feature. Players who want one device for handheld and TV play and prefer Nintendo’s library.
Steam Deck OLED The reviewed official product page did not provide usable price evidence for this comparison. Portable PC library through its supported software environment. Installed games can be played without streaming; online features still need internet. Readers specifically seeking a portable PC rather than a living-room console.

Prices, promotions, stock, taxes, subscriptions and eligibility change by country. Treat every figure above as qualified by its source and date, not as a universal checkout total.

1. Xbox Series S: the safest dedicated-console answer

Xbox’s June 25, 2026 announcement identifies Series S as the lowest-cost way for console players to access the games discussed there. That makes it the best-supported lower-cost dedicated home console in this comparison. The announcement says price changes take effect August 1, 2026, but it does not give a current Series S price. You must therefore check a live listing in your market rather than rely on an old launch price or a foreign currency conversion.

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Why it fits a cost-conscious console buyer

  • It is a purpose-built console rather than a streamed service or a general-purpose computer.
  • You get a conventional TV-first experience, with console software and accessories designed around that use.
  • It avoids the larger initial outlay associated with a flagship next-generation model, without asking you to assemble a PC or select a streaming device.
  • Xbox also says certified refurbished consoles can be available through Microsoft Stores for up to US$100 off MSRP. That is a maximum discount, not a guaranteed price, and eligibility and inventory vary.

What to verify before checkout

  1. Confirm the exact Series S model and storage configuration shown by the retailer.
  2. Check whether the listing is new, certified refurbished or used, and read the warranty terms.
  3. Calculate the cost of any required game purchases or subscription you actually intend to use.
  4. Verify local stock, tax, delivery charges and return policy; Xbox’s announcement does not establish those details for every country.

Series S is the strongest answer when you want a dedicated console and do not want to depend on cloud latency. It is not evidence that every Series S listing is cheaper than every handheld or that it is the cheapest gaming device overall.

2. Cloud gaming: the lowest hardware commitment

Cloud gaming is the only option here that can reduce the hardware purchase to zero when you already own a supported device. Xbox says its Cloud Gaming service works on supported consoles, Windows PCs, televisions, phones, tablets, virtual-reality headsets and web browsers. Most cloud games require an eligible Game Pass plan and a supported region. Selected free-to-play games require only a free Microsoft account.

How the access model differs from buying a console

A cloud session runs on a remote server and sends video to your screen while your controls travel back over the internet. You are paying for access to a service and its supported catalog, not necessarily buying a permanent local copy of each streamed game. The available titles and features vary by region, plan and platform, so check the game page and plan terms before subscribing.

Connection requirements

  • Xbox recommends at least 10 Mbps for mobile devices.
  • Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs and tablets.
  • Those figures are minimum recommendations, not a guarantee of image quality or low latency.
  • Xbox says performance varies with connection, location, device and other factors. Wi-Fi congestion, distance from a router and a busy household can matter even when a speed test exceeds the recommendation.

Set up Xbox Cloud Gaming without buying a console

  1. Confirm that your country and device are supported on Xbox’s current Cloud Gaming service page.
  2. Sign in with a Microsoft account and check whether the game you want is included in an eligible plan or is one of the selected free-to-play titles.
  3. Use a compatible controller when the game requires one; touch controls are available only where the title and platform support them.
  4. Test the service on your normal network before committing to a long subscription. Try the same room and device you will use for regular play.
  5. If you start a trial or recurring plan, review the billing settings immediately. Xbox states that recurring billing is on by default; turn it off in your account settings if you do not want the plan to renew.

When cloud gaming is a poor substitute

Cloud gaming is a bad fit for an unreliable connection, strict data caps, competitive games where latency is decisive, or a household that cannot reserve enough bandwidth. It also cannot provide a game that is unavailable in your region or excluded from your plan. A local console is usually more predictable for offline play and for households that do not want their experience to depend on a service catalog.

Microsoft reported that 140 million hours were streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming between October and December 2024 in a March 2025 Game Developer article. That is Microsoft’s own usage figure, not an independent estimate of the whole cloud-gaming market.

3. GeForce NOW: best when you already own PC games

GeForce NOW generally streams games that you own through a supported storefront. NVIDIA lists Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app and Xbox among the supported stores, and also supports many free-to-play games. This makes it materially different from a catalog subscription: you often need to purchase the game separately, but you may be able to keep using that purchase on a compatible local PC later.

  • International (UK) Version
  • 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)

  • 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32

Who should choose it

  • A PC player with an established library who lacks a gaming desktop or laptop.
  • Someone who wants to use an existing low-power computer, television or other supported client for demanding games.
  • A player willing to check title support and accept streaming latency in exchange for avoiding new hardware.

Membership limits to include in your budget

NVIDIA’s FAQ says paid Performance and Ultimate memberships include 100 hours of monthly playtime, with up to 15 unused hours rolling over. Memberships, prices, supported features and availability vary by region. Do not multiply a foreign monthly price into your own currency and call it a total cost; check the local checkout page and the terms attached to your account.

Practical setup sequence

  1. Check that your country and device are supported and that the specific games you want are available on GeForce NOW.
  2. Create or sign in to your NVIDIA account and select a membership level, if needed.
  3. Connect the relevant storefront accounts, such as Steam or Epic Games Store, when prompted.
  4. Launch a supported title and confirm that your save files and controller work as expected.
  5. Measure playability during your busiest normal internet period, not only during a quiet test.

GeForce NOW is a strong alternative to buying a gaming PC, but it is not a universal replacement for a console. Storefront ownership, title support, regional membership rules and connection quality all determine whether a particular game works.

4. Windows handheld PCs: portable libraries, not proven bargains

The official announcement for the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds describes a Windows handheld with access to Xbox, Game Pass and other PC storefronts, as well as Xbox cloud gaming and Remote Play. That combination gives you more software choice than a single console ecosystem and lets you play away from a television. The announcement does not establish that the device is cheaper than a next-generation console, so do not treat its feature list as a price comparison.

Advantages

  • Portable PC play in a single device.
  • Access to multiple storefronts rather than one console store.
  • Installed games for situations where you cannot stream.
  • Cloud gaming and Remote Play when you want to continue a game from another device.

Trade-offs

  • Windows interfaces and PC launchers can require more setup than a console dashboard.
  • Different games have different controller, display, performance and compatibility requirements.
  • You still need to budget for games, accessories and any subscription you choose.
  • The cited announcement gives no battery-life, storage, current-price or total-cost evidence that would prove affordability against Series S.

Choose this category because portability and PC access matter, not simply because you assume a handheld is cheaper.

5. Nintendo Switch 2: a hybrid alternative with a separate ecosystem

Nintendo describes Switch 2 as playable both handheld and docked. Nintendo of Canada announced a June 5 launch at a Canadian MSRP of C$629.99. That is a launch MSRP for Canada, not a current global price, and it should not be converted into a universal ranking without checking local listings.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa characterized it this way: “Nintendo Switch 2 is the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go based on eight years of play and discovery that began with Nintendo Switch.” The statement is Nintendo’s description of its own product direction, not an independent performance or value assessment.

When Switch 2 makes sense

  • You want one device that can move between handheld and TV play.
  • You prefer Nintendo’s games and ecosystem to the Xbox or PC catalogs.
  • You value a console designed around portability rather than a Windows desktop interface.

Why it is not a straightforward cheap-console substitute

The available evidence does not establish a current worldwide price advantage, a comparable subscription total or a cross-platform library match with Xbox or PC. Game availability, accessory pricing and local supply can change the value calculation. Buy it for the hybrid format and Nintendo library, not on an unsupported assumption that it is universally less expensive.

6. Steam Deck OLED and similar handheld PCs

The official Steam Deck OLED product page was reviewed, but the available material did not expose enough price information to support an affordability claim. It is therefore reasonable to discuss this category as a portable PC option, but not to label it the cheapest alternative or assign it a current price here.

Handheld PCs in this class appeal to players who want a PC library in a portable form and are willing to manage compatibility, settings and storefront differences. They can play installed software without cloud streaming, while online multiplayer and downloads still require connectivity. Compare the exact model, storage, warranty, regional price and supported games before choosing one over Series S or a hybrid console.

Choose by play style

You want the least complicated TV setup

Start with Xbox Series S. It is the only option in this comparison explicitly identified by its manufacturer as the lowest-cost console option, and it does not require you to turn a phone, browser or PC into the primary gaming device.

You already own a good phone, tablet, TV or computer

Test Xbox Cloud Gaming first. If your connection meets the recommendations and the games you want are available in your region and plan, you may avoid new hardware. Keep Series S in reserve if latency or catalog restrictions become frustrating.

You own games across PC storefronts

Evaluate GeForce NOW. Confirm each important title individually, because a supported storefront does not mean every game in that storefront is available.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

You want to play away from a television

Choose between a Windows handheld PC and Switch 2 based on library preference. The former emphasizes PC storefront choice; the latter emphasizes Nintendo’s hybrid console experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You play competitive or latency-sensitive games

Prefer local hardware where possible. Cloud services can be excellent on a stable connection, but both Xbox and NVIDIA caution in different ways that performance depends on network and device conditions.

Budget the real cost, not just the device

Make a simple first-year worksheet before deciding:

  1. Record the local purchase price, tax, delivery and any required accessories.
  2. Add the games you will actually buy rather than assuming a catalog contains everything you want.
  3. Add recurring Game Pass, GeForce NOW or other service charges only where they are necessary for your chosen games.
  4. Check whether a promotional rate ends and whether recurring billing renews automatically.
  5. Account for your existing hardware: a cloud option is cheaper only if your current phone, computer, TV, controller and network are adequate.
  6. Price the alternative in your own currency and region. The Series S announcement provides no current price, the Switch 2 figure is Canadian launch MSRP, and the handheld announcements do not prove comparative affordability.

Common failure points and fixes

“The stream looks blurry or keeps stopping.”

Move closer to the router, use a wired connection where practical, pause other heavy downloads and retest at the time you normally play. Meeting 10 or 20 Mbps does not eliminate congestion or latency problems.

“The game I want is missing.”

Check the service’s current regional catalog and plan eligibility. A game may be unavailable because of licensing, platform, region or storefront support, not because your device is incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I was charged after a trial.”

Review the account’s recurring-billing setting as soon as you subscribe. Xbox says recurring billing is on by default; disable renewal if you intend to stop after the trial or current period.

“My PC game launches but the controls are wrong on a handheld.”

Check the game’s controller support, launcher requirements and device-specific compatibility before buying additional accessories. Windows handhelds provide flexibility, but that flexibility can require more troubleshooting than a dedicated console.

“A foreign price makes one option look dramatically cheaper.”

Do not use it as a final comparison. Convert nothing until you have checked local tax, import costs, warranty coverage, stock and the date of the quoted price.

Bottom line by buyer

  • Best documented low-cost dedicated console: Xbox Series S, with current local price still needing verification.
  • Lowest hardware commitment: Xbox Cloud Gaming, if your existing device, connection, region and plan qualify.
  • Best for an existing PC library: GeForce NOW, subject to storefront and title support.
  • Best for portable PC flexibility: a Windows handheld PC such as the ROG Xbox Ally category, but no cited evidence proves it is cheaper.
  • Best for Nintendo’s handheld-plus-TV format: Switch 2, using the C$629.99 Canadian launch MSRP only as a dated regional reference.
