The 128-player figure is the capacity described in that dated feature, not a guarantee of current occupancy. The same article covered a group of seven individual servers; do not assume every EXD listing or every server in that group has identical live population, map, or queue conditions.

How to choose the right server before you connect
1. Match the scenario to your group
A period setting such as Vietnam ’67 may be the deciding factor for one squad, while another group cares only about modern weapons. Confirm that the listing’s current map and mode match your plan; communities can rotate away from the scenario suggested by their name.
2. Check first-person and third-person rules
Camera restrictions affect situational awareness and the feel of infantry combat. Exodus explicitly disables third-person. Other listings require you to inspect the rules or community description, so do that before joining if a first-person-only match is important to you.

A high population can mean active objectives and easier squad formation, but a queue costs time. A low population may be ideal for learning controls or may leave the scenario under-filled. Consider how long you can play and whether your group can wait.
4. Compare mod size with your connection and storage
Large realism packs add content but increase download time and the chance that an update invalidates your local files. A no-mod or Vanilla+ option is more suitable when you want to play immediately or are on a limited connection.
5. Confirm region and platform
Select the closest practical region, then check the measured ping in the browser. Confirm PC, PlayStation, or Xbox availability and cross-play status rather than assuming that every community supports every platform.
6. Look for current administration
An active Discord or clearly maintained rules page can indicate where to report problems and how to understand the server’s expectations. It does not prove quality, but an abandoned link or outdated ruleset is a warning that the listing may not be maintained.

Joining a modded server step by step
- Open the in-game server browser. Use the search field for the exact community name or identifier. For Exodus, search
EXD. - Apply practical filters. Narrow by region, platform, population, or mode when those filters are available.
- Inspect the live listing. Note the current map, player count, queue, ping, camera rules, and required add-ons.
- Start the connection. Reforger can obtain required add-ons through the server-join process. Bohemia’s documentation identifies Workshop as the official repository for add-ons and explains that joining a server requiring them can obtain the necessary mods.
- Allow the download to finish. Keep the game open while the package installs, and avoid starting another large download if your connection is congested.
- Accept updated versions when prompted. A server may have changed its mod pack since your last visit. Version mismatches commonly prevent a connection.
- Read the first screen of rules. Confirm camera restrictions, communication expectations, team-killing policy, and any role or objective instructions before spawning.
- Join a squad and use the community’s communication method. If the server expects organized teamwork, a short introduction and a request for a role is more effective than silently taking a specialist slot.
How the Workshop and mod updates affect reliability
Arma Reforger’s Workshop is the official repository for add-ons. You do not normally need to hunt down separate download sites for a server’s required content: joining a server that requires an add-on can obtain it through the game’s supported flow.
That convenience does not make modded servers maintenance-free. Required downloads, versions, and total size can change after server or game updates. A server you joined last week may request a new version today, and a large pack can take longer than the match itself to install on a slow connection.
When a download appears stuck
- Check whether the server is still online and whether its queue or player count has changed.
- Leave enough free storage for the updated package; a replacement may need temporary space before the old version is removed.
- Restart the game if the Workshop transfer or installation remains at the same percentage for an extended period.
- Reopen the listing and confirm that the required mod version has not changed again.
When you receive a version or missing-mod error
- Exit the server and review the listing’s current required add-ons.
- Let the game update or reinstall the named package.
- Retry from the exact listing rather than using an old favorite or history entry.
- If the error persists, check the community’s current status channel; the server may be updating its pack or temporarily offline.
Population, queues, and ping: reading live fields correctly
Population and queue data are useful only when paired with a timestamp. The ArmaHQ count of 5,070 servers was crawled on October 15, 2026; the number can change as servers start, stop, or are removed. Apply the same caution to individual listings: a full server at one hour may be empty after a map rotation.

- Choose the full server when you need active objectives, many squads, or a community’s peak-time experience and can accept a queue.
- Choose the lower-population server when you are learning, testing controls, or want to avoid waiting; verify that the mode remains enjoyable with fewer human players.
- Wait for another time when a setting-specific server is empty but its community is known to run scheduled sessions.
Ping is a practical filter, not a server-quality award. A nearby region with a moderate population will usually be a better choice than a distant full server if delayed input makes infantry combat frustrating. Check the live value in the browser rather than relying on the community’s advertised location.
Cross-play, moderation, and beginner readiness
Cross-play can expand the available population, but support is a property of the specific server and current game configuration. Confirm the platform icons or listing details before downloading. If your group spans PC and console, have every player search the same community name and verify that the server appears for each account.
Beginner friendliness is also contextual. A server with no required mods, clear rules, and an active population is easier to enter than a realism community that assumes familiarity with a large mod pack. That does not make the latter worse; it simply gives it a different audience. Ask whether new players may join general infantry roles, whether voice communication is expected, and where current rules are posted.

Moderation cannot be inferred from a player count. Look for current administrator contact details, a reporting process, and rules that explain penalties. If those details are absent, join cautiously and avoid committing to a long download until you know how disputes are handled.

Common failure modes and fixes
The server is full or the queue does not move
Recheck the listing after several minutes. If the queue remains static, choose another server in the same region or a lower-population community. Do not assume that a queue indicates a permanent player base.
The server loads a different map than expected
Map rotation can change between sessions. Leave before downloading an unnecessary pack if the current scenario does not suit your group, then search again using the mode or setting filter.
The mod download is too large
Choose a Vanilla+ or no-required-mod option such as the described EXD setup, or select a smaller community pack. Large custom content is valuable only if the resulting scenario justifies the installation time for your connection and storage.
Your ping is unexpectedly high
Close other bandwidth-heavy applications, then compare nearby regional listings. If every local server is high-latency, postpone the session rather than forcing a distant connection that may produce poor hit registration and voice timing.

Read the community description and any welcome message before spawning. Ask in chat which channel or Discord contains current rules. If the server expects organized roles or radio discipline, follow a squad leader until you learn the routine.
You cannot find the community
Search the exact spelling, remove restrictive filters, and check whether the server is currently online. A directory entry may disappear when the host restarts. For EXD, use the identifier EXD; for other communities, copy the visible listing name rather than an old bookmark.

- Want modern realism and do not mind a large install? Inspect WCS-style NATO/RUS listings and choose one with a tolerable queue and nearby region.
- Want Vietnam specifically? Search ArmaConflict Vietnam ’67, then verify its live population, queue, map, and region.

- Want to start immediately with community moderation? Search for EXD and confirm the live listing; its described configuration requires no mod download.

Record the time you checked a listing if you are coordinating friends. A note such as “checked October 16, 2026, 20:00 UTC” is more useful than saying that a server is always busy.
