What is an APU?
An APU combines a CPU and graphics processor on the same processor package. Unlike a conventional desktop CPU with a small display adapter, a gaming APU has an integrated GPU capable of rendering games without a separate graphics card.
That convenience comes with an important limitation: the integrated GPU does not have its own dedicated pool of fast VRAM. It shares the system’s memory with the CPU. Consequently, memory configuration matters considerably. Two matched memory modules provide dual-channel bandwidth; one memory stick can substantially restrict the graphics processor.
An APU is therefore best suited to affordable desktops, compact PCs, casual gaming, esports, older games and buyers who want to postpone purchasing a graphics card. It is not a universal replacement for a midrange or high-end GPU.

The answer depends on the processor, memory, resolution, graphics settings and game. “1080p gaming” can mean low settings, reduced textures, upscaling and a variable frame rate; it does not mean the same visual quality or performance as a modern discrete graphics card.
- Lightweight and esports games: Valorant, League of Legends, Dota 2, Minecraft, older competitive games and many indie titles are the natural targets. These games are generally the best match for an APU.
- Moderate games: Fortnite, Apex Legends and older AAA games can be playable with reduced settings and, depending on the title, a lower resolution or an upscaler.
- Demanding modern AAA games: Expect major compromises. Some may require 720p output, low presets, reduced textures, upscaling and modest frame-rate expectations even on the 8700G.
Independent testing of the 8700G found it more convincing at 720p and capable of limited 1080p gaming, rather than a substitute for a mainstream graphics card. See Tom’s Hardware’s review for the tested game and settings context.
Why Ryzen 8000G is much faster than Ryzen 5000G for graphics
Ryzen 5000G processors use Zen 3 CPU cores and older Vega integrated graphics. Ryzen 8000G processors use Zen 4 CPU cores and RDNA 3-class integrated graphics. The architectural change, not merely the model numbering, is the main reason the newer chips are substantially more capable for integrated gaming.
The 8700G has Radeon 780M graphics with 12 compute units. The 8600G has Radeon 760M with eight. The 8500G has Radeon 740M with only four. The 5000G chips’ Vega graphics are considerably older, although their AM4 platform can still be the right choice when the complete system is much cheaper.

- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included
Best overall: Ryzen 5 8600G
The Ryzen 5 8600G is the value center of AMD’s 2024 desktop APU range. It has six Zen 4 cores, 12 threads, a boost clock of up to 5.0GHz, Radeon 760M graphics with eight compute units, a 65W TDP and a $229 launch SEP. It also includes Ryzen AI functionality and uses the AM5 socket with DDR5 memory.
For a new PC that will not have a graphics card, the 8600G offers the most balanced combination of CPU capability, integrated graphics and purchase price. Its RDNA 3 graphics are a major step over the Vega graphics in the 5600G and 5700G, while the $100 saving versus the 8700G can be used toward memory, storage or a better case and power supply.
The catch is that the processor is only one part of the cost. An AM5 motherboard and DDR5 kit can make a complete 8600G system more expensive than an AM4 build based on the 5600G. Choose it when the budget supports the newer platform and you want materially better integrated gaming performance than AM4 can provide.
Fastest 2024 AMD APU: Ryzen 7 8700G
The Ryzen 7 8700G is AMD’s fastest 2024 desktop APU for gaming without a discrete graphics card. It combines eight Zen 4 cores and 16 threads with Radeon 780M graphics featuring 12 compute units. It has a 65W TDP, boosts to 5.1GHz and launched at $329.
Its main gaming advantage is the larger integrated GPU, not simply the two additional CPU cores. The extra CPU capacity is useful for multitasking and heavier workloads, but the 780M is the reason to pay more for an 8700G in an APU-first build.
Buy it when integrated-graphics performance is the top priority, when the price gap over the 8600G is acceptable, or when the system will also run demanding CPU workloads. It is not automatically the best value. Once the total system price approaches that of a conventional CPU paired with a discrete entry-level graphics card, the separate-GPU option may offer better gaming performance and upgrade flexibility.
The 8700G includes a Wraith Spire cooler, according to review documentation. The 8600G and 8500G include Wraith Stealth coolers.

Best cheap AM4 option: Ryzen 5 5600G
The Ryzen 5 5600G remains the sensible low-cost choice when the aim is to build or upgrade an inexpensive AM4 system. It has six cores, 12 threads, Zen 3 CPU architecture, Radeon Vega 7 graphics and a 65W TDP. It uses affordable DDR4 memory and is compatible with a large selection of budget and used AM4 motherboards.

Its strength is total platform cost. If you already own an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory, upgrading to a 5600G may require little more than the processor and possibly a BIOS update.
Check the motherboard manufacturer’s CPU support list before buying. Some boards need a BIOS update to recognize a Ryzen 5000G processor, and the exact procedure varies. A board with BIOS Flashback can make the update easier, but this feature is not universal.
Best AM4 eight-core upgrade: Ryzen 7 5700G
The Ryzen 7 5700G is an eight-core, 16-thread AM4 APU with Radeon Vega 8 graphics. It makes sense when you already own a compatible AM4 system, need more CPU capacity for multitasking or productivity, and find the chip at a substantial discount.
It is not a good new-build choice merely because it has eight cores. Its Vega graphics are older and slower than the 8600G’s Radeon 760M. If the motherboard, memory and processor must all be purchased at prices close to an AM5 system, the 8600G is generally the better gaming foundation.
Why the Ryzen 5 8500G is a cautious recommendation
The $179 Ryzen 5 8500G looks like a cheaper 8600G, but it is not simply the same design with fewer graphics units. It combines full Zen 4 cores with smaller Zen 4c cores and uses Radeon 740M graphics with only four compute units.
That makes it a reasonable low-cost AM5 processor for general use with light gaming, especially if a particularly cheap complete motherboard-and-memory bundle is available. It is a weak gaming value when the goal is modern games without a discrete GPU and the complete system costs close to an 8600G build.

- 5.6 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 76 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included
It is also a poor choice if a discrete graphics card will be installed soon. In that situation, a conventional Ryzen desktop CPU may provide a better CPU and expansion foundation.
What about the Ryzen 3 8300G?
The Ryzen 3 8300G was positioned as an OEM product rather than a normal retail DIY recommendation. It has four cores, eight threads and Radeon 740M graphics with four compute units. Buyers are more likely to encounter it inside a prebuilt system than as a processor for an independently assembled gaming PC.
AM4 versus AM5: compare the whole platform
The processor’s launch price can be misleading because an APU system also needs a motherboard and memory.
| Platform | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| AM4 / Ryzen 5000G | Usually cheaper DDR4, abundant budget and used motherboards, excellent upgrade value for existing owners | Older Zen 3 and Vega graphics, older platform, weaker integrated gaming performance |
| AM5 / Ryzen 8000G | Zen 4, much stronger RDNA 3 graphics, DDR5, newer motherboard ecosystem and a better forward-looking platform | Motherboard and DDR5 costs can erase processor savings; 8000G PCIe configuration is less attractive for a high-end future GPU |
For AM5, AMD lists chipsets including A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, X870, X870E, B840 and B850 for the 8600G’s broader platform support. Nevertheless, verify the exact board’s CPU support list and BIOS revision before buying. Broad chipset compatibility does not guarantee that every board ships with the required firmware.
The 8000G processors support PCIe 4.0 and offer fewer PCIe lanes than standard Ryzen 7000 desktop designs. That limitation matters little in an iGPU-only computer but matters more if the processor is intended as a temporary solution before a high-end discrete GPU.
Memory is critical for APU gaming
- Use two matched modules rather than one stick.
- Choose enough capacity for the operating system and the games you play.
- Use a compatible, reasonably fast DDR5 kit with AM5.
- Use dual-channel DDR4 with AM4.
- Check the motherboard’s memory support list when choosing faster kits.
Because the iGPU shares system memory, bandwidth and dual-channel operation affect performance. AMD used 32GB of two-stick DDR5-6400 in its own 8700G testing, but that is an AMD test configuration, not a universal requirement or guaranteed recommendation. Do not assume that reserving more RAM for the integrated GPU in the BIOS creates dedicated VRAM. It only allocates part of system memory and may leave less available to the CPU and operating system.

Upscaling, Radeon features and frame generation
Resolution scaling can make an APU more usable. Depending on the game and driver support, Radeon Super Resolution, HYPR-RX-related features and AMD Fluid Motion Frames may help improve perceived smoothness or allow a lower internal render resolution.
Best Value
- Play some of the most popular games at 1080p with the fastest processor graphics in the world, no graphics card required
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
- 4.6 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 20 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform. Maximum Operating Temperature (Tjmax)-95°C
These features do not create additional underlying rendering power. Frame generation can improve apparent fluidity, but it may add latency or produce visual artifacts, particularly when the base frame rate is low. Treat it as a useful option after lowering demanding settings, not as a way to turn an entry-level APU into a high-end gaming system.
Does Ryzen AI improve gaming?
The Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G include AMD Ryzen AI functionality. The NPU can be relevant to supported AI applications, video effects, productivity software and power-efficient inference, but it is not a game-rendering accelerator.
Do not buy either processor expecting Ryzen AI to increase game FPS. For gaming, the relevant differences are the CPU cores, integrated GPU, memory configuration and total system cost.
When a normal Ryzen CPU is the better choice
If you are installing a discrete graphics card immediately, an 8000G APU may be the wrong starting point. Standard Ryzen 7000 desktop CPUs generally offer a more desktop-oriented design, more cache and a more attractive PCIe configuration for a discrete-GPU system. Their integrated graphics are basic, but that does not matter if a separate GPU will do the rendering.
Likewise, do not buy an expensive 8700G and then add a graphics card straight away unless the temporary integrated-graphics period, compact system design or avoidance of a GPU purchase is genuinely valuable to you. The APU’s central advantage is usable graphics without a separate card.
APU buying checklist
- Set the gaming target. Decide whether you mainly play esports and indie games or demanding modern AAA titles.
- Choose the platform. Select AM4 for the lowest total cost or an existing compatible system; select AM5 for stronger graphics and a newer platform.
- Buy two memory modules. Avoid single-stick configurations for an iGPU gaming build.
- Check BIOS support. Confirm processor compatibility and required BIOS version on the motherboard manufacturer’s site.
- Budget for the complete system. Include motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, case, cooling and operating system, not just the processor.
- Plan cooling and airflow. The CPU and GPU share the same package power and thermal budget. A cramped case, weak cooler or poor airflow can reduce sustained performance.
- Decide whether a GPU upgrade is imminent. If so, compare the APU build with a conventional CPU and discrete graphics card before buying.
- Match the power supply to the future system. A quality 450–550W unit is generally ample for an APU-only PC, but a planned discrete GPU may require more capacity.
Recommendations by buyer
| Buyer | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| New builder wanting the best balance | Ryzen 5 8600G | Modern Zen 4 CPU and strong RDNA 3 graphics without the 8700G’s extra cost |
| Maximum integrated graphics performance | Ryzen 7 8700G | Radeon 780M with 12 compute units and eight CPU cores |
| Cheapest practical system | Ryzen 5 5600G | AM4 and DDR4 can substantially reduce complete build cost |
| Existing AM4 owner needing more CPU power | Ryzen 7 5700G | Eight cores and 16 threads without replacing the platform |
| Lowest-cost AM5 general-purpose PC | Ryzen 5 8500G | Acceptable only when the complete AM5 bundle is significantly cheaper |
| Buyer adding a GPU soon | Conventional Ryzen CPU | Better fit for a discrete-GPU system and future PCIe expansion |
Verdict
The Ryzen 5 8600G is the best AMD APU for most 2024 gaming builds without a discrete graphics card. The Ryzen 7 8700G is faster, but its premium is justified mainly when maximum integrated-graphics performance matters. The Ryzen 5 5600G remains the budget winner for AM4 owners and ultra-low-cost systems, while the Ryzen 7 5700G is primarily an existing-platform upgrade.
Choose by complete platform cost, not processor price alone. Two-channel memory, realistic graphics settings and a clear plan for future GPU upgrades matter as much as the APU model.
