Pligg is the legacy name most administrators remember for the open-source news and user-feedback CMS now maintained in the Kliqqi project. The project identifies itself as “Kliqqi formerly known as Pligg CMS.” You can still deploy it on an Ubuntu VPS, but treat the installation as a compatibility project: the release page shows version 2.0.2 as the newest listed release, while the commonly copied VPS tutorial targets 2.0.1 and does not establish a current Ubuntu or PHP support matrix.

The safest approach is to build a disposable staging VPS first, install a conventional Apache, MySQL-compatible database and PHP stack, run the browser installer, and only then decide whether the exact Ubuntu/PHP combination is suitable for production. The procedure below keeps the application’s writable paths limited, removes the installer after setup, and gives you a rollback-conscious upgrade path.

Plan the deployment as four layers: an Ubuntu server, a web server, a database service and the PHP runtime that connects them. The Pligg-specific instructions assume a LAMP server, while Ubuntu’s PHP documentation separates the roles of Apache, PHP, the Apache PHP module and the MySQL PHP extension.
Server and access requirements
- An Ubuntu VPS image with SSH access and enough disk space for the operating system, web files, uploaded avatars, logs and database backups.
- A non-root administrative account with
sudo. Use root only for initial account and system administration, not for routine web work. - A firewall allowing SSH and web traffic, plus a backup destination that is independent of the VPS.
- A DNS name if the site will be public. You can complete the installer with an IP address, but a stable hostname makes later HTTPS and cookie configuration easier.
Choose a release deliberately
The Kliqqi release page currently displays 2.0.2 as the latest release shown. Its notes mention a security fix, Bootstrap 3.2.0 and FontAwesome 4.1.0 updates; the captured page gives a release date of 16 August without exposing a year. A historical VPS guide downloads 2.0.1. Do not copy that old version number automatically: select the release artifact you intend to run, record its filename, and test it against the PHP version supplied by your Ubuntu image.

No authoritative support table for current Ubuntu and PHP combinations is established by the project material. A successful package installation therefore does not prove that every Pligg function will work. Keep the first installation on staging, test registration, submission, voting, comments, uploads, administration and upgrades, and take a database snapshot before exposing the site.
1. Provision and secure the Ubuntu VPS
Create an administrator and update the system
Log in over SSH using the provider’s initial account, create a named administrator, and grant it administrative privileges. Then update the package index and installed packages before adding the web stack.

sudo apt upgradeReboot if the upgrade requests it, reconnect with the non-root account, and confirm the server’s hostname and time zone. Keep SSH authentication, firewall rules and backups under your control; the CMS installer should never be your only recovery mechanism.
Enable only the network services you need
Permit SSH from your administration network where practical, and permit HTTP and HTTPS for the eventual site. Do not expose the database port to the public internet when Apache and the database run on the same VPS. Apply your provider’s firewall as well as the host firewall if both are available.
2. Install Apache, MySQL-compatible database software and PHP
Install Apache, the database server, PHP, the Apache PHP module and the MySQL PHP extension. Ubuntu documents php with libapache2-mod-php, and identifies php-mysql as the connector Pligg needs. Add the command-line package when you want PHP diagnostics from SSH.

sudo apt install apache2 mysql-server php libapache2-mod-php php-mysql php-cli unzipThe exact database package can vary by Ubuntu release; use the supported MySQL-compatible server supplied for that image. Verify that Apache is running, then create a temporary PHP test page in the document root containing <?php phpinfo(); ?>. Open it only from a restricted location, confirm the PHP module is loaded, and remove the test page immediately. A public PHP information page discloses unnecessary server details.

If the installer fails or the application emits deprecation or fatal errors, stop and test another supported Ubuntu/PHP combination in staging rather than suppressing errors on a production site.
3. Create a dedicated database and account
Give Pligg its own database and database user. A dedicated account limits the damage from a compromised application and makes backup and migration boundaries clear. Use a long, unique password and retain the host, database name, username and password for the browser installer.

EXIT;The account needs full rights inside the Pligg database so the installer can create its tables, but it does not need privileges on unrelated databases or remote hosts. If you use a different database name or user, write those exact values down; the installer is case-sensitive about credentials and hostnames.
4. Download and stage the Pligg files
Use the project release artifact
Download the chosen release from the Kliqqi project source rather than an unknown mirror. The old VPS procedure uses 2.0.1, while the release page lists 2.0.2, so verify the intended version before extracting it. Keep the original archive until the site has been tested and backed up.

sudo cp -a 'EXTRACTED_DIRECTORY'/. /var/www/pligg/Replace the archive and directory names with the actual artifact you selected. Do not publish a guessed download URL or silently substitute a third-party package. If the release is supplied in another archive format, use the matching extraction tool and inspect the resulting directory before copying it into Apache’s document root.
Prepare the default files
The repository ships several files with a .default suffix. Rename the copies before opening the installer:

sudo mv logs.default logsFor the language file, use the exact language filename present in the release; the project’s instruction is to remove the .default suffix from the language you intend to activate. Do not rename every language file unless you have a reason to do so.
5. Configure Apache and file ownership
Point a virtual host at the application
Set the Apache document root to the directory containing Pligg’s index.php. A minimal virtual host can use /var/www/pligg as its document root and your DNS name as ServerName. Enable the site, test the Apache configuration, and reload Apache before launching the installer.

sudo systemctl reload apache2If you already host another site, use a separate virtual host and confirm that the request is not landing in the wrong document root. A 404 at /install/index.php is often a path or virtual-host error rather than a database problem.

Give the web process only the writes it needs
The project identifies these locations as writable or operationally important during setup: admin/backup/, avatar-upload directories, cache/, languages/, logs/, libs/dbconnect.php and settings.php. The installer may need temporary write access to them. Grant ownership or group write access to the Apache service account only where required; do not make the entire tree world-writable.
After copying the files, inspect ownership and permissions, test the installer, and then remove write access that is no longer necessary. In particular, configuration files should not remain writable by every local user. The repository’s documented post-install state sets libs/dbconnect.php to mode 644.

6. Run the browser installer
Open the installer
Visit https://your-hostname/install/index.php once HTTPS is configured, or use the temporary HTTP address during a protected staging setup. Choose a language, then follow the installer’s checks and stop at the first reported error. The installer is the authority for the table prefix and any release-specific options; do not guess those values from another version.
- Select the language whose file you prepared in the previous step.
- Enter the database host, database name, database user and password created for this installation. For a database on the same VPS, the host is commonly
localhost, but use the value your database configuration requires. - Choose a table prefix if the installer requests one. Keep it short, document it, and do not reuse a prefix from an unrelated application in the same database.
- Create the first administrator account with a unique password. Do not reuse the VPS, SSH or database password.
- Submit the form and read every result. If a file, directory or database check fails, fix that condition and rerun the check before continuing.
What to do when the installer reports an error
- Database connection failure: recheck the host, database name, username and password; confirm the account is allowed from the host shown in the error; and verify that the database service is running.
- Cannot write a file or directory: compare the failing path with the writable locations listed by the project, correct ownership for the Apache account, and avoid solving the problem with unrestricted
777permissions. - Blank page or PHP fatal error: inspect Apache and PHP logs, confirm the required PHP extensions are loaded, and test a different Ubuntu/PHP combination in staging. Do not hide the error and proceed blindly.
- Installer URL returns 404: check the virtual host’s document root, the extracted directory nesting and the exact case of
install/index.php.
7. Remove the installer and harden the finished site
Once the installer completes, delete the install directory. Leaving it accessible gives an attacker an unnecessary setup and upgrade surface. Set libs/dbconnect.php to mode 644 as the project documentation specifies, review settings.php, and reduce write permissions on configuration and application directories to the minimum needed for normal operation.

sudo chmod 644 /var/www/pligg/libs/dbconnect.phpOpen /index.php, submit a test story, vote, add a comment if enabled, upload an avatar, and log in through /admin. Check that the cache and log paths work without making the whole application writable. Configure the site name, language, moderation rules, email settings and modules only after the basic request, login and database paths are reliable.

Add HTTPS and operational protection
Put the public site behind HTTPS before collecting passwords or user submissions. Redirect plain HTTP after verifying the certificate, and ensure cookies and administrator sessions are protected by the application and web-server settings available on your chosen Ubuntu release. Schedule database and file backups, monitor disk usage, and test restoring a backup on a separate staging VPS; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Manual VPS or managed VPS?
The application files are the same, but the operational responsibility differs. Choose based on who will maintain the server rather than on a promised Pligg feature.

8. Upgrade Pligg without losing data
Do not replace files on a live site until you have a tested backup and a rollback plan. The repository’s upgrade procedure calls for preserving user uploads and configuration, uploading the new release, running the upgrade script, and removing the installer again.
- Put the site in a maintenance state if your deployment allows it, and record the currently installed release.
- Back up the MySQL database and the complete site directory. Verify that the database dump can be read and that the archive contains uploaded files.
- Preserve
avatars/,libs/dbconnect.php,favicon.icoandsettings.php. Also preserve any custom templates or modules you installed. - Extract the new release in a separate staging directory, compare its configuration and directory layout, then copy the application files into the document root without overwriting the preserved files.
- Open
/install/upgrade.phpand follow its checks. Fix reported permission or database errors before submitting the upgrade. - Delete
/installafter the upgrade and returnlibs/dbconnect.phpto mode 644. - Re-enable modules one at a time and test template compatibility, registration, submissions, voting, comments, uploads and administrator pages.
- If a migration fails, restore the database and files from the backup rather than attempting ad-hoc SQL changes on production.
Production-readiness checklist
- Ubuntu is patched, SSH uses a non-root administrator, and firewall rules expose only required services.
- Apache, the database service, PHP,
libapache2-mod-phpandphp-mysqlare installed and running. - The selected Pligg/Kliqqi release is recorded; 2.0.2 is the latest version displayed by the cited release page, but its current Ubuntu/PHP support is not documented there.
- A dedicated database and least-privilege application user have been created with a unique password.
- Default files have been renamed, the correct language file is active, and Apache serves the directory containing
index.php. - Only the project’s required cache, log, upload and setup paths are writable by the web process.
- The browser installer completed without warnings, and the
installdirectory has been removed. libs/dbconnect.phpis mode 644, configuration files are not globally writable, and HTTPS protects sign-in and submissions.- Database and file backups have been taken and a restore has been tested on staging.
- An upgrade procedure preserves
avatars/, configuration, custom modules and templates before running/install/upgrade.php.
Common reasons to stop before going live
Stop the deployment if the only way to pass the installer is to make the whole document root writable, if PHP errors are being hidden, if you cannot restore the database backup, or if the release behaves differently on your production PHP version than it did in staging. Pligg’s legacy lineage and the absence of a current official Ubuntu/PHP matrix make controlled testing more important than copying an old command sequence verbatim.
