What “high quality” means for a screenshot
Image quality is determined by more than the button you press. The game’s rendered image, your console or PC display settings, the capture format and resolution offered by the device, and what happens when the file is edited or shared all matter. A capture that looks sharp in a local gallery can be resized or recompressed by a messaging service, social platform, or app.

There is therefore no single setting that is guaranteed to be best for every PS5 game or Windows display. Inspect the controls on your own hardware and software version, keep the original file, and treat any uploaded or messaged copy as a derivative unless you have verified its format and resolution.

- Capture the right area: a selected desktop region, an entire screen, a game window, or the game’s own rendered frame are different jobs.
- Use the available format and resolution controls: PS5 exposes these through Capture Options, while Windows tools expose different choices depending on the tool and setup.
- Preserve the original: save locally before cropping, adding text, changing size, or sending the file through a service that may compress it.
- Choose the transfer route deliberately: USB is the documented physical-backup route on PS5; the PlayStation App is convenient where supported but has eligibility and retention limits.
How do I take a high-quality screenshot on PS5?
1. Open the Create menu
- Press the controller’s Create button.
- Choose Take Screenshot for the current frame. The same menu also contains Save Recent Gameplay and Start New Recording.
- Open Capture Options before an important capture. PlayStation identifies this area as the place to change screenshot or video format and resolution. The currently documented support page does not enumerate one fixed list of choices, so use the options actually displayed on your console rather than assuming a particular format or a universal 4K result.
PlayStation’s current capture overview is available at PS5 captures and broadcasts. Labels and available choices can vary with software version, region, and supported hardware.

2. Compose before pressing the button
Pause or enter the game’s photo mode when it offers one, hide menus and HUD elements when the game permits it, and wait for an animation or particle effect to settle if those details are important. These are composition choices, not guarantees of a particular resolution. If the game is displaying a pre-rendered cutscene, an in-game photo mode, or a dynamic HDR scene, the result still reflects what the console is outputting at the moment of capture.
3. Verify the file in Media Gallery
Open Media Gallery from the Games home screen and select the new image. Check that it is the intended frame before sharing or editing. If you need to retain maximum flexibility, leave this first copy untouched and make a separate edited version.
How to share a PS5 screenshot
Share immediately from Recently created
- Press the PS button.
- Open the Recently created card.
- Select the screenshot and choose Share.
- Add a message if required, then select the destination shown on your console.
PlayStation documents a limit of up to four screenshots in one share. A single video clip can also be included in a share, but that limit does not increase the number of still images you can attach. See How to share screenshots and video clips on PS5 consoles for the supported flow.

From the Games home screen, open Media Gallery, highlight one or more captures, and choose the share command. This route is useful when you have already left the Recently created card or want to review several images first. The same PlayStation support page describes the sharing controls and the four-screenshot maximum.

Use the built-in editing tools only for the copy you intend to publish
Media Gallery’s Edit controls include crop, rotate or frame adjustments, and adding text. Use them to improve composition or add an annotation; they do not raise the resolution of the underlying capture. Keep the untouched file if you may later need the full frame, a different crop, or evidence of the original image.
How to copy a PS5 screenshot to USB storage
USB export is the documented physical route for a durable copy or a transfer to another computer. PlayStation documents the action but does not specify a required brand, capacity, or speed for the drive.
- Connect compatible USB storage to the PS5.
- Open Media Gallery and select the screenshot.
- Open More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Copy to USB Drive.
- Safely disconnect the drive after the copy is complete, then connect it to the computer or other device where you want to work with the image.
The documented menu path is described in How to view screenshots and video clips on PS5 consoles. If the option is unavailable, confirm that the drive is connected and recognized by the console, and try selecting the capture from Media Gallery rather than from a share card.
Using the PlayStation App to move or share captures
The PlayStation App can provide a quick phone-sharing route, but it is not a universal or permanent archive. The PS5 must be linked to the app and the capture feature must be enabled. PlayStation says eligible screenshots and certain non-4K gameplay videos can auto-upload, and that app captures remain available for 14 days after creation.

- Link the PS5 to the PlayStation App account.
- Enable the capture-upload feature in the app and console setup when prompted.
- Create the screenshot on the PS5.
- Open the app’s captures area after the upload has completed, then save or share the image from the phone.
Availability is region-dependent, and not every capture qualifies. Check the current eligibility and setup instructions at How to access PS5 game captures on PS App. For anything you must retain, copy the original to USB or another local destination before the 14-day app window expires.
How do I take a high-quality screenshot on a Windows PC?
Choose the tool based on what is on screen. Snipping Tool is designed for a desktop region, window, or full screen. Xbox Game Bar is the more direct built-in choice for a screenshot during most PC games. Neither tool should be treated as offering identical output controls on every Windows installation, game, or hardware configuration.

Snipping Tool: desktop, window, region, and full-screen captures
Microsoft describes Snipping Tool this way: “Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen. Use Snipping Tool to make changes or notes, then save, and share.” The tool supports freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen snips.

Capture a normal desktop or application image
- Open Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu or search.
- Choose the snip mode: Freeform, Rectangular, Window, or Full screen.
- Select the area or window. For a menu or tooltip that disappears quickly, use the tool’s delay option and set the required delay before making the snip.
- Review the result in Snipping Tool.
- Use the editing controls only if you are working on a copy. Microsoft documents an editing route through Paint for sizing, color, and other changes.
- Save the file. Microsoft says captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default; use Save as to choose another location and to make your own preserved original.
- Share from the tool only after confirming that the saved local file is the version you want to keep.

When Snipping Tool is the wrong choice
Snipping Tool is intended for visible Windows content. If a game minimizes, blocks overlays, or does not cooperate with a desktop snip, switch to Game Bar or the game’s own screenshot control. Do not infer from a successful desktop snip that the same method will work in every exclusive-full-screen or protected game.
Xbox Game Bar: screenshots during most PC games
- Start the game and display the frame you want.
- Open Game Bar with the Windows Game Bar shortcut or the method enabled on your system.
- In the capture widget, select the camera icon or Take screenshot.
- Open the resulting notification or the capture location to verify the image and retain a local copy before sharing.
Microsoft says Game Bar works with most PC games. “Most” is not a guarantee for every title, rendering mode, overlay setting, or anti-cheat configuration. If the widget does not appear, confirm that Game Bar is enabled in Windows and try the game’s own screenshot command. Microsoft’s overview is at Game Bar.
Where Steam fits in a PC capture workflow
Steam’s current support material in this area focuses on Steam Game Recording and exporting a saved clip as a video file. That documentation does not establish Steam as a universal still-image tool. If your game or launcher provides its own screenshot control, use that control when it best matches the game’s output and overlay behavior; otherwise, use Snipping Tool for desktop content or Game Bar for a supported game.
Do not substitute a video export for a still screenshot without checking the result. A frame extracted from a clip can have different resolution, timing, and compression characteristics from a native still capture.

Developer-only option: wdcapture.exe
Microsoft documents wdcapture.exe as a command-line tool that uses Windows Graphics Capture APIs. Its documented still outputs are PNG for SDR and JXR for HDR. This is intended for specialized developer workflows, testing, or automation rather than routine screenshots for a player’s library.
Because it is a development tool, it requires the relevant Windows development environment and command-line setup. Use Microsoft Learn’s current documentation for syntax and prerequisites: Screen Capture (wdcapture.exe). Do not choose it merely because a file format sounds more advanced; for normal desktop or game captures, the built-in tools are simpler to operate and verify.

A quality-preserving workflow that works on either platform
- Decide what must be visible. Choose a game frame, full screen, window, or selected region before opening the capture tool.
- Prepare the scene. Hide unnecessary HUD elements, wait for the desired animation state, and position the camera or window deliberately.
- Inspect native controls. On PS5, check Create > Capture Options. On Windows, choose the tool whose capture scope matches the content. Never assume a setting from another device carries over.
- Capture once, then verify. Open Media Gallery or the Windows capture result and confirm that the image is the intended frame.
- Save an untouched local original. On PS5, use Media Gallery and, when needed, Copy to USB Drive. On Windows, use Snipping Tool’s Save as or retain the Game Bar file in its local folder.
- Make a derivative for publication. Crop, rotate, add text, resize, or annotate a copy rather than overwriting the original.
- Choose the least lossy practical transfer. USB is the explicit PS5 physical-copy route. For app, message, or social sharing, check the downloaded result if the exact image matters.
- Keep filenames and dates meaningful. Include the game, scene, and capture date so an edited export cannot be confused with the preserved original.
Common problems and fixes
The PS5 screenshot does not look as sharp as expected
- Return to Create > Capture Options and inspect the format and resolution currently offered by the console.
- Check whether you are viewing a shared or edited derivative rather than the Media Gallery original.
- Use USB export for a direct physical copy instead of judging quality from a message or app preview.
- Remember that the game’s own rendered image and display output limit what the screenshot can contain; changing crop or adding text cannot create missing detail.
The desired PS5 capture is missing from the PlayStation App
- Confirm that the PS5 is linked to the app and that capture uploads are enabled.
- Check regional availability and whether the screenshot qualifies for automatic upload.
- Look within the 14-day availability period stated by PlayStation.
- If the image is important, copy it from Media Gallery to USB rather than waiting for app availability.
Sharing more than four PS5 screenshots
PlayStation’s documented limit is four screenshots per share. Send additional shares, or copy the captures to USB and create a separate collection on a computer or phone.

- Choose Window for a single application, Rectangular or Freeform for a defined area, and Full screen for the entire display.
- Use the delay control when a menu, tooltip, or transient overlay must be visible.
- If a game does not cooperate with a desktop snip, use Game Bar or the game’s own screenshot command.
Game Bar does not appear in a game
- Verify that Game Bar is enabled in Windows and that the game is one of the titles supported by the current setup.
- Try the camera/Take screenshot action from the capture widget again after the game has focus.
- Use the game’s own screenshot control or capture a window with Snipping Tool when the overlay remains unavailable.
An edited image no longer matches the original
Work from a duplicate. Keep the first saved PS5 or Windows file unchanged, then export a new copy after cropping, resizing, annotating, or uploading. This gives you a clean source for a later crop or a different sharing destination.
