There is no single, shared reading order for Brian K. Vaughan’s major comics. Saga, Y: The Last Man, Paper Girls, Ex Machina, Runaways and Pride of Baghdad are separate works, published through different lines and formats. Start with the series or graphic novel that matches your interests, then read that work from its first issue or first numbered collection onward.
If you want one practical route through Vaughan’s bibliography, use an editorial sampler rather than a supposed universe chronology: begin with Y: The Last Man or Runaways, then sample Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Saga and Paper Girls. You do not need to read Saga before Paper Girls, or either one before the other.

The correct answer: read each major work in its own sequence
“In order” can mean two different things. Within a series, it means starting at issue one (or the first collection) and following the numbered issues or books. Across Vaughan’s career, it means publication chronology. The first kind of order is clear and necessary. The second is optional, because the major works do not form one continuous storyline.
Vaughan has written creator-owned series for Image, work published through DC, and standalone graphic novels. A character, event or plot from one of those lines does not require knowledge of the others. Publisher catalogs present the books as separate series or volumes, and none of the reviewed listings prescribes a crossover chronology.

The table below gives the simplest starting point for each major work.
| Work | Start here | How to continue | Publication status or format note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saga | Issue #1 or the first numbered collected edition | Follow issue numbers or collected volumes | Ongoing series by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples; Image catalogs numbered issues and multiple collection formats |
| Y: The Last Man | Book One | Read the numbered books in sequence, or use the omnibus | Book One collects issues #1–10; the long series is available in numbered books, deluxe editions and an omnibus |
| Paper Girls | The first issue or Paper Girls: The Complete Story | Continue through the collected story in publication order | A completed 784-page trade paperback edition was published November 2, 2021 |
| Ex Machina | The first volume | Read the volumes in order, or choose the complete-series omnibus | DC and Penguin Random House list a complete-series omnibus |
| Pride of Baghdad | The first page | No sequel or preceding Vaughan volume is required | Standalone graphic novel |
| Runaways | The beginning of Vaughan’s run | Follow the publication or collection sequence for that run | A longer shared-universe series; it is not part of the continuity of Vaughan’s creator-owned Image works |
Series-by-series reading order
Saga
Begin with Saga issue #1, or pick up the first numbered trade paperback if you prefer collected comics. Then move through the numbered issues or volumes without inserting another Vaughan title between them. The series is written by Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples, and Image’s catalog identifies it as an ongoing series with both individual issues and collected editions.
Do not treat the currently collected material as a finished story. Image’s creator and series listings included Saga #72, dated March 19, 2025, along with later numbered trades. That catalog activity establishes continued publication; it does not provide a final-series date. If you are buying in print, check the numbering on each volume so that a later trade is not mistaken for a conclusion.

Y: The Last Man
The cleanest entry point is Y: The Last Man Book One. DC specifies that this book collects issues #1 through #10, giving a defined beginning rather than dropping you into a mid-run collection. Continue with the subsequent numbered books in order.
Readers who want fewer physical books can use the omnibus edition instead. The same DC catalog lists the other numbered books, deluxe editions and omnibus formats, so the choice is one of packaging and portability rather than a different story order. Whichever edition you choose, keep the volumes in numerical sequence; the omnibus does not require a separate Vaughan reading list.
Paper Girls
Read Paper Girls from its beginning. If you want the entire completed story in one purchase, the publisher lists Paper Girls: The Complete Story, a 784-page trade paperback published November 2, 2021. Its ISBN is 9781534319998. The book is written by Vaughan with art by Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson.

The complete-story edition removes the need to track individual issues or separate trades. If you already own standard collections, simply read those volumes from the first number onward; there is no prerequisite Vaughan series and no tie-in order to follow.

Start with the first Ex Machina volume and continue numerically. For readers who prefer a single consolidated edition, DC and Penguin Random House list Ex Machina: The Complete Series Omnibus. An omnibus is a format shortcut: it gathers the run in one large book, while the numbered volumes divide the same reading sequence into smaller purchases.
Do not place Ex Machina between particular Saga or Y: The Last Man books to create a fictional crossover. Its order is internal to the title.
Pride of Baghdad
Pride of Baghdad is a standalone graphic novel. You can read it at any point in your Vaughan exploration, including before starting one of the long series. It has no volume-one prerequisite and does not need to be synchronized with Runaways, Saga or the other creator-owned works.
Runaways
For Runaways, begin at the start of Vaughan’s run and use the publication or collection sequence for that run. The series belongs to a shared superhero universe, so its continuity is different from the creator-owned Image books. A reader moving from Runaways to Saga is changing series, publisher context and fictional universe; no bridge volume is required.

Because Runaways has a longer publication history beyond Vaughan’s initial contribution, decide whether you want only his run or the wider series. If your goal is to read Vaughan’s work, stop after the collections credited to his run; if your goal is the characters’ full publication history, continue with later runs in their own numbered order.

Do you need a Vaughan-wide chronology?
No. A career chronology can be enjoyable, but it is a tour through changing genres and formats, not a canonical sequence. The publisher catalogs establish the works and their collections, but they do not reconstruct every issue-level date across Vaughan’s complete bibliography. That makes a precise, all-credits timeline less useful for a first-time reader than a series-by-series plan.
If you want a broad introduction, use this optional sampler:
- Begin with Y: The Last Man Book One or the start of Runaways. These provide a substantial early look at Vaughan’s long-form storytelling while keeping you inside one clear sequence.
- Sample Ex Machina. Read its first volume, or use the complete-series omnibus if you already know you want the entire run.
- Read Pride of Baghdad. Its standalone structure gives you a complete graphic novel without committing to another multi-volume series.
- Try Saga. Start at issue #1 or its first trade and continue only if an ongoing series suits you.
- Finish the sampler with Paper Girls. The complete-story trade lets you read the finished series without assembling separate volumes.
This route is an editorial way to experience different parts of Vaughan’s bibliography. It is not a required order, an official chronology or a shared-universe reading list.

The same story can be bought as single issues, standard trades, deluxe hardcovers, compendiums or an omnibus. Choose based on how you read rather than assuming that the largest book is automatically best.
| Format | Best for | Trade-offs | Examples in Vaughan’s catalog |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single issues | Readers who want the original release rhythm and issue-by-issue pacing | More items to locate and store; gaps can interrupt the sequence | Numbered Saga issues |
| Standard trade paperback | Portable reading and buying one story segment at a time | You must track volume numbers and may need several books | Y: The Last Man numbered books; Paper Girls: The Complete Story |
| Deluxe hardcover | Readers who want a durable shelf edition and larger physical package | Heavier and usually less convenient to carry | Deluxe editions are listed for Y: The Last Man; Image also catalogs deluxe Saga collections |
| Compendium | Readers who want a large section of a long series in fewer purchases | Large, heavy binding; page turns are less comfortable than in a trade | Image catalogs a Saga compendium |
| Omnibus | Readers who want a consolidated run in one purchase | Heaviest option and less portable; verify the contents before buying | Y: The Last Man omnibus; Ex Machina: The Complete Series Omnibus |
Publisher listings confirm that these formats exist, but prices, stock and regional availability change. Treat a retailer’s current listing as the authority for what you can buy today, and compare the contents page rather than relying only on a cover image.
Cost, portability and completeness
There is no single cheapest or best format for every title, and current prices were not established in the publisher listings. Instead, compare what each purchase accomplishes. Single issues spread spending across many smaller purchases but require more searching and storage. Standard trades let you buy a story section at a time and are easier to carry, though a long series requires several volumes. A compendium, deluxe edition or omnibus reduces the number of separate books, but the larger upfront purchase is heavier and less portable.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Completeness matters as much as sticker price. A complete-story or complete-series label can prevent duplicate buying when you want an entire finished run. Check the contents page for issue or volume coverage, especially when similarly titled editions appear in a retailer search. A newer-looking cover does not by itself prove that the book contains more material.
For Paper Girls, the 784-page Complete Story is the clearest one-volume option. For Y: The Last Man, compare the numbered books with the omnibus or deluxe packaging. For Ex Machina, the complete-series omnibus is the consolidated choice. Image’s catalog shows that Saga has trades, a compendium and deluxe editions, so readers can choose between incremental purchases and larger collected blocks.
A quick decision tree
- Want one finished book? Choose Paper Girls: The Complete Story or the standalone Pride of Baghdad.
- Want a long completed series with a clearly marked first book? Start with Y: The Last Man Book One.
- Want an entire collected run in one large edition? Look at the Ex Machina complete-series omnibus.
- Want an ongoing space-fantasy series? Begin Saga at issue #1 or its first trade, knowing that the collected publication continues.
- Want superhero characters in a shared universe? Follow Vaughan’s Runaways collections from the beginning of his run.
This decision tree is about entry points and format preferences, not a ranking of quality. Any of these choices can be your first Vaughan book, and none creates homework for the others.
Publication chronology versus reading order
A publication-oriented tour can add context: you can watch Vaughan move among creator-owned science fiction, political drama, time-travel adventure, superhero comics and a self-contained graphic novel. However, a strict chronology would need every issue date, short story, guest appearance and credit identified consistently. The major publisher pages do not provide that complete all-credits timeline.
Use publication chronology only as a personal organizing principle. For example, you might read an early long-form entry, sample another publisher’s series, pause for Pride of Baghdad, then try the later-feeling experience of Saga or the completed Paper Girls. The order creates variety for the reader; it does not reveal hidden links between fictional worlds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical setup for staying in order
- Pick one title before buying. Decide whether you want an ongoing series, a completed series, a standalone book or a shared-universe run.
- Identify the entry edition. Look for “Book One,” “Volume 1,” “Complete Story” or “Complete Series Omnibus.” Do not begin with a later numbered trade simply because it is the copy currently on a shelf.
- Check the contents page. Confirm the issue range or volume range inside the book. For example, Y: The Last Man Book One should identify issues #1–10.
- Choose one format path. Mixing single issues, trades and an omnibus is possible, but record the last issue or volume you finished so that overlapping material is not purchased or reread accidentally.
- Keep separate lists for separate series. A checklist for Saga should not be used to track Runaways; their numbering and continuity are independent.
- Recheck availability before completing a set. Publisher catalogs can be updated, and retailer stock varies by country and date. A missing trade may have a different regional release or a newer collected edition.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming every Vaughan comic shares one universe: The major works come from different publishing contexts. Read each title’s own sequence.
- Calling Saga complete: The catalog lists issue #72 dated March 19, 2025 and later collections, so it should be treated as ongoing rather than assigned a final reading volume.
- Starting Y: The Last Man in the middle: Use Book One, which collects issues #1–10, then move through the numbered books.
- Confusing a format with a new continuity: An omnibus, compendium or deluxe edition repackages collected material. It does not create a separate storyline.
- Expecting a complete career bibliography: This guide covers the major works named above, not every guest appearance, short story or brief credit Vaughan has accumulated.
- Using an unverified “publication order” list: A complete issue-level chronology across all credits is not established by the publisher listings used here. Treat any cross-title route as optional curation, not canon.
Frequently asked questions

Where should I start with Brian K. Vaughan?
Choose based on format and genre. Start with Paper Girls: The Complete Story for one finished volume, Y: The Last Man Book One for a clearly numbered long series, Pride of Baghdad for a standalone graphic novel, Ex Machina’s first volume or omnibus for a complete collected run, Saga for an ongoing series, or the beginning of Vaughan’s Runaways run for shared-universe superhero comics.

Do I need to read Saga before Paper Girls?
No. They are separate series with separate characters, settings and reading sequences. Start either one at its first issue or first collection.
Is there one Brian K. Vaughan universe reading order?
No required cross-title order has been established. Saga, Y: The Last Man, Paper Girls, Ex Machina and Pride of Baghdad can be read independently. Runaways has shared-superhero continuity, but it does not connect those creator-owned works.
Is Saga finished?
Treat it as ongoing. Image’s catalog listed Saga #72, dated March 19, 2025, as well as later numbered collected editions. Start at issue #1 and follow the available issue or trade numbering rather than looking for a final volume.
What does Y: The Last Man Book One contain?
DC identifies Book One as collecting issues #1–10. Continue with the numbered books, or choose the omnibus or deluxe format if you prefer a consolidated edition.
Can I read Paper Girls in one book?
Yes. Paper Girls: The Complete Story is listed as a 784-page trade paperback published November 2, 2021, with ISBN 9781534319998. It collects the completed story in one volume.
Which edition is best for collecting the complete story?
For Paper Girls, use The Complete Story. For Ex Machina, consider the complete-series omnibus. For Y: The Last Man, compare the omnibus with the numbered books and deluxe editions. For Saga, choose among trades, the compendium and deluxe editions according to weight, portability and budget; its publication remains ongoing.
Do omnibus and deluxe editions change the reading order?
No. They repackage the same sequence in a different physical format. Check the contents page to confirm coverage, then read from the first included issue or story onward.
