For a DIY desktop build, the Ryzen 7 8700G is the strongest documented pick in AMD’s Ryzen 8000G lineup by published specifications: it combines 8 cores and 16 threads with Radeon 780M integrated graphics. AMD’s newer Ryzen AI 400 desktop chips are a separate option, announced for OEM-built AM5 systems; AMD expected those systems from Q2 2026, but that forecast alone does not confirm current availability or a boxed DIY launch.
Which AMD Ryzen APU should you choose in 2026?
- Best documented DIY choice: Ryzen 7 8700G, for its 8-core/16-thread CPU and Radeon 780M graphics.
- Lower-cost 8000G option by launch-price positioning: Ryzen 5 8600G, with 6 cores, 12 threads and Radeon 760M graphics. Its $229 figure was AMD’s suggested launch price in 2024, not a current price.
- Newer AI-focused route: Ryzen AI 400 desktop processors, if you find an actual OEM AM5 system that suits your needs. AMD’s announcement described OEM systems expected from Q2 2026; it does not establish present-day stock.
These are specification-based distinctions, not a measured gaming ranking. The available information does not include independent 2026 head-to-head benchmarks, so graphics specifications alone cannot establish which chip delivers the highest frame rate in a particular game.
How the Ryzen APU options compare
AMD’s Ryzen 8000G family is a Zen 4 AM5 desktop lineup. Ryzen AI 400 is a separate 2026 announcement with G (65W) and GE (35W) variants, and an announced route through OEM systems. The table separates published specs from launch pricing and availability caveats.
| Exact model | Platform / route to market | CPU cores / threads | Integrated graphics | TDP | NPU | Price / availability caveat |

AMD also lists Ryzen AI 400 G and GE desktop variants with different core, graphics, cache and NPU specifications. Check the exact model and system configuration rather than treating the family name as a single specification.

Best Ryzen APU for gaming: Ryzen 7 8700G, with an important caveat
Among the cited Ryzen 8000G DIY choices, the 8700G has the highest listed integrated-graphics tier, Radeon 780M, alongside an 8-core/16-thread CPU. That makes it the straightforward spec-based pick when gaming on integrated graphics is the priority. AMD described the 780M as the fastest built-in graphics available in a desktop processor in its 2024 announcement; that is AMD’s own claim, not an independently verified current ranking.
There are no independent head-to-head gaming results established here for the 8700G, 8600G, 8500G and Ryzen AI 400 models. Actual frame rates depend on the game, resolution, settings, memory configuration and system. Do not treat a higher graphics-model number or an NPU TOPS figure as proof of a gaming-performance lead.

Who should buy each option?
Choose the Ryzen 7 8700G for an integrated-graphics-first DIY PC
It is the clearest fit if you want a documented DIY desktop APU and the strongest listed graphics tier in the 8000G range. AMD lists 8 cores, 16 threads, a 5.1 GHz boost, Radeon 780M graphics and 65W TDP. Its $329 suggested launch price dates to 2024 and should not be used as a stand-in for today’s retail price.
Choose the Ryzen 5 8600G for a lower 8000G tier
The 8600G pairs a 6-core/12-thread CPU with Radeon 760M graphics at 65W. It is a step below the 8700G in AMD’s listed integrated-graphics tier and CPU core count. Whether it is the better buy depends on the current price where you shop and the performance your games and applications need; its $229 suggested launch price is historical.
Rank #3
- Pure gaming performance with smooth 100+ FPS in the world's most popular games
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 38 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included
Consider the Ryzen 5 8500G when the Radeon 740M tier is enough
AMD lists the 8500G with 6 cores, 12 threads, Radeon 740M graphics and a 65W TDP, and says it lacks Ryzen AI. It may suit a build that does not need the 8700G’s higher listed graphics tier, but the cited facts do not establish current pricing or comparative game performance.
Consider Ryzen AI 400 when shopping for a complete OEM system
The Ryzen AI 7 450G is notable for its Radeon 860M graphics, 8 CPU cores and 16 threads, and NPU rated up to 50 TOPS. AMD framed the family around desktop AI acceleration and announced OEM systems rather than confirming a boxed DIY processor launch. Check that a complete system is actually listed, and assess whether its NPU features matter to your workloads before choosing it.

What to check before buying
- Route to market: The 8000G models are documented as DIY desktop products. For Ryzen AI 400, verify a real OEM system listing, its configuration, price and availability.
- Graphics workload: Match the integrated graphics tier to the games and settings you intend to use. Published GPU names do not replace comparable benchmark results.
- CPU needs: Compare cores and threads against your non-gaming workloads as well as gaming. More cores do not by themselves establish a game-performance winner.
- Power: The listed 8000G models above are 65W; Ryzen AI 400 includes both 65W G and 35W GE variants, so check the exact model in any system.
- Discrete GPU plans: If you will install a discrete graphics card immediately, integrated graphics may matter less to your choice. The available facts do not establish which non-APU processor is the better value at current prices.
- Price and stock: Treat the 8700G’s $329 and 8600G’s $229 as AMD suggested launch prices from 2024, not current offers. Confirm live retail or system pricing before deciding.
