ClamAV is the best starting point for most Linux servers that need open-source, scriptable malware scanning. Choose ESET Server Security for Linux or Sophos Protection for Linux when you need a supported commercial agent and management console. Choose Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux when your organization already licenses Microsoft security services and can meet its server-licensing and Fanotify requirements.
The right answer depends on the workload, distribution, kernel, file systems, need for real-time protection, management model and licensing. A hardened server with a narrow role may gain more from least privilege, patching and integrity monitoring than from a permanently active antivirus process; mail gateways, file shares and systems exchanging files with Windows hosts are much stronger candidates for malware scanning.

Do Linux servers need antivirus?
Linux malware exists, but antivirus is not automatically the first control every server needs. A single-purpose, internet-facing service should start with a minimal image, timely security updates, strong authentication, network restrictions, least-privilege service accounts, backups and file-integrity or audit monitoring. Antivirus adds value when the server handles untrusted files or when an organization needs a centrally enforced detection and response policy.
Cases where scanning is usually worthwhile
- Mail gateways: scanning attachments before they reach users reduces the chance that a Linux mail system becomes a delivery point for malware targeting other platforms.
- File shares and collaboration servers: shared directories can hold Windows executables, Office documents, archives and scripts that are later opened on employee devices.
- Upload and download services: web applications, FTP replacements and CI systems that receive files from outside the organization benefit from scanning at the trust boundary.
- Mixed-platform networks: a Linux host may not be the final target, but it can store or relay malware for Windows and macOS clients.
- Compliance and incident response: a managed agent can provide policy enforcement, telemetry and quarantine records that a scheduled command-line scan does not.
When another control may come first
A database server that accepts only authenticated application traffic and never handles user files may gain little from aggressive on-access scanning. Installing several agents “just in case” can increase CPU, memory and I/O use, create Fanotify conflicts and make troubleshooting harder. Decide what the server can receive, where files cross trust boundaries and what evidence your security team must retain before selecting an engine.

What to check before choosing an antivirus agent
Distribution, architecture and kernel
Linux support is not a single yes-or-no feature. A product may support one release of Ubuntu or Red Hat Enterprise Linux while excluding a derivative, an older kernel, a non-x86 architecture or a hardened kernel configuration. Record the exact distribution and version, CPU architecture, running kernel, init system, file systems and container technology. Then match that inventory against the vendor’s current support table. Do not infer support from a tutorial written for another release.
On-access protection versus scheduled scanning
On-access protection examines files as they are opened, created or modified. It can stop a malicious file earlier, but it also places a monitoring path on every relevant file operation. Scheduled or on-demand scans are easier to isolate to a maintenance window and are often sufficient for an archive, backup staging area or mail spool when files are scanned before delivery. Confirm whether the product can exclude database files, virtual-machine disks, backup repositories and other high-I/O paths without creating a blind spot.
Management and response
Command-line tools are useful for automation, but a large fleet usually needs a console for policy, health, signature status, detections, quarantine and role-based access. Check whether the console can isolate a host, collect investigation data, run a scan and export audit records. These capabilities vary by product edition and license; do not assume that a standalone Linux package includes the same response functions as an enterprise subscription.
Resource and I/O overhead
Measure CPU, resident memory, scan throughput and application latency on a representative workload. A recursive scan of a multi-terabyte file share can compete with users even when average CPU use appears low because metadata and storage I/O become the bottleneck. Schedule full scans outside peak hours, throttle where supported and exclude files that cannot be meaningfully inspected, such as database internals, only after documenting an alternate protection control.
Updates, lifecycle and conflicts
Determine how the engine receives signatures and software updates when the server has restricted internet access. Plan a repository, proxy or offline update path and alert on stale definitions. Also inventory backup agents, endpoint detection tools, FAPolicyD and other Fanotify users. Microsoft specifically warns that two Fanotify-based security solutions in blocking mode are unsupported and can cause unpredictable behavior, including system hangs.
ClamAV: the open-source baseline
ClamAV is a cross-platform, open-source toolkit rather than a fully managed commercial endpoint suite. It is a strong choice when administrators want transparent command-line control, integration with mail or file workflows and scheduled scanning that can be built into existing scripts.

What it provides
- ClamScan: a command-line scanner suitable for manual checks and scheduled jobs.
- ClamD: a daemon that keeps the scanning engine available for applications and automation, reducing the startup cost of repeated scans.
- ClamOnAcc: Linux on-access scanning. ClamAV’s documentation states that on-access is available only on Linux systems and explains how watched files are scanned through clamd permissions.
- Signature updates: the standard Cisco signature database can be updated through the supported update mechanism, which administrators must monitor and secure.
Memory and design requirements
ClamAV’s Linux server documentation recommends at least 3 GiB of RAM for editions using ClamScan or ClamD with the standard signature database. Treat that as a sizing floor, not a performance guarantee: concurrent scans, large archives, decompression and application workload can require more memory. A production design also needs a quarantine directory, alert destination, retention policy, update monitoring and a decision about what happens when scanning fails.

Use ClamAV for a mail gateway that scans attachments, a file server that runs controlled scans on shared directories, or a server where scheduled inspection is acceptable and the team can own the surrounding automation. Its flexibility is also its limitation: you must build the policy, alerting, quarantine workflow, access controls and performance limits yourself. If the organization needs a vendor-managed console, host isolation or turnkey response, a commercial agent is usually a better fit.
ESET Server Security for Linux
ESET is the commercial option for teams that want a supported Linux server product within a broader endpoint portfolio. ESET’s current-version information lists Endpoint Antivirus for Linux 13.2.3.0, released June 30, 2026, with a Full Support status. That version label is for the endpoint product; confirm the exact Server Security for Linux release and licensing terms before deployment.
Supported platforms to verify
Published ESET Linux material lists support that includes Alma Linux 8 and 9, Rocky Linux 8 and 9, Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. The list is not a substitute for checking the current release notes: kernel, architecture, file-system and management-console compatibility can differ by product version.
When ESET is the practical choice
- Your security team requires vendor support for the Linux agent.
- You want Linux servers represented in the same endpoint policy and reporting program as other systems.
- You need more than a scanner, such as centralized health, detections and policy controls.
- You can standardize server images on distributions and kernels in the support matrix.
Before rollout, test the agent with database, backup and virtualization workloads. Confirm exclusions, update routing and the effect of on-access protection on the busiest file paths. Pricing is license- and edition-dependent, so obtain a server-specific quote rather than applying desktop assumptions.

Do not follow legacy installation guides
Sophos states that customers using Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux must migrate to the Sophos Protection for Linux agent by using the current “Download Linux Server Installer” option. Older commands and repository instructions can install a retired product, fail on a current kernel or leave the host outside the supported console.
Check the distribution and kernel matrix
Sophos publishes a support matrix with distribution and kernel details. Check the exact server image, architecture and kernel build before creating a deployment package. If the server uses a custom kernel, delay enforcement until compatibility is confirmed and a rollback path is tested. The managed approach is valuable, but it does not remove the need to test I/O-heavy services and coordinate exclusions with backup and storage teams.
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux is a strong fit for organizations already using Microsoft security operations, Azure or Defender for Servers. It places Linux telemetry, policy and response in Microsoft’s management ecosystem instead of creating a separate console.

Microsoft requires a server license. Documented routes include Defender for Servers Plan 1 or Plan 2, Defender for Endpoint for servers and Defender for Business servers. Microsoft’s minimum documented resources are one CPU core, 2 GB of disk space and 1 GB of RAM. Those figures describe installation requirements, not the capacity needed for high-volume scans or a busy production host.
Distribution coverage and a dated exception
Microsoft’s support information covers major distributions including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu LTS, Debian, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Oracle Linux, Amazon Linux, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Fedora and Mariner. Amazon Linux 2 on ARM64 is scheduled to lose Defender support on October 31, 2026. If that platform is in your fleet, plan a migration or a different protection strategy before the retirement date.
Fanotify conflict warning
Defender uses Linux file-notification mechanisms for protection. Microsoft warns: “Running Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux alongside other Fanotify-based security solutions isn’t supported and may lead to unpredictable behavior, including system hangs.” Do not place Defender and another blocking Fanotify agent on the same host without a vendor-validated design. If coexistence is unavoidable, use a documented passive mode or exception strategy, test under load and monitor for hangs and missed detections.

Deployment plan for a Linux server antivirus agent
1. Inventory the host
- Record the distribution and release, architecture, kernel version, file systems and container runtime.
- List services that read or write files, including mail queues, shared folders, databases, backup repositories and virtual-machine images.
- Identify existing Fanotify users, FAPolicyD rules, endpoint agents, backup filters and file-integrity tools.
- Classify data paths by trust level and business criticality so exclusions are deliberate rather than copied from a generic guide.
2. Select the protection mode
Choose scheduled scans when the workload is predictable and real-time interception would create unacceptable latency. Choose on-access protection for untrusted uploads, mail attachments and shared folders where a file can be opened immediately by another host. A hybrid design is common: on-access scanning at the ingress path, plus scheduled scans of repositories and periodic full-host checks.
Recommended Free Tools
3. Validate compatibility in staging
- Clone the production image or create a representative test host with the same kernel and storage layout.
- Install the current agent or ClamAV packages from the supported source.
- Exercise peak file operations, backup jobs, database maintenance and failover procedures.
- Measure latency, CPU, memory, disk I/O and scan queue depth.
- Test detection, quarantine, alert delivery, signature updates and clean removal.
4. Define exclusions and recovery
Exclude only paths that cannot be scanned safely or where the vendor explicitly recommends exclusion. Record the reason, owner and compensating control for each exclusion. Decide how administrators restore a quarantined file, how false positives are approved and how the server behaves when the update service or scanning daemon is unavailable.
5. Roll out gradually
Start with a non-critical server, then expand by workload class rather than installing everywhere at once. Monitor agent health, stale signatures, detection volume, application errors and kernel messages. Keep a tested uninstall or passive-mode procedure so a performance regression does not become an outage.
Common problems and fixes
High CPU or storage latency
Check whether a full scan overlaps with backups, database maintenance or user activity. Narrow the scan scope, schedule it during a maintenance window, throttle it where supported and review archive recursion. Do not simply disable protection on the entire host.
Files are missed on a shared directory
Verify that the watched mount and its file system are supported, that the scanning daemon can read the directory and that permissions allow the on-access component to inspect files. For ClamAV, review ClamOnAcc watches and clamd permissions. Add a controlled scheduled scan as a backstop while the event path is corrected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTwo security agents interfere
Look for Fanotify registrations, duplicate quarantine actions and kernel warnings. Microsoft does not support multiple Fanotify-based blocking solutions together. Remove the overlap, place one agent in passive mode if the vendor supports that design, or move protection to a different layer after validating the change.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Updates fail on an isolated server
Provide an approved proxy, internal mirror or offline update process. Alert when signatures or engine packages exceed the organization’s maximum age. A scanner with stale definitions can create false confidence even when its service appears healthy.
The installer rejects the kernel
Stop deployment and compare the exact kernel build, distribution point release and architecture with the vendor’s current matrix. Do not force-load an unsupported module on a production server. Upgrade the image, use a supported kernel or choose a product that explicitly covers the platform.
Recommendations by workload
Mail gateway
ClamAV is a practical baseline when the mail stack can call ClamD or ClamScan and the team can manage quarantine and alerts. A commercial agent is preferable when the organization needs central policy, vendor support and evidence across many gateways.
File server or collaboration share
Use on-access protection on directories where users or external systems can introduce files, and schedule deeper scans during low-traffic periods. Test locking behavior and throughput before enabling recursive monitoring across a large share.
Web upload or download service
Scan at the upload boundary before making an object available to another user or system. Record the scan result with the object identifier, enforce size and archive limits and keep the application from treating a scanner timeout as a clean result.
Highly restricted application server
Start with hardening, patch management, least privilege, network segmentation, integrity monitoring and reliable backups. Add antivirus when policy, compliance or the server’s file flows justify it, and keep the agent’s exclusions and performance impact under review.
Microsoft-centered security operations
Defender for Endpoint on Linux is the natural candidate when the organization already owns the required server licensing and uses Microsoft’s portal for investigation. Confirm distribution lifecycle, resource capacity and Fanotify coexistence before enabling blocking mode.
Bottom line
Choose ClamAV when you need an open-source scanning foundation and can operate the surrounding automation. Choose ESET Server Security for Linux or Sophos Protection for Linux when supported commercial management is the priority, using only current packages and verified platform matrices. Choose Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux when Microsoft licensing and centralized response outweigh the complexity of its server requirements. In every case, match the agent to the server’s exact kernel and workload, test I/O impact, and treat antivirus as one layer alongside patching, least privilege, segmentation, backups and integrity monitoring.
