Open GeForce Experience from Windows Search
- Press the Windows key or select Start.
- Type GeForce Experience.
- Select the application from the results.
- Sign in only if the feature you want requires an NVIDIA account.
This is the simplest method because it does not require a desktop shortcut or knowledge of the installation folder.
Open it from the Start menu
Open Start, choose All apps, and scroll to the NVIDIA entries. Select GeForce Experience if it appears. Windows may group the shortcut differently depending on its version and how NVIDIA software was installed.

If you use the program regularly, right-click its search result and choose Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar, if those options are available.
Open the NVIDIA overlay while playing a game
If you mean the capture and performance panel rather than the main desktop application, press:
Alt + Z
When the relevant NVIDIA software is running and the overlay is enabled, this opens the NVIDIA Overlay. From there you can access features such as screenshots, gameplay recording, filters, broadcasts, and performance statistics.
In the NVIDIA app, Alt + F9 generally starts or stops recording, subject to your configured shortcuts and software version. NVIDIA’s feature guide documents these overlay shortcuts.

GeForce Experience has been replaced by the NVIDIA app
GeForce Experience may still launch on computers where it is installed, but it is now the legacy route. NVIDIA says the NVIDIA app combines major GeForce Experience and RTX Experience features, including driver updates, game and program settings, recording tools, and the redesigned overlay.
NVIDIA is encouraging remaining GeForce Experience users to upgrade and has said that critical GeForce Experience web servers will be switched off in the future. NVIDIA has not established a definite shutdown date in the cited announcement, so an exact deadline should not be assumed.
After installing the NVIDIA app:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type NVIDIA app.
- Open the result.
- Use
Alt + Zto open its overlay.
What to do if GeForce Experience does not appear
- Search for NVIDIA app instead. It may already be installed.
- Check Start > All apps for NVIDIA entries.
- If neither application appears, download the NVIDIA app from NVIDIA’s official site. Avoid old installers from third-party download sites.
- Restart Windows after installation if the shortcut or overlay does not appear.
- Open the app and try
Alt + Zagain.
If Windows Search is not showing a program that you know is installed, searching the Start menu for NVIDIA and checking the application’s shortcut locations may help. Installing the current NVIDIA app is usually more practical than trying to recover an old GeForce Experience installer.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What to do if Alt + Z does nothing
- Open GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA app from Windows first.
- Check that the in-game overlay is enabled.
- For legacy GeForce Experience, open Settings > General and look for the Share overlay setting. Older NVIDIA documentation uses “Share,” while the current app generally calls it the NVIDIA Overlay.
- Check the keyboard-shortcut settings for a conflict with another application. If necessary, assign a different shortcut.
- Update the NVIDIA app and your NVIDIA graphics driver.
- Restart Windows and test the shortcut again.
Some software or protected content can limit capture features, and another program may already be using the same key combination. An overlay failure does not necessarily mean the main NVIDIA application is missing.

Opening the app is different from opening the overlay
| What you want to do | What to open or press |
|---|---|
| Update drivers, optimize games, or manage recording features | NVIDIA app, or legacy GeForce Experience |
| Open the in-game capture and performance panel | Alt + Z |
| Start or stop recording in the NVIDIA app | Alt + F9, if configured and supported |
| Change display and 3D-driver settings | NVIDIA Control Panel and/or the NVIDIA app |
| Stream games from NVIDIA’s cloud servers | GeForce NOW |
| Use microphone, camera, and broadcast tools | NVIDIA Broadcast |
GeForce NOW is not another name for GeForce Experience: it is NVIDIA’s cloud-gaming service. Likewise, NVIDIA Control Panel, NVIDIA Broadcast, the NVIDIA app, and GeForce Experience are separate products, even though some features overlap.
Do you need an NVIDIA account?
Opening the application generally is not the same as requiring an account. Some connected services, rewards, or account-linked features may require sign-in, while NVIDIA describes login as optional for some NVIDIA app functionality. The exact requirement depends on the feature you select.

If NVIDIA software is running in the background, select the hidden-icons arrow near the Windows clock and look for an NVIDIA icon. You can open or right-click it if present. The icon may be hidden or disabled, so its absence does not prove that the application is uninstalled.

Press Alt + Z to open the NVIDIA in-game overlay. The shortcut works only when the relevant NVIDIA software is installed, running, and has its overlay enabled.
Is GeForce Experience still available?
Some existing installations may still open, but NVIDIA has replaced it with the NVIDIA app and recommends upgrading. NVIDIA has announced that critical supporting web servers will be switched off in the future without specifying a firm date in the cited announcement.
Can I still use ShadowPlay?
Yes, NVIDIA’s recording features are now accessed through the NVIDIA app’s overlay. Open the overlay with Alt + Z, or use Alt + F9 for recording when that shortcut is enabled.
