Best Alternatives to the PS6 If Its Price Is Too High (2026 Guide)

For most buyers, the best alternative to an expensive or unavailable PS6 is the $599.99 PS5 Digital Edition. It keeps your PlayStation account, game library, accessories and first-party ecosystem, and Sony and Rockstar say Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 when it launches on November 19, 2026. Choose Xbox Series S if the lowest possible entry cost matters most, or Nintendo Switch 2 if portability and Nintendo software matter more than matching PlayStation graphics. If PS6-specific technology is the reason you are shopping, wait: Sony has not confirmed either its launch date or price.

What is actually known about PS6 pricing?

The PS6 does not have a confirmed U.S. price or release date. In a May 8, 2026 report on Sony’s financial-results call, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” That makes any specific PS6 price circulating online a forecast, not a Sony announcement.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Totoki also expected memory prices to remain very high in financial year 2027 because of a supply shortage. That does not establish a PS6 retail price, but it is a reason to treat confident price predictions cautiously. A future console could launch at a premium, arrive later than expected, or use different storage and memory configurations. None of those specifications has been finalized in the available evidence.

The practical question is therefore not “Which console is cheaper than the PS6?” No confirmed PS6 price exists for a reliable calculation. The useful question is: which current console gives you the games, ecosystem and form factor you want without making you pay for an unannounced upgrade?

Console or choice Published U.S. price or status Best reason to choose it Main compromise
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 MSRP from April 2, 2026 Closest PlayStation substitute; preserves account, library, accessories and ecosystem No confirmed PS6-specific features
PS5 with disc drive $649.99 MSRP from April 2, 2026 PlayStation continuity with the disc-based model $50 more than the Digital Edition
PS5 Pro $899.99 MSRP from April 2, 2026 Premium current-generation PlayStation option It is still current generation and costs substantially more than PS5 Digital Edition
Xbox Series S Xbox describes it as the lowest-cost current Xbox route; price not stated in the cited Xbox Wire announcement Lowest-cost route into Xbox console games, with used and certified-refurbished avenues Requires changing ecosystems and offers less hardware headroom than premium consoles
Nintendo Switch 2 $500 reported base price after a second increase Portability and Nintendo-exclusive software Not a direct PlayStation performance substitute; not automatically cheaper than PS5 Digital Edition
Wait for PS6 Price, timing and specifications not confirmed Keeps your budget available for the eventual new system You give up immediate access to current hardware and games

1. PS5 Digital Edition: the safest PlayStation alternative

The PS5 Digital Edition is the strongest choice for someone who already owns PlayStation games or accessories and is worried that a future PS6 could be too expensive. Sony’s updated U.S. recommended price is $599.99, effective April 2, 2026. That is a known purchase price for a current console, unlike every PS6 estimate.

Why it fits PlayStation owners

  • Your existing PlayStation account remains relevant instead of moving to another platform.
  • Your digital library and current-generation accessories stay within the same ecosystem, subject to each game’s and accessory’s compatibility rules.
  • You can play current PS5 releases now rather than waiting for an unannounced launch window.
  • Sony and Rockstar have positioned PS5 as the best place to play Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 19, 2026.

That last point matters if GTA VI is the game driving your purchase. Waiting for PS6 could leave you without a console for launch day, while buying a PS5 gives you a stated platform for the game.

When the Digital Edition is the right value

Choose it when you buy games digitally, want the lowest priced new PlayStation model, and do not need to use physical game discs. The $50 gap between the Digital Edition and the $649.99 disc PS5 is small relative to a console purchase, so calculate whether your expected disc purchases, used-game access or movie use justify the difference before deciding.

What it cannot provide

A PS5 cannot promise whatever new architecture, storage arrangement or features PS6 may eventually introduce. Sony has not published final PS6 specifications, so there is no responsible way to quantify the performance you would be giving up. Buy the PS5 for its current games and ecosystem, not on the assumption that it will match an unreleased system.

2. PS5 with a disc drive: pay more for physical-media flexibility

The disc PS5 costs $649.99 MSRP in the United States after Sony’s April 2, 2026 price update. It is the sensible alternative when you want PlayStation continuity but expect physical games to be part of your buying routine.

The decision is straightforward: the Digital Edition saves $50 upfront, while the disc model gives you the physical-media option. Compare the $50 premium with how often you buy discs, trade games, borrow them or buy used copies. If you already own a collection of PlayStation discs, the disc model avoids abandoning that investment. If your library is entirely digital, the cheaper model is easier to justify.

Both choices remain current-generation PS5 systems. Neither has a confirmed path to PS6 features, and neither should be purchased on the basis of an assumed PS6 launch date.

3. PS5 Pro: only for buyers who already want a premium PS5

The PS5 Pro’s U.S. MSRP is $899.99. It is a current-generation premium option, not a low-cost hedge against PS6 pricing. The $300 difference from PS5 Digital Edition is substantial, so it makes sense only if you have already decided that the premium PS5 experience is worth paying for today.

Do not choose PS5 Pro merely because you fear PS6 will be expensive. Sony has not said that PS6 will replace the Pro at a particular price, and there is no published PS6 specification against which to measure this model. If your priority is avoiding a large purchase, PS5 Digital Edition is the more coherent PlayStation recommendation.

4. Xbox Series S: the lowest-cost route into a console ecosystem

Xbox Wire calls Xbox Series S “the lowest-cost way for console players to enjoy the biggest hits this year.” The cited announcement does not provide a U.S. MSRP, so there is no supported dollar comparison with the $599.99 PS5 Digital Edition in this article. It does, however, identify Series S as Microsoft’s entry-level console route.

Ways to reduce the upfront cost

Xbox says previously played consoles and certified-refurbished units can lower the purchase price, with certified-refurbished consoles available for up to $100 off MSRP. Check the condition, warranty and return terms attached to a particular listing; “up to $100 off” is a maximum discount, not a promise that every unit will receive it.

The ecosystem trade-off

Series S is not a drop-in replacement for a PlayStation owner. You would move to Xbox accounts, Xbox versions of games and Xbox-compatible accessories. A PlayStation digital library does not become an Xbox library simply because both consoles play many of the same third-party releases.

The cited Xbox announcement does not provide a full comparative specification table. It is therefore safer to describe Series S as a lower-cost, less headroom-oriented option than premium consoles rather than assign it a precise performance ranking. Check the requirements of the games you care about and the storage arrangement of the exact package before buying.

Who should choose Series S?

  • Buy it if your first priority is entering the current console market for as little as possible.
  • Prefer a used or certified-refurbished unit when the seller’s warranty and return policy are clear.
  • Choose it when you are comfortable leaving the PlayStation account and accessory ecosystem.
  • Do not choose it solely to preserve a PlayStation library; PS5 is the continuity option.

5. Nintendo Switch 2: a different kind of alternative

GamesRadar+ reported a $500 base price for Nintendo Switch 2 after a second price increase. That puts the base system below the $599.99 PS5 Digital Edition by $99.99, but price alone does not make it a cheaper PS6 substitute. Switch 2 is primarily an alternative in portability and software, not a direct PlayStation performance replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Switch 2 makes more sense than PS5

  • You need a portable system rather than a console designed mainly for television play.
  • Nintendo’s first-party catalog is more important to you than PlayStation’s catalog.
  • You accept a different approach to graphics, services, accounts and accessories.
  • You want a $500 reported base price and are willing to verify the current retail amount before ordering.

If your goal is to play PlayStation exclusives, retain a PlayStation library or prepare specifically for GTA VI on the platform Sony and Rockstar identify, Switch 2 does not solve that problem. It is a strong alternative only when its form factor and Nintendo software are the reason you are buying a console.

6. Waiting: the correct choice when PS6 features are non-negotiable

Waiting is rational when you do not need a console immediately and the main attraction is PS6 itself. Sony has not finalized timing, price or specifications, so keeping the money in your budget preserves the ability to evaluate the real announcement instead of buying a stopgap you may soon replace.

What waiting costs you

  • You cannot use a current console for games you want to play now.
  • You may miss the PS5 launch platform for GTA VI on November 19, 2026.
  • A future PS6 price could be higher than your current budget, especially if memory costs remain elevated.
  • There is no confirmed launch date to put on your calendar.

Set a personal trigger for buying: for example, purchase PS5 when a must-play game arrives, or wait until Sony publishes the PS6 price and launch timing. That turns uncertainty into a deliberate choice rather than indefinite postponement.

Storage, performance and accessory checks before you buy

The available announcements do not establish final PS6 storage, memory or performance specifications, and the Xbox announcement does not provide a complete cross-console specification table. Avoid making a purchase from an invented teraflop, storage or frame-rate comparison.

Instead, use this checklist for the exact console package you are considering:

  • Library: list the games you already own and identify which platform they support.
  • Accessories: verify whether your headset, controller, camera or other hardware is compatible with the new console.
  • Storage: check the listed capacity and the install sizes of your regular games; do not assume two consoles with similar prices provide the same usable space.
  • Performance target: identify whether you care most about resolution, frame rate, loading time or simply access to a specific game. A lower-cost system can be suitable when its game support meets your target.
  • Physical media: choose a disc model only when you will use discs or need access to an existing collection.
  • Condition: for used or refurbished hardware, confirm warranty length, return window, included cables and controller condition.

A practical buying sequence

  1. Set a hard budget. Use the published U.S. MSRP you can afford rather than an unconfirmed PS6 rumor.
  2. Write down your must-play games. If they are PlayStation titles or GTA VI, start with PS5. If portability and Nintendo software dominate, start with Switch 2.
  3. Decide whether your existing library matters. Continuity favors PS5; changing ecosystems may make Series S cheaper upfront but more expensive if you must repurchase games or accessories.
  4. Choose physical or digital purchasing. The $599.99 Digital Edition and $649.99 disc PS5 differ by $50 in U.S. MSRP.
  5. Check new, used and certified-refurbished listings. Xbox cites up to $100 off MSRP for certified-refurbished consoles, but inspect the terms for the unit you find.
  6. Verify the exact bundle and region. Prices in this guide are U.S. figures; retailer bundles and regional pricing can differ.
  7. Buy now only if it solves a current need. If the real goal is PS6 technology, keep waiting for Sony’s confirmed announcement.

Common mistakes to avoid

Treating a rumored PS6 price as a fact

Sony has not announced a price or timing. A rumor can help you set a private savings target, but it cannot support a factual claim that PS6 will cost a particular amount.

Assuming the cheapest sticker price is the cheapest ownership path

Switching from PlayStation to Xbox can mean replacing digital games and accessories. The lower console price may not produce the lower total cost for someone with a large PlayStation library.

Buying PS5 Pro as a “future-proof” bargain

At $899.99, PS5 Pro is the most expensive current PlayStation model listed here. It is a premium purchase for current-generation benefits, not evidence that PS6 will be affordable or compatible with it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing Switch 2 solely because $500 is below $599.99

The reported $500 Switch 2 price is lower than PS5 Digital Edition, but the systems target different experiences. Portability and Nintendo exclusives must be part of the decision.

Bottom line: which alternative should you buy?

Buy the PS5 Digital Edition when you want the least disruptive replacement for an expensive PS6 idea, especially if GTA VI and your existing PlayStation ecosystem matter. Select the disc PS5 when physical games justify its $649.99 price. Choose Xbox Series S when minimizing the entry cost matters more than retaining PlayStation purchases, and investigate certified-refurbished or previously played units. Choose Switch 2 when portability and Nintendo software are the point of the purchase. Choose PS5 Pro only when you specifically want a premium PS5 now. Otherwise, wait for Sony to publish the PS6’s real price, timing and specifications.
